Prevent race conditions in an AI-agent workflow by defining who owns shared state, bounding concurrency, and making each external side effect safe to retry or reconcile. Treat orchestration-engine state and external systems as separate safety boundaries: deterministic state merging inside a framework does not make a database write, API call, or queued job safe from duplication or conflict.
What a race condition looks like in an agent workflow
A race condition occurs when two or more concurrent activities observe or change shared state—or act on the same external resource—and the final outcome depends on timing. In agent workflows, the competing activities may be parallel branches, separate agent runs, retries, or a replayed workflow.

For example, two branches can both read an account balance, independently decide that a payment is allowed, and then submit payments. The workflow may have combined its internal results consistently, yet the external system can still receive conflicting or duplicate writes. Preventing one kind of race does not automatically prevent the other.

Separate the two failure boundaries
- Orchestration-state races: concurrent steps update the workflow’s shared state. The relevant controls are state ownership, conflict rules, serialization, or framework-defined update semantics.
- External side-effect races: steps call APIs, write database rows, publish messages, or otherwise change systems outside the orchestrator. The target system must enforce the needed atomicity or idempotency, or the workflow must reconcile or compensate for outcomes.
Start with ownership and the shape of shared state
For each piece of shared state, decide whether one branch owns it, whether multiple updates can be combined safely, or whether changes must be serialized or made atomically. A value such as an append-only list may tolerate a merge rule; a balance, inventory count, or “current status” field often needs a stronger rule than “last update wins.” Choose based on the meaning of the data, not merely on what the orchestration framework can merge.

LangGraph describes deterministic application of concurrent node updates to its channels as a way to avoid data races within its engine. That is a framework-internal state behavior. It is not a guarantee that an arbitrary external API or database will merge concurrent writes safely.
Practical ownership choices
- Single writer: route changes to a designated step or service when simultaneous updates would be ambiguous.
- Safe merge: allow concurrent updates only when the operation and merge rule preserve the intended meaning, such as combining independent results rather than overwriting one shared decision.
- Serialization or atomic operation: use when the decision depends on the latest value or multiple changes must be treated as one indivisible operation. Put the constraint at the layer that owns the resource.
Make retries safe at the external-system boundary
A common failure sequence is: an agent submits a write, the target applies it, the response times out or is lost, and the workflow retries because it cannot record success. The retry can repeat an effect that already happened. A retry policy alone cannot tell whether the first attempt took effect.

Use an idempotency key for repeatable logical actions
- Identify the logical action, such as “create invoice for workflow run X,” rather than generating a new identity for every attempt.
- Send the same idempotency key on every retry of that action.
- Confirm that the receiving service actually recognizes the key and returns or preserves the prior result instead of applying the operation again.
- Persist the resulting status or identifier so later workflow steps can continue from the known outcome.
A key that is merely generated or passed through has no protective effect unless the target enforces it. AWS’s agent-orchestration guidance describes idempotency keys as one approach for non-idempotent calls.
When the target cannot enforce idempotency
Do not treat an uncertain timeout as proof that the write failed. Query or reconcile the target’s state before deciding whether to retry, or design a compensating action when the business process can undo or offset a duplicate effect. Compensation is a deliberate follow-up operation, not a guarantee that the original action never occurred; account for cases where compensation also fails or needs retry.

Keep nondeterministic I/O outside replayed workflow logic
Durable workflow engines may replay workflow code to reconstruct state after a failure. If replay reissues a model request, tool call, external request, or database read, the result can differ from the one that informed the original execution. Temporal’s AI Agent Reference Architecture places these nondeterministic interactions in Activities so replay can use recorded results. It states: “The single most important rule in a Temporal AI stack is that all non-deterministic I/O belongs in Activities, not Workflows.”
Use a clear boundary: workflow logic coordinates and makes decisions from recorded outcomes; an activity or equivalent execution boundary performs the external interaction. Consider the failure point around that interaction explicitly: if the external effect succeeds but the activity result is not durably recorded, a retry may still repeat the effect. The activity therefore needs an idempotency or reconciliation strategy as well as a replay-safe placement.

Bound fan-out and prevent runaway agent graphs
Dynamic graphs selected as the agent reasons need guardrails because their depth and parallelism may not be known in advance. AWS Well-Architected guidance recommends cycle detection, maximum-depth limits, and bounded fan-out. Its examples—10–15 steps for maximum depth and 5–10 concurrent branches—are context-specific guidance, not measured safety thresholds or industry standards; the page’s publication year is not stated in the retrieved material.
For a deterministic workflow with a known graph, AWS describes explicit parallel or map states with retry and catch handling. For a dynamic graph, apply controls to graph growth as well as to each individual tool or API call.

- Set a maximum depth and detect cycles.
- Bound the number of concurrent branches and constrain fan-out at the layer where it can multiply work.
- Define what happens when a branch fails, times out, or exceeds a limit: retry, catch and route, cancel related work, or stop the run.
- Apply independent concurrency limits to workflows, agents, tools or APIs, and model calls where each resource has its own capacity or cost constraint.
Compare execution guarantees by workflow mode
Do not infer external exactly-once effects from a workflow engine’s execution guarantee. AWS Step Functions documents different execution semantics for its workflow types; select the row for the mode actually in use and separately design each external operation for retries and uncertain outcomes.
| Step Functions mode | Documented execution guarantee | What it does—and does not—settle |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | Exactly-once workflow execution | Describes the workflow mode’s execution behavior; it is not, by itself, proof that an external system applied a side effect exactly once. |
| Asynchronous Express | At-least-once | Design side-effecting operations to tolerate possible repeated execution. |
| Synchronous Express | At-most-once | Describes the workflow mode’s execution behavior; verify the selected mode’s persistence and idempotency details in the Step Functions Developer Guide. |
AWS’s guide also describes differences among these modes in persistence and automatic idempotency behavior. Those properties are mode-specific; do not transfer a guarantee from one mode to another or treat workflow-level semantics as a substitute for the target service’s own protections.
Instrument concurrency so failures are diagnosable
Observability should show which branches ran, where time was spent, what retried, and what happened at external boundaries. AWS guidance calls out step duration, parallel efficiency, payload sizes, graph depth, and distributed tracing. Track these against the service objectives and failure modes that matter to your system.

- Retry and timeout outcomes: capture attempts, timeouts, final disposition, and whether an external effect was confirmed, reconciled, or compensated.
- Payload and trace context: monitor payload sizes and propagate distributed trace context across orchestration and tool boundaries.
Temporal’s task documentation also discusses workflow-task replay and workflow-ID deduplication. Treat workflow identity and history as operational controls to understand, not as a blanket guarantee that every external side effect is deduplicated.
Quick Recap
A design review checklist
- Which state can be written concurrently, and who owns each value?
- Which updates can be merged safely, and which require serialization or atomicity?
- For each external write, what happens if it succeeds but the workflow times out before recording success?
- Does the receiver enforce a stable idempotency key, or is reconciliation or compensation required?
- Which parts of the workflow are replayed, and where are nondeterministic reads and calls executed?
- Are graph depth, cycles, branch fan-out, and tool/API concurrency bounded?
- Can operators see branch histories, retry outcomes, timeouts, and external-effect status?
