At-home IPL can be used safely only when you follow the instructions for your exact device and confirm that your skin tone, hair color, and intended treatment area are compatible. Before flashing, check the model’s manual and compatibility chart, follow its skin-test directions, and keep treatment away from eyes and any areas the manual excludes. A built-in skin or contact sensor does not replace those checks.
Check that your device and treatment area are suitable
IPL suitability is not universal. It varies by model, skin tone, hair color, and body area, so use the compatibility chart and contraindication guidance for the device you own rather than another brand’s rules.

- Skin tone and hair color: Philips says the Lumea models covered by its guidance are suitable for fair to medium-brown skin, not dark-brown to dark skin; it directs users to check skin and hair compatibility. Braun describes its devices as most effective for light-to-medium skin tones and natural hair from blonde to dark brown or black, with lower effectiveness on very blonde, red, gray, or white hair. These are manufacturer statements for their products, not universal IPL thresholds. See Philips’ darker-skin guidance and the Braun help center.
- Body area: Check whether your exact model permits treatment on the area you have in mind, including facial or intimate areas. Philips says the specified Lumea models should be used only below the cheekbones. Braun’s guidance lists its own restrictions, including limits for men’s face, neck, and genital area. Do not transfer one model’s allowed-area list to another.
- Health and medicines: If you have a medical concern or take medicine that may affect light sensitivity, the manufacturer pages cited here do not establish an individualized clearance process. Ask the device maker and an appropriate clinician before treatment rather than guessing.
Before a session: read the manual and do its skin test
Find the manual for the exact brand and model, then check its compatibility chart, contraindications, permitted treatment areas, preparation steps, intensity guidance, and schedule. Philips specifically directs Lumea users to follow its manual, including skin tests when instructed and the recommended treatment schedule. Its statement that Lumea provides a safe, controlled way to achieve long-term hair reduction is conditional on that manual-based use; it is a Philips claim, not an independent safety finding. - Confirm that the intended body area is allowed and that no contraindication in the manual applies.
- Perform the skin test using the method and timing specified in the manual. Do not substitute another model’s test procedure.
- Use the treatment schedule and preparation instructions provided for that device. Do not increase treatment frequency to try to accelerate results.
During treatment: protect your eyes and follow device directions
Never flash near or on the eyes unless the exact model’s manual explicitly permits the relevant area; the manufacturer guidance covered here advises against it. Philips says not to use Lumea close to or on the eye, eyelid, or eyebrow, and specifies use only below the cheekbones. Eye-protection and eyewear requirements differ by product. Braun’s help center gives guidance for its own devices; that guidance does not establish whether another brand requires protective eyewear. Follow the directions for your model, along with its prescribed intensity and device positioning. Stop if the device signals incompatibility or if use causes an unexpected reaction, then consult the manual or manufacturer support for next steps.
After treatment: use your model’s aftercare and schedule
Follow the device’s aftercare and timing instructions before treating again. For example, Braun advises users to avoid artificial light sources and irritating activities or products for 24 hours after treatment, and recommends SPF 15 sunscreen if treated skin may be exposed to sunlight. Those are Braun-specific instructions, not a universal aftercare interval for all IPL devices; check the Braun help center and your own manual.

If you are choosing between devices, compare the instructions for the exact models rather than relying on a general claim that one is “safest.” Check these points side by side:

For example, Braun’s US product page identifies the Skin i·expert Smart IPL PL7387 and describes its attachments and skin-tone sensing. That identifies a product, not a recommendation for every user. Check the current Braun Skin i·expert PL7387 product page and its manual against your own compatibility needs. A sensor can assist use, but it does not replace reading the manual or checking that your skin, hair, and treatment area are suitable.
