Age of Engineering is a legacy Minecraft 1.10.2 technology-progression modpack. The dependable setup is the 1.1.2 pack release with Forge 1.10.2-12.18.3.2511 and a Java 8 runtime. Install the client as a clean Forge instance, then build a multiplayer server by installing Forge separately and copying the client’s mods, config, resources, and scripts folders.
Running a modpack with friends? Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks (CurseForge, FTB, Technic) and free DDoS protection.
You can host it on your own computer or rent a managed server. Self-hosting gives maximum control but requires networking and maintenance; a provider can simplify installation, restarts, and backups, provided it still supports this exact legacy combination.

What Age of Engineering is
Age of Engineering is a challenge-focused pack built around industrial automation, resource processing, and staged progression rather than a normal open-ended survival start. Its progression is divided into 15 ages. Recipes and machines are gated by specific blocks or items, so reaching the next technology tier requires completing the previous objectives instead of crafting everything immediately.
The pack includes an in-game FTB Utilities guide that acts as the practical roadmap. Read it before choosing a base location or committing to a large factory: the guide explains the order of milestones and the items that unlock later recipes. Early-game mechanics are also altered. For example, smeltery yields differ from the assumptions many players bring from an unmodified version of the relevant mod, as documented by the FTB wiki.

This is not a current Minecraft release. CurseForge lists Minecraft 1.10.2 and Age of Engineering-1.1.2.zip as the latest listed pack release, dated November 25, 2017. Treat every version number as a compatibility requirement, not as a suggestion for a modern installation.
Compatibility requirements at a glance
| Component | Required or documented value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Minecraft | 1.10.2 | The pack’s listed game version; newer Minecraft versions are different mod environments. |
| Age of Engineering | 1.1.2, listed November 25, 2017 | The latest release shown in the CurseForge listing used for this guide. |
| Forge | 1.10.2-12.18.3.2511 | The Forge release page identifies this as the recommended/latest build for Minecraft 1.10.2. |
| Java | Java 8 | Forge’s repository maps Minecraft 1.16.5 and older to Java 8, which includes 1.10.2. |
| Memory | No authoritative minimum published | Actual needs depend on the launcher, operating system, view distance, world, and other running software. |
Check which Java runtime your launcher actually uses. Installing Java 8 on the computer does not guarantee that a launcher has selected it; many launchers maintain their own runtime setting.

- Obtain the correct pack file. Open the Age of Engineering project’s CurseForge files listing and select the 1.1.2 release for Minecraft 1.10.2. Do not combine files from another release just because the names look similar.
- Create or select a separate launcher instance. Keeping this pack isolated prevents modern profiles, shader loaders, or unrelated mods from changing the legacy environment.
- Install Forge. Select Minecraft 1.10.2 and install Forge 12.18.3.2511 from the official Forge download page. If your launcher offers a pack-import function, verify that it still reports this Minecraft and Forge pair after import.
- Assign Java 8. In the launcher’s instance or global Java settings, choose a Java 8 executable. Record the selected path so you can verify it later if startup fails.
- Set memory conservatively. Large technology packs can need more memory than a vanilla world, but no universal minimum is published for Age of Engineering. Start with a sensible allocation for your hardware, leave enough RAM for the operating system, and increase it only if logs show memory pressure or the game repeatedly runs out of memory.
- Launch once with an empty instance. A clean first start allows the launcher to create its game, configuration, and libraries directories. Close the game after reaching the title screen before copying or replacing pack files.
- Import the pack’s contents using your launcher’s documented method. Confirm that the resulting instance contains the pack’s mods and configuration rather than only a downloaded zip sitting in a downloads folder.
- Start the game and create a test world. Use the FTB Utilities guide immediately. Confirm that the expected gated recipes and machines appear before investing time in a permanent world.
What a successful first launch looks like
- The title screen identifies a Forge-based 1.10.2 installation.
- The mod list contains the Age of Engineering components without duplicate or missing-file errors.
- A new world loads without a crash during registry or recipe initialization.
- The in-game FTB Utilities guide is available and describes the age-based progression.
Understanding the 15-age progression
The pack’s age system is more than a cosmetic checklist. Gated recipes determine which machines, alloys, power systems, and automation methods are available at each stage. A machine that is routine in another modpack may be intentionally unavailable until you produce a particular component.

Use the guide as your dependency map
Open the FTB Utilities guide whenever you are unsure what to do next. Treat each age as a dependency chain: identify the gate, list the materials needed to satisfy it, then build only the infrastructure required for that milestone. This approach avoids wasting scarce early resources on equipment that the pack expects you to unlock later.
Expect altered processing yields
Do not assume that a familiar smeltery recipe produces the same output as in a standard installation. The FTB wiki documents different early smeltery yields for this pack. Check the in-game guide and recipe viewer before calculating how much ore, fuel, or casting material you need.
Client troubleshooting
The launcher reports an incompatible version
Recheck all three values together: Minecraft 1.10.2, Age of Engineering 1.1.2, and Forge 12.18.3.2511. A profile that silently upgraded Minecraft or selected a different Forge build can fail before the game window appears. Create a fresh instance rather than trying to repair a profile that contains modern libraries.

The game crashes during startup
- Confirm that the launcher is using Java 8, not a newer runtime.
- Remove unrelated mods, shader loaders, and optimization packages from the test instance.
- Check that the pack was imported completely and that its configuration files match the selected release.
- Temporarily lower the allocated memory if the operating system is swapping, then increase it gradually only when the machine has available physical RAM.
Recipes or machines are missing
Verify that you are playing the intended pack instance, not a plain Forge profile. A successful Forge launch without the pack’s mods can look normal while omitting all gated recipes. Compare the mod list and the presence of the pack’s configuration and scripts directories.
Build a self-hosted server
The pack author does not publish a separate server-file archive. The supported method is to install a normal Forge server and copy the client’s pack folders into it. The author specifically identifies mods, config, resources, and scripts as the folders to copy; use the folders from the installed client, not those inside the downloaded CurseForge zip.
Prepare a clean server directory
- Create a new directory used only for this server. Avoid placing it inside a client instance, because server logs, world data, and configuration should remain independent.
- Download the Forge 1.10.2 installer that matches the client’s 12.18.3.2511 build.
- Install Java 8 on the server computer and confirm that the command-line Java executable resolves to that version.
- Run the Forge installer’s server option. Forge documents both the graphical Install server choice and the headless command
java -jar forge-x.xx.x-installer.jar --installServer. Replace the example filename with the installer you downloaded.
Copy the pack files from the client
- Locate the working client instance that successfully loaded Age of Engineering.
- Copy its
mods, config, resources, andscriptsdirectories into the new server directory. - Merge only when the destination is empty or belongs to the same pack release. Do not overwrite a different modpack’s files and do not copy a random archive’s server folders in place of the client folders.
- Keep the client and server on the same Age of Engineering release and Forge build. Every player joining should use that same combination.
Accept the EULA and start the server
- Start the Forge server once. It will generate initial files and normally stop while waiting for EULA acceptance.
- Open
eula.txt, read the Minecraft EULA, and change the acceptance setting only if you agree to its terms. - Start the server again using the Forge-generated server launch files or the startup command appropriate to your installation.
- Watch the console until world generation and mod initialization finish. The first launch can take longer while libraries and configuration files are created.
- Connect from the same computer using a local connection before attempting remote access. A local test separates mod or world errors from firewall and router problems.
Invite friends safely
Remote players need a reachable server address, but opening a home network to the internet carries security risk. Minecraft’s official server guidance warns that exposing your public IP can reveal information about your connection. Share connection details only with people you trust, keep the server software and operating system updated where possible, and limit administrative access.

- Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10

Use a staged networking test
- Confirm the server accepts a local connection.
- Check the computer’s firewall and allow the Java server process only as broadly as necessary.
- Configure the router or gateway according to the official Minecraft server instructions rather than copying an arbitrary port-forwarding rule.
- Test from a different network, such as a phone hotspot, before distributing the address to friends.
- If remote access remains unreliable, consider managed hosting instead of exposing a home machine.
Never give players your server computer’s operating-system credentials. Minecraft operator permissions should be granted separately and only to people who need them.

Managed hosting is optional. BoxToPlay advertises one-click Age of Engineering installation, and PLAYNHOST describes selecting the pack through its CurseForge hosting panel. Those pages show that a convenience path may exist; they do not establish current performance, pricing, backups, or compatibility for every plan.
| Decision factor | Self-hosting | Managed hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Control | Full access to files, Java settings, logs, and configuration. | Control depends on the panel and whether SFTP or equivalent file access is included. |
| Setup effort | You install Forge, copy pack folders, accept the EULA, and maintain the machine. | The provider may automate pack installation and startup. |
| Networking | May require firewall, router, and home-network configuration. | The provider generally supplies a reachable address and abstracts home routing. |
| Reliability | Depends on your hardware, power, bandwidth, and internet connection. | Plans may include automated restarts or backups; verify the exact terms. |
| Version fidelity | You control the exact 1.10.2/1.1.2 files. | Confirm that the panel still offers that legacy pack and does not install a different release. |
| Cost | Uses existing hardware and bandwidth, with electricity and maintenance as practical costs. | Adds a recurring service charge; the applicable price depends on the selected provider and plan. |
Questions to ask before paying
- Is Age of Engineering 1.1.2 for Minecraft 1.10.2 available today, or only a similarly named pack?
- Which Forge build is installed, and can you change it to 12.18.3.2511?
- How much CPU, memory, and storage are guaranteed rather than merely advertised?
- Are automated backups included, how long are they retained, and can you download them?
- Do you receive SFTP or another method to upload the client-derived
mods, config, resources, andscriptsfolders? - Where is the server located, and can you migrate the world if the service is unsuitable?
- What happens if the provider removes support for a legacy Java or Forge version?
Keeping a long-running world healthy
Freeze the working versions
Record the pack release, Minecraft version, Forge build, Java 8 distribution, launcher profile, and any server-side edits. Do not click an automatic “update all” control on either the client or host. A seemingly minor mod update can change recipes or world data in a progression pack.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
Back up before experiments
Stop the server before copying its world and configuration directories. Keep at least one backup outside the server machine and label it with the date and version set. Test that an archive can actually be opened before deleting older backups.
Move between hosts carefully
- Stop the old server cleanly.
- Download the world, server configuration, and the exact mod, resource, and script folders.
- Install the same Forge and Java versions on the destination.
- Restore the files into a new directory and start without inviting players.
- Join with a test account, verify machines and recipes, and only then change the public connection details.
Common server failures and fixes
Clients are rejected at connection
Compare the client and server mod lists, pack release, and Forge build. Missing or extra mods can prevent a handshake even when both sides say “1.10.2.” Re-copy the four pack folders from a known-good client if the server was assembled from mixed sources.
The server starts but recipes differ
The server may contain a different config or scripts directory than the client. Stop it, back up the current files, and replace those directories with the ones from the client instance that displays the expected progression.
Players time out while the local test works
This points to networking rather than pack content. Recheck the firewall, router configuration, and the address being shared. Test from outside the home network and avoid publishing the public address beyond trusted players.
The server runs out of memory
There is no authoritative Age of Engineering minimum to apply universally. Review the Java command, the host’s actual memory limit, world size, view distance, and other processes. Increase the allocation only within the physical limits of the machine or hosting plan; allocating more than the system can provide makes stability worse.
Which hosting method should you choose?
Choose self-hosting when you already have a dependable computer, understand basic Java and network administration, and want complete control over legacy files. Choose managed hosting when keeping a home server reachable is impractical and the provider confirms the exact Age of Engineering release, Forge build, Java support, resource limits, backups, and file-access options in writing. In both cases, preserve a tested client and a restorable world backup before inviting a group.
