When a capable coding agent fails in production, the model may be part of the problem—but the model call is only one part of the system. The harness around it supplies context, runs tools, preserves task state, handles errors, coordinates work, and checks results. Those choices can change an agent’s behavior and reliability; they cannot make a model’s limitations disappear.
What “harness” means for a coding agent
A production agent is better understood as a system than as a prompt sent to a model. The model reasons over the information it receives and proposes actions. The harness determines the conditions under which that reasoning happens: what information is available, which actions can be taken, what happens when a tool fails, and how the team knows whether the task is actually complete.

That makes “model or harness?” a useful diagnostic question, but a false either-or. A weak model can make poor decisions even in a carefully designed system. A capable model can still be undermined by stale context, lost state, opaque tool failures, or checks that accept an incomplete result.

What the available comparisons do—and do not—show
METR’s February 13, 2026 time-horizon note compared models operating with different scaffolds on its task suite. In bootstrap samples, Opus 4.5 using Claude Code beat Opus 4.5 using ReAct 50.7% of the time; GPT-5 using Codex beat GPT-5 using Triframe 14.5% of the time. METR reports that neither difference was statistically significant. These figures are not general rankings of coding agents or predictions of production success. METR’s comparison and methodology describe a specific autonomous evaluation, not the interactive workflows in which people often use coding assistants.

- Server-grade thermal architecture: Utilizing a dedicated CPU/GPU airflow design, equipped with a 6-pipe dual-fan cooler, it maintains stable performance even under sustained loads, delivering up to 140W Turbo power while maintaining a 100W TDP, and operating with noise levels as low as 36 dB. An integrated 350W power supply ensures stable and reliable output for demanding computing tasks and fully loaded extended configurations.
The setups also differed in more than a scaffold label. METR notes that Claude Code and Codex use more elaborate prompts than the generic scaffolds, and that the specialized tools are optimized for their respective model families. The result is a comparison of complete configurations, not a clean isolation of one “harness” variable. It supports taking the surrounding system seriously; it does not prove that a harness matters more than a model in every task.
How product-layer decisions can change behavior
Anthropic’s April 23, 2026 account of Claude Code quality reports illustrates how changes outside model weights can affect the user experience. The company identified three contributing changes: a lower default reasoning-effort setting introduced to reduce latency, a prompt-caching implementation bug that repeatedly cleared prior thinking history after an idle period, and prompt changes. Anthropic said these issues were resolved by April 20 in Claude Code v2.1.116, and that its API and inference layer were unaffected. This is a vendor’s postmortem on its own product, not an independent experiment establishing a universal rule. Anthropic’s postmortem gives the details.
Anthropic also described medium reasoning effort as slightly less intelligent in its internal testing, but significantly less latent for most tasks. That is a product tradeoff among additional thinking, latency, and usage-limit hits—not evidence that one setting is always best. Anthropic’s report attributes those findings to its own testing.

Give the harness explicit jobs
The following is a practical engineering checklist, not a certified standard or a guarantee of successful deployments. Make each responsibility visible enough to inspect and test.
Prepare relevant context
Before the first action, assemble the project information needed for the task: applicable instructions, relevant files, constraints, and current state. Record what context was supplied so that a failure caused by missing or stale information can be distinguished from faulty reasoning.
Keep durable task state outside the transient conversation
Store task goals, completed steps, decisions, outstanding work, and important artifacts somewhere the agent or its orchestrator can recover after a context reset or interrupted run. Treat memory as explicit, inspectable state rather than assuming that a long conversation will remain available indefinitely.

Make tool outcomes and errors observable
Return structured success and failure information from tools. Distinguish a command that ran and failed from one that never ran, timed out, or returned incomplete output. Define which failures are retryable and prevent blind retries from duplicating side effects.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Isolate execution
Run generated code and commands within an environment whose permissions and access are appropriate to the task. Isolation limits the impact of mistaken or unsafe actions; it does not establish that the code is correct.
Verify independently
Do not treat a plausible explanation or a successful tool call as proof of completion. Use task-appropriate checks—such as tests, type checks, build results, or explicit acceptance criteria—and make their outputs part of the recorded run. A passing test suite only verifies what those tests cover.

Preserve traces for debugging
Capture enough of the run to reconstruct what context was used, what actions were attempted, what tools returned, which retries occurred, and what verification passed or failed. Logs should help identify the failure path without unnecessarily retaining secrets or sensitive data.
Coordinate parallel work explicitly
When multiple agents contribute to one change, make dependencies and shared state visible. A change can pass its local tests and still fail if it relies on a dependency or service unavailable in the target environment. An article published by DEV Community / Hackmamba recounts an AgentField postmortem in which a pull request assembled by more than 30 agents passed tests but failed in production because a dependency was unavailable; the account is secondary here, not an independently confirmed incident report. Parallelism needs integration checks as well as task-level checks.

Diagnose failures before changing models
Start with a concrete failure, not a general impression that the agent is “bad.” Classify the event by the earliest point where the run diverged from the desired result, then inspect the trace and test one targeted change.

- Reasoning failure: The required context and tools were available, but the agent made an incorrect decision or produced faulty work. Consider whether the model or task formulation is adequate.
- Missing or stale context: The agent acted on incomplete instructions, outdated files, or an incorrect view of project state. Fix context assembly or freshness before assuming the model cannot do the task.
- Tool execution or retry failure: A command failed, timed out, or produced ambiguous output, and the harness mishandled that result. Make the outcome explicit and test the retry or recovery path.
- Lost state: A context reset or interruption erased progress or changed the plan. Persist the task’s durable state and test recovery.
- Weak verification: The agent reported success, but the checks did not cover the actual acceptance criteria. Strengthen the independent checks.
- Coordination mismatch: Parallel work relied on incompatible assumptions or unavailable dependencies. Expose shared dependencies and verify the integrated result.
Then instrument that one failure path and compare recurrence after a specific change. If context, execution, and verification are sound but the same reasoning error persists, a different model or a revised task may be warranted. If the failure follows a missing state transition or swallowed tool error, changing models may leave the underlying defect untouched.
What to conclude from the “model versus harness” debate
Model capability sets important limits, but production behavior also depends on the system that surrounds the model. The practical question is not which side wins every comparison; it is which component failed in this run, and what evidence would show that a targeted change helped. Treat the agent as a composed system, preserve enough evidence to diagnose it, and evaluate models and harnesses in the workflows where the agent will actually operate.
