AI Agent Security: What ShadowPaste Says It Built After a ₹29,000 API Bill

ShadowPaste’s README describes fake secrets in an AI-safe workspace and a policy-gated MCP gateway. The ₹29,000 bill in its creator’s post title has limited public context.

ShadowPaste is an open-source software project that aims to keep real credentials out of AI coding agents while controlling the tools those agents can use. Its creator, Amit Chahar, connects the project to a ₹29,000 API bill in the title of a September 16 DEV listing, but the accessible listing does not establish who billed him, what caused the charge, or whether it was paid or disputed. The project’s README describes the security design; those descriptions are not an independent audit or proof that every credential exposure can be prevented.

What the ₹29,000 bill does—and does not—tell us

The figure belongs to the headline of Amit Chahar’s DEV post, which is listed as published September 16. The accessible listing confirms the title but not the article’s full account. It therefore cannot substantiate the provider, billing period, usage that led to the charge, or whether the amount was paid or contested. Treat it as the stated origin story for the project, not as a verified billing case.

The project itself is documented in a public GitHub repository. ShadowPaste is software, not a physical security device. Its stated goal is to let AI coding agents work against a real codebase without directly exposing production credentials.

How ShadowPaste says its boundary works

The README describes two connected controls: virtualized secrets in repository files and a gateway that mediates agent tool calls. Together, they are intended to limit what the agent can see and what it can do.

#1 Best Overall

Secret virtualization for project files

  1. Scan: ShadowPaste looks through project files for secrets it recognizes.
  2. Vault: The README says detected real values are stored in an encrypted local vault.
  3. Substitute: It replaces those values in an AI-safe workspace with format-compatible fakes, so the agent can edit files without receiving the original credentials.
  4. Restore: After AI edits, the tool restores real values to the project files.

This approach is meant to preserve useful file formats while reducing direct exposure. Its effectiveness depends on what the scanner detects and on how the workflow handles files, edits, and secrets; the README’s description alone does not establish coverage against every way credentials can leak.

A policy-gated MCP gateway

For agent tool calls, the README describes a zero-trust MCP gateway that risk-scores requests and evaluates them against allow, ask, or deny policies. It says the gateway can inject single-use credentials, sanitize responses, and record an audit trail. The stated purpose is to mediate access rather than let an agent call tools with unrestricted credentials.

The repository also describes the audit chain as tamper-evident. That is a project design claim, not evidence that the system is resistant to every attack or a substitute for independent security review.

What the project documentation claims

ShadowPaste’s feature table claims 501 detection patterns across 322 providers (ShadowPaste repository, 2026). These are counts published by the project, not independently validated detection results. A pattern count does not by itself show how accurately secrets are detected, how often files are missed, or how the tool performs in a particular repository.

The README says ShadowPaste runs on the user’s infrastructure and has no ShadowPaste cloud. That describes the project’s stated deployment model; readers should still examine where their own agent, database, logs, and other connected services process or retain data.

What to check before adopting it

  • Review the current repository: The README lists Bun 1.3 or later (or Node 20 or later) and PostgreSQL as prerequisites. These are version-sensitive requirements, so verify the current instructions and supported versions before installation.
  • Check detection against your files: Understand which formats and secret types are covered, how missed or false detections are handled, and what happens to unrecognized credentials.
  • Understand the recovery path: Confirm how real values are restored after edits and how you would recover if a run is interrupted or produces unexpected changes.
  • Inspect gateway policies: Determine which actions are automatically allowed, which require approval, and which are denied; also review what gets logged and how long logs remain available.
  • Assess the threat model: A local encrypted vault, response sanitization, and audit trail are useful design elements, but none independently proves that credentials cannot escape through every agent, tool, or operational failure.
  • Look for independent review: The consulted project materials describe intended controls, not an independent security evaluation. Teams handling production access should review the code and deployment carefully before relying on it.

What the story amounts to

The available public material supports a careful distinction: the ₹29,000 bill is part of the author’s post title, while ShadowPaste’s README presents a specific proposed answer to credential exposure in AI coding workflows. That answer combines fake secrets in an AI-safe workspace with policy-controlled agent tool calls. The documentation explains the design, but it does not verify the bill’s circumstances or establish the security guarantees through independent testing.
