Your AI automation is still running on your laptop because that is where its workflow engine or job runner is deployed. The laptop is part of the system: if it shuts down, loses power or network access, or the runner stops, the workflow may not be available to execute. To run it independently of your computer, move execution to managed hosting or to a host you manage and keep available.
Why does an automation depend on your laptop?
An automation does not run in the abstract: a workflow engine or job runner executes it on a particular machine. If that process runs on your laptop, the machine must be available when the workflow needs to run. GitHub describes a self-hosted runner as a system you deploy and manage to execute jobs; its runner application must be running on its host to accept them. GitHub’s self-hosted runner documentation explains this operating model.

That is why closing the lid, shutting down the laptop, or losing its network connection can interrupt availability. Whether an in-progress run stops immediately or a missed trigger is retried depends on the particular automation platform and how the workflow is configured; hosting it elsewhere does not automatically guarantee that every event will be recovered.
Will the automation run if you close your laptop?
Usually not if the workflow engine or runner is on that laptop and closing it puts the machine to sleep or stops the relevant process. The key question is not whether you can see the automation in a browser or app, but where its execution process runs. A laptop can remain the host if it stays powered, connected, and configured to keep the runner active, but then the workflow still depends on that laptop.

What are the alternatives?
There are two broad operating models: let a provider operate the workflow hosting, or deploy the software on infrastructure you or your operator maintain. Self-hosting may mean a virtual server, on-premises equipment, a physical computer, or cloud infrastructure. A mini PC is one possible physical host, not a requirement.
| Option | Who operates the host? | Control and responsibility |
|---|---|---|
| Managed workflow hosting | The provider | Less infrastructure work for you. Check the provider’s current feature, plan, and service terms for your needs. |
| Self-hosted VPS or cloud server | You or your operator | More control over infrastructure and configuration, with responsibility for updates and ongoing operations. |
| Dedicated physical host | You or your operator | Local hardware control, but continued operation still depends on power, network access, maintenance, and configuration. |
For n8n specifically, its deployment documentation distinguishes n8n Cloud, which n8n manages, from self-hosting, where the operator controls infrastructure, configuration, and security. Its documented self-hosting routes include DigitalOcean, Heroku, Hetzner Cloud, Google Cloud Run, AWS, Azure, and Google Kubernetes Engine; this list is not a ranking of price or reliability. Which setup should you choose?
There is no universal best choice. Match the operating model to the workflow and to the work you are willing to take on:

Confirm that the current plan supports the features, integrations, data handling, and workload you need.
- Choose a self-managed server if you need infrastructure control and are prepared to configure, secure, update, and monitor it. A cloud server can run separately from your personal computer, but it still needs ongoing operation.
- Choose a physical host if keeping the hardware local is useful for your setup and you can keep it powered, connected, and maintained. Physical hosting alone does not guarantee reliability.
Before deciding, consider whether the workflow needs access to local devices or files, how it handles sensitive information, how much maintenance you can take on, and the provider’s current terms. The available documentation does not establish a general cost, uptime, or performance winner among these approaches.

What should you consider for AI workflows and credentials?
Moving an AI workflow off a laptop changes where it runs; it does not, by itself, make it secure. A self-hosted workflow may handle API keys, stored credentials, databases, and code supplied through workflow steps, so protect access to both the host and the automation platform.
For n8n self-hosting, the official task-runner documentation says, “Always use task runners in production”. It describes task runners as an isolation layer for user-provided code and recommends external mode and hardening for production instances that hold sensitive data. n8n warns that without the runner isolation layer, workflow editors could potentially read databases, encryption keys, stored credentials, and environment variables. Follow the applicable setup guidance in n8n’s task-runner documentation.

How do you move a workflow off your computer?
- Find the execution host. Identify which machine runs the workflow engine or runner, not just where you edit or view the workflow.
- Choose the destination. Select managed hosting or infrastructure you will manage, based on your workload, local-access needs, data handling, and maintenance capacity.
- Move definitions and credentials carefully. Transfer the workflow configuration and required secrets using the platform’s supported methods. Avoid placing credentials in public files or exposing them during migration.
- Configure triggers and access. Set up the destination’s network access, integrations, schedules, webhooks, and permissions so it can receive the events and reach the services the workflow needs.
- Test and monitor at the destination. Run a controlled test, confirm that triggers and outputs work, and check the destination’s logs or monitoring before relying on it. Keep the laptop available until you have verified the new execution path.
