AI Application Security: What Changes and What Still Matters

AI application security extends secure software development with safeguards for models, data, pipelines, and AI-specific threats. Here’s how to apply the NIST baseline and threat-model key LLM risks.

Securing an AI application starts with the same secure-development foundation as other software, then adds controls for models, training data, pipelines, and AI-specific behavior. NIST’s AI-focused profile supplements its Secure Software Development Framework (SSDF); it does not replace it. Use the baseline across the software lifecycle, then threat-model risks such as prompt injection, sensitive information disclosure, supply-chain exposure, and data or model poisoning for the particular system you are building or acquiring.

How does AI application security build on secure software development?

AI security is not a separate substitute for application security. Teams still need a secure development process for code, dependencies, access, testing, and release. AI adds assets and failure modes to that process: models, model-related APIs and configuration, training datasets, and the pipelines and environments used to create or operate them.

NIST’s SP 800-218A augments SSDF version 1.1 with practices, tasks, recommendations, considerations, and references specific to AI model development. It is intended to be used with the SSDF baseline, not instead of it. The profile is relevant to AI model producers, AI system producers, and organizations acquiring AI systems. NIST’s secure product development guidance also provides general context for embedding security in product development.

The distinction matters in practice: conventional secure-development controls remain necessary, but a control plan that inventories only source code and conventional dependencies can miss AI-specific assets and activities.

Which AI-specific risks should teams threat-model?

The OWASP GenAI Security Project’s 2025 LLM Top 10 includes the categories below. Treat them as prompts for system-specific threat modeling, not as a claim that every risk is equally likely or exploitable in every deployment. The questions in the table are an applied way to examine the categories; they are not a separate taxonomy published by OWASP or NIST.

Risk category Questions to investigate
Prompt injection, including direct and indirect forms Can user input or content the system retrieves or processes influence instructions or actions in an unintended way? What access or actions could be affected?
Sensitive information disclosure What sensitive information could the application, model, or connected resources expose, and through which user-facing or system-facing paths?
Supply-chain risk Which components, services, models, data, or development dependencies enter the system, and how could a compromised or unsuitable element affect it?
Data and model poisoning Who can influence data or model inputs during development or operation, and what changes would warrant investigation?

These categories point to different assets and stages of the lifecycle. Map each relevant risk to the attacker’s possible influence, the asset at risk, the potential impact, and whether the response should prevent, detect, or evaluate the behavior. The correct control depends on the system’s architecture and use; the category name alone does not establish likelihood or impact.

OWASP’s 2025 LLM Top 10 is a practical source for these application risk categories. Use it alongside, rather than in place of, the organization’s broader secure-development process.

What does an AI-aware development lifecycle look like?

A workable program carries AI assets through the same identify, protect, monitor, and assess cycle used for software security, with the model lifecycle explicitly included.

1. Identify models, data, dependencies, and environments

Maintain an inventory of the components that make the AI feature work: models, model-related APIs, weights, configuration parameters, training datasets, dependencies, pipelines, and the environments hosting them. Include the people and services that can change or access those assets. This gives teams a concrete scope for threat modeling and change review.

2. Protect assets and limit access

Apply least privilege to code and model-related elements, including pipelines and reward models. Access decisions should cover the assets and processes involved in model development, not just the application repository. A team should be able to identify who or what can read, modify, or deploy each sensitive element.

3. Monitor development environments and changes

NIST SP 800-218A recommends continuous monitoring of development-environment components that host models and related resources. Configure alerts for activity that passes a defined risk threshold or otherwise warrants investigation. Monitoring is useful only when the team can connect an alert to an asset, determine whether the activity was expected, and respond to changes that matter.

4. Assess application behavior against the threat model

Evaluate the application against the risks that apply to its design and use. For example, examine how direct and indirect prompt inputs are handled, what sensitive information could be exposed, which supply-chain elements are trusted, and how changes to data or models are detected. Revisit the assessment when assets, integrations, permissions, or system behavior change. These practices reduce blind spots; they do not by themselves eliminate AI risk.

Which NIST framework version should teams use?

NIST’s publication listing identifies SP 800-218 version 1.1 as final, published February 3, 2022, and SP 800-218A as final, published July 26, 2024. In the listing entry dated December 17, 2025, SP 800-218 Rev. 1, version 1.2 is marked as a draft, not a final publication. Do not treat that draft as the final SSDF version. Because publication status can change, check the NIST SSDF publications listing when selecting a version for a policy or procurement requirement.

For the AI-specific profile, use SP 800-218A as a supplement to SSDF 1.1. For a program or contract that names a framework version, identify the exact publication and status rather than referring vaguely to “the latest SSDF.”

How should organizations building or acquiring AI systems apply this?

Model producers, AI system producers, and acquirers have different responsibilities, but all benefit from making assets, access, and risk assumptions explicit.

  • Model producers: account for model development assets and environments, including training data, model weights, configuration, and development pipelines.
  • AI system producers: assess how models, APIs, application code, integrations, and user-facing behavior interact, then scope testing and monitoring to those connections.
  • Acquirers: ask which models and related components are in scope, how access and development changes are controlled and monitored, and how the supplier assesses relevant application risks. Align expectations to the system being acquired rather than assuming a framework label guarantees a particular outcome.

Across all three roles, begin with an inventory and a threat model, then select preventive, detective, and evaluative controls that match the assets and possible attacker influence. Frameworks organize the work; they do not certify that a specific deployment is safe.
