For a fixed form on a familiar website, scripted browser automation is usually the more direct tool. An AI agent is useful when it must interpret changing page content and decide what to do next. They are not alternatives at the execution level: an agent can use browser automation to carry out its decisions.
What is the difference?
Browser automation performs the interactions
Browser automation is software that navigates web pages and interacts with their controls. A script can locate fields, enter values, click buttons and check whether expected results appear. Playwright is one example; its input documentation describes browser interaction primitives.

An AI agent chooses actions from observations
An agent adds a model-driven loop: it receives an observation of the page, chooses an action, and responds to the result. The application still needs an executor to operate the browser or computer. OpenAI’s computer-use guide describes applications providing an environment and executing model-requested actions. Anthropic’s computer-use documentation describes screenshot-based interaction, while its browser-use documentation covers page-aware browser actions.

The categories can be combined. OpenAI documents a JavaScript example using Playwright in an application-provided runtime; Anthropic’s SDK guide describes an application wrapping a browser automation library such as Playwright. These are documented integration patterns, not a claim that every agent uses the same architecture.

Browser-aware tools versus screenshot control
Page-aware browser interaction
Browser tools can expose page structure and references to elements, then use those references for actions such as entering form data. This can be more appropriate than screen coordinates when layout shifts, because the action can target a page element rather than a fixed position. References may be scoped to a tab and can become stale after navigation or substantial page changes, so refresh the page view when the agent’s references no longer match the current state.

Screenshot-driven computer use
Computer-use tools operate through screenshots and mouse or keyboard actions. That broader reach can help when a task crosses graphical interfaces or when a page does not expose controls usefully through a structured browser view. Anthropic describes full computer use as more general, but typically slower because it needs a fresh screenshot after each action batch. This is a description of the interaction pattern, not a comparative timing result for form filling.

- Map the workflow. If it is a repeatable sequence inside web pages and the required fields and buttons are accessible to a browser driver, start with scripted browser automation.
- Add an agent when decisions vary. Consider a model-driven loop if page content changes what should happen next, or if the task needs broader graphical interaction. The agent still depends on an executor to perform browser or computer actions.
- Test the real form behavior. Check authentication, dynamic fields, validation messages, navigation and the effect of submission on the specific site. Neither architecture alone establishes reliable completion across all forms.
- Set the review point. Inspect populated values and the destination before submission. Keep the user involved for sensitive or consequential actions.
Protect data and control what the agent can do
Treat page content as untrusted
A form or page can contain text that attempts to redirect an agent. Treat page text and tool results as information to interpret, not as authority to change the user’s instructions. OpenAI’s guidance says text in a page, document or tool result cannot grant permission or override user instructions.

Recognize that entering data can transmit it
Typing sensitive information into a form counts as transmission, even before a final submit button is clicked. OpenAI recommends keeping users in control of data transmission and other consequential actions. Do not assume a form-filling agent should submit every form unattended.
Limit the executor’s access
Run the browser and executor in an isolated environment with minimal privileges, appropriate host restrictions and a deliberate network policy. Anthropic’s browser guidance warns that checking only a requested navigation URL does not necessarily control redirects, links, form submissions or requests initiated by page content. Its SDK material also makes clear that the SDK does not itself supply a browser, desktop, ready-made driver or URL policy; the application must arrange the runtime and controls.

What the documentation does—and does not—settle
Official documentation explains the interaction patterns and recommended safeguards. It does not provide a representative comparison of form-completion accuracy, cost or runtime across websites. For a real deployment, the right choice depends on the form’s stability, accessible controls, authentication, data sensitivity and consequences of submission.
