AI coding assistants can speed up some bounded tasks, but they are not reliably faster or cheaper across software development. Results depend on the task, the developer, familiarity with the codebase, the tools used, and how success is measured. Treat generated code as a proposal within a developer-led process—not as a replacement for requirements, review, testing, security, integration, or maintenance.
What counts as AI-assisted development?
Traditional development here means developers write code within established engineering practices. AI-assisted development adds code-generation or agentic tools to that workflow while leaving decisions and accountability with people. The distinction is not “human work” versus “automatic software”: both approaches still need clear requirements, a working integration process, and someone responsible for the result.

An assistant may suggest a function, draft a test, explain unfamiliar code, or—in an agentic workflow—make repository changes and invoke tools. The amount of human oversight and the permissions granted to a tool can vary substantially. Comparisons are most useful when they specify the task, tool, repository, and review process rather than treating “AI” as one consistent method.
Are AI coding assistants faster?
The available controlled studies point in different directions. They are evidence about particular tasks and participants, not a direct contest between workflows: their settings, tools, and evaluation methods differ.

| Study | Setting | Reported result | What it does—and does not—show |
|---|---|---|---|
| GitHub, 2022 | Randomized study of 95 professional developers. The task was writing a JavaScript HTTP server, scored automatically. | The Copilot group averaged 1 hour 11 minutes, compared with 2 hours 41 minutes for the control group; GitHub reported the Copilot group completed the task 55% faster on average. Task completion rates were 78% and 70%, respectively. | A substantial advantage on this constrained task. It does not establish the same gain for other work, repositories, or teams. GitHub published the study. |
| METR, 2025 | Randomized trial with 16 experienced open-source developers completing 246 tasks in mature repositories. Participants had an average of five years’ experience with the repositories. The early-2025 tools used were primarily Cursor Pro and Claude 3.5/3.7 Sonnet. | Developers took 19% longer when AI tools were allowed. | A slowdown in this experienced-developer, familiar-codebase setting. It does not mean assistants slow every developer or task. |
The contrast is not a basis for averaging the percentages or forecasting a team-wide gain. A short, well-specified task with an automated score differs from changes to a mature repository where a developer already understands the system. Tool generation and the time needed to interpret, correct, and integrate suggestions also matter.
Is AI coding cheaper than hiring developers?
These studies measure task performance, not the cost of delivering and maintaining software. Faster task completion, even when demonstrated, does not by itself establish lower total cost. The available sources do not provide a robust cross-industry figure comparing the total cost of AI-assisted and traditional development, or a universally comparable current vendor price.

Compare end-to-end delivery rather than typing time alone. A practical measure is the time and expense required to produce accepted, maintainable work, including review and rework. Keep raw coding time as a separate measure so it does not obscure the rest of the workflow.

Does AI-generated code improve quality?
In a randomized study of a constrained API-endpoint task, GitHub reported that developers were 5% more likely to approve Copilot-authored code. GitHub’s 2024 result, updated in 2025, is a vendor-published finding about that task; it is not independent evidence that AI-generated code is generally better or safer in production systems.
For a team, quality should be judged on whether the change is correct, readable, maintainable, and compatible with the system—not simply whether it compiles or whether a reviewer approves a single task. Track accepted work and subsequent rework alongside completion time. A suggestion that appears quickly but needs extensive correction may not improve delivery.

Is AI-generated code safe?
There is no general defect rate for AI-assisted software established by the evidence cited here. Secure development practices still apply. NIST SP 800-218A adds generative-AI-specific practices and recommendations to the Secure Software Development Framework (SSDF), Version 1.1. NIST describes the profile as guidance for producers and acquirers of AI models and systems; it is process guidance, not a guarantee that a particular generated change is secure.

How should a team compare the workflows?
A small, controlled pilot is more informative than assuming a productivity gain from a vendor claim or a study of another setting. Compare the same kinds of tasks under both workflows and record what happens after the code is written.
- Choose comparable tasks. Include the kinds of work the team actually does, such as bounded changes and work in less familiar or mature areas. Define acceptance criteria before starting.
- Record context. Note the task type and complexity, developer experience, familiarity with the repository, tool and version, and relevant settings. Current product capabilities and prices change, so verify those details for the pilot rather than assuming study-era tools represent today’s options.
- Measure the whole cycle. Track elapsed time through implementation, correction, review, tests, security checks, and integration. Record tool and infrastructure charges as well as staff time.
- Score the accepted result. Record correctness, readability, maintainability, whether it passes required checks, and later rework or defects. Do not use generated lines or time to first draft as substitutes for accepted work.
- Compare like with like. Keep AI-enabled and developer-led results separate, then examine results by task and familiarity. Report the sample and limitations; do not combine unlike tasks into a single productivity claim.
This measurement approach follows from the differences between the published study settings and the need to include secure-development work. It is a practical evaluation method, not a result already validated by those studies.
When is each workflow a better fit?
Neither approach is automatically preferable for every change. Decide at the task level, and make the level of oversight explicit.

- Consider a bounded assistant pilot when the task has clear acceptance criteria and a developer can readily verify the result. Measure whether the assistance reduces end-to-end effort after review and correction.
- Favor developer-led implementation or tighter controls when the change is difficult to specify, depends on deep repository knowledge, or has security, data-handling, or operational consequences that demand careful review. An assistant can still be used for limited support if policy permits, but its output should not bypass normal controls.
- For agentic access, set boundaries first. Decide what files and tools it may access, which actions require approval, and how changes will be inspected before merging. More autonomy makes permissions and action review part of the workflow design.
- Reassess as tools and work change. A result for one model generation, task, or repository is not a standing productivity guarantee for a different setup.
