AI Chatbots and Children: Frequently Asked Questions for Parents

Chatbots can support learning and creativity, but children need guidance on unreliable answers, privacy, age terms and human support.

AI chatbots can help children brainstorm, explore ideas and understand material, but they can also give confident, misleading answers and encourage children to share personal information. A chatbot is software—not a person, expert, confidential adviser or crisis service. Parents can make its use safer by setting age-appropriate boundaries, checking privacy settings, verifying important answers and keeping trusted people involved.

Are AI chatbots safe for children?

There is no universal yes-or-no answer. The risks and benefits depend on the child, the task and the particular service. Chatbots may support learning and creativity, but can also produce false or biased information, collect sensitive data, or create relationship-like interactions. UNICEF’s child-rights framework emphasizes children’s best interests, safety, privacy, transparency and accountability; it is guidance for evaluating AI, not a safety certification for any product: UNICEF policy guidance on AI for children.

Use context matters. Brainstorming a story is different from asking for health advice or treating a chatbot as a friend. Consider whether the service has safeguards appropriate to your child, whether answers can be checked, what information the service collects, and whether its use supports or displaces human help.

How common is chatbot use among teens?

In an Ipsos survey for Common Sense Media, conducted March 15–April 20, 2024, 70% of U.S. teens ages 13–18 reported using at least one generative AI tool. Among parents whose teen reported using one, 37% thought their child had used generative AI. The survey included 1,045 young people ages 13–18 and their parents; these figures describe that U.S. survey, not all children or current use worldwide. Common Sense Media’s survey findings.

What can children use chatbots for?

Possible uses include brainstorming, getting an explanation of unfamiliar material, summarizing information, or exploring fictional scenarios. Treat the response as a starting point, not a finished authority. For schoolwork, follow the teacher’s instructions and school policy; a chatbot’s contribution may not be permitted or appropriate for every assignment.

Can children trust chatbot answers?

Not automatically. Large language model chatbots can produce fluent answers that are wrong, incomplete or biased. UNICEF Innocenti specialist Steven Vosloo described the problem as systems generating “false or misleading information with apparent confidence” in an interview published July 9, 2025: UNICEF Innocenti interview with Steven Vosloo.

For health, safety, money, legal matters or another consequential decision, involve a trusted adult and verify the claim with authoritative sources. Do not treat confident wording as evidence.

What should parents explain about privacy?

Tell children that a chatbot is software, not a confidential confidant. What happens to a conversation depends on the service’s current policies and settings, so review them together rather than promising that chats are—or are not—stored or used for training. UNICEF warns that children’s data can raise concerns including commercial exploitation, profiling and surveillance: UNICEF Innocenti’s report on changing AI-child interaction.

As a practical boundary, ask children not to enter:

  • Full names, home addresses, phone numbers, passwords or precise location details.
  • School information that identifies them or reveals where they are.
  • Private images or sensitive health, family or relationship details.

Check the specific product’s privacy terms and controls; data handling varies by service.

What if a chatbot feels like a friend?

Listen without shaming the child, and ask what they value about the interaction. Children may turn to chatbots for advice, support or companionship, but a conversational tone does not make the system a human relationship or a dependable source of care. Keep friendships, family connection and offline activities in the child’s life.

Pay attention if use starts replacing friends, sleep or real-world engagement. The American Psychological Association advises parents to notice these patterns and support healthy boundaries: APA guidance on chatbots and teens. Evidence about long-term effects on children’s development and well-being is still developing; UNICEF has called for more research rather than presenting a settled causal conclusion.

Can a chatbot provide therapy or crisis support?

Do not rely on a general-purpose chatbot as a therapist or crisis service. The APA says these tools lack the evidence and safeguards needed to ensure users’ safety and emphasizes the role of trained, licensed providers. If a child may be in immediate danger or talks about self-harm, stay with them and contact local emergency or crisis support and a qualified clinician.

How can parents set boundaries?

Make the rules together where possible, and tailor them to the child, task and service. The APA recommends co-created boundaries, attention to real-world connection and help-seeking when needed. A useful starting checklist is:

  • Ask what the child wants to use the chatbot for, and agree on suitable uses and times.
  • Discuss how to check answers, especially when a claim could affect a decision.
  • Review privacy terms and settings together before use.
  • Make clear that the child can show you a worrying answer or interaction without getting in trouble for raising it.
  • Keep trusted adults and qualified professionals in the loop for serious concerns.

What age is appropriate?

There is no single age rule that applies to every chatbot or country. Product minimum ages, consent terms and legal requirements vary by service and jurisdiction. Check the named product’s current terms and the rules that apply where you live before a child signs up. UNICEF identifies age limits and age assurance as policy issues, but its reviewed guidance does not provide a complete, current country-by-country table.

How should parents decide whether a specific chatbot is suitable?

Consider the use and the service together, rather than relying on a blanket label such as “safe.” Check whether the product’s age terms fit your child; what data it collects and what privacy controls are available; whether the child can verify important answers; and whether the interaction is educational, creative, advice-seeking or companion-like. Policies and settings change, so confirm them directly with the service.

Common Sense Media rated generative AI chatbots as presenting “moderate risk” in its 2024 evaluation. That is the organization’s assessment at that time, not a universal rating of every chatbot or a guarantee about a particular child’s experience: Common Sense Media AI ratings.
