To find your own savings, measure where your spend goes, change one cost driver at a time, and check that quality and latency remain acceptable.
How to find where your AI API spend is going
Start with usage and cost data broken down by model and token category. A single monthly total can hide whether most of your bill comes from input tokens, generated output, cache writes, or a particular model. These categories can have different rates, so estimate costs using the current OpenAI API pricing table for the models and processing modes you actually use.

For a useful baseline, record a representative period of normal traffic and note request volume, input and output token counts, model, processing mode, and—where applicable—cached-token usage. Keep the workload and measurement period consistent when comparing before and after. Calculate the total bill as well as per-request or per-task cost; a cheaper request may not lower the overall bill if request volume grows.

Remove unnecessary requests and tokens
OpenAI’s cost-optimization guidance recommends limiting requests, minimizing input tokens, and keeping outputs concise. Remove duplicated context, unused instructions, and output detail the application does not need. Then evaluate the shortened prompt and response against representative tasks: fewer tokens are only a real improvement if the result still meets the quality requirements.

Choose a model that meets a measured quality target
A less expensive model can reduce cost and latency, but whether it is suitable depends on the task. OpenAI advises selecting models that balance reduced cost and latency with maintained accuracy. Test candidate models on examples that reflect real inputs, edge cases, and failure costs; compare accuracy or task success, not just fluency. Route work to a smaller model only when it meets the required quality bar.
Cache stable, repeated prompt prefixes
Prompt caching is most useful when requests share a stable prefix. OpenAI describes it as reusing work when requests share the same prompt prefix, and its current guide says eligible cached input tokens can receive discounts of up to 95%. That is a maximum discount on eligible cached input—not a promise to reduce total API spend by 95%.

Keep reusable instructions and context together at the beginning of requests, and put variable user-specific material later where possible. Measure actual cached-token usage rather than assuming similar-looking prompts will qualify. One-off requests and frequently changing prefixes may offer little opportunity for this optimization. Use asynchronous processing for work that can wait
For jobs that do not need an immediate response—such as offline evaluation or data enrichment—the Batch API may be a fit. OpenAI’s current documentation describes Batch as costing 50% less than synchronous APIs, with a 24-hour turnaround window. That trade-off suits delay-tolerant workloads, not interactive requests that must return promptly. Confirm current terms and whether the turnaround meets your operational needs.

Consider Flex for lower-priority requests
OpenAI’s cost guidance describes Flex processing as a lower-cost option with slower responses and occasional resource unavailability. It can suit work where timing and availability are less critical, but it is not a drop-in choice for latency-sensitive production traffic. Test the mode against the job’s deadline and failure-handling requirements before routing requests to it.
How to decide whether an optimization is worth keeping
- Set the baseline: capture representative spend, request volume, token categories, model, and processing mode.
- Define quality and latency limits: decide what task performance and response time are acceptable before changing production traffic.
- Test one lever at a time: compare a prompt change, model change, caching strategy, or processing mode using the same representative workload.
- Compare like with like: evaluate total cost and cost per task alongside quality, latency, and availability. Keep workload assumptions and measurement period consistent.
- Recheck current rates: calculate input, cached input, cache-write where applicable, and output costs for the selected model and mode using the live pricing table.
Pricing, cache behavior, and processing availability can change. Revisit the calculation when model rates or workload patterns change instead of treating an old estimate as a current price comparison.

What a 95% savings claim would need to establish
To substantiate a claim that total API costs fell by 95%, report the starting and ending bills, the measurement periods, the workload and request volume, the providers and models used, and the quality checks applied. Explain the calculation and whether the comparison includes all relevant token categories and processing charges. Without those details, the documented maximum discount on eligible cached input tokens does not establish a 95% reduction in total spend.
