In Age of Apes, the best use depends on whether you are finishing a building or research breakpoint, preparing for combat or an event, or developing your account over time. There is no evidence-backed universal “spend diamonds here first” order.
Start by checking the label in your current game client. The official listings confirm several resource systems and in-app purchases, but they do not establish “diamonds” as the current official currency name. Apple’s version notes mention Ape Coins for selected packs; that does not prove Ape Coins and diamonds are interchangeable.

Identify exactly what you are about to spend
Before opening a shop or confirming an upgrade, write down the resource name exactly as the game displays it. Keep these categories separate:

- Upgrade materials: ordinary resources used for buildings, army growth, research, or other progression.
- Speedups: items that reduce construction, research, training, or healing time.
- Action Points (AP): energy used for specific activities and event actions.
- Event tokens: temporary currencies whose value depends on the live event shop and reward track.
- Premium currency: a paid or premium balance, which may have a different name from the word “diamonds” used in player conversations.
Do not convert one category into another in your planning. A speedup can save time but cannot pay a material cost; AP can enable event actions but cannot automatically finish research; an event token may expire or become unusable when its event ends. If the client uses a different label than a guide or community post, follow the client label and read the current item description.

Choose a goal before choosing a purchase
Official store descriptions present Age of Apes as an online MMO strategy game built around outpost development, army building, research, construction, group play, exploration, and PvP/PvE competition. Those systems create different “good” uses for the same resource. Decide which of the following goals applies before spending.
Goal 1: Reach a building or research milestone
Spend materials or time-saving items when a specific completion unlocks something you can use immediately: a new building level, a research tier, a troop capability, or access to a requirement for your group. A vague aim such as “make the account stronger” is not enough. Name the exact unlock, its remaining cost, and the next action you will take after completion.
Check whether the upgrade is blocked by more than one requirement. Finishing a construction timer early is less useful if you still lack the required research, materials, or army condition. When several queues are available, prioritize the queue whose completion changes your options rather than merely producing a small statistical increase.
Goal 2: Qualify for a combat or event reward
If you are saving for a mutant, Gigantos, Planet Wars, clan competition, or another live activity, compare the reward milestones with the cost of participation. Confirm the event’s start and end times, scoring rules, eligible actions, and shop contents in the current client. An event reward is only valuable if your account can reach the relevant threshold without exhausting resources needed for a more important upgrade.
Do not assume that a pack, token exchange, or event bundle is efficient because it is labeled “limited time.” Limited availability creates urgency, not proof of value. Record what the action gives you, what it costs, and what free actions remain available before the event closes.
Goal 3: Improve general account development
For routine development, favor spending that removes a bottleneck affecting several systems. For example, a research requirement that unlocks multiple future upgrades can be more consequential than a small, isolated boost. This is a planning principle, not a fixed ranking: the best choice changes with your outpost level, army needs, server environment, and current objectives.

A practical spend-or-save checklist
Run this check every time you consider using premium currency, a rare speedup, or a large stockpile of materials.
- Read the live description. Confirm the resource name, amount consumed, expiration rules, and the exact reward or effect.
- State the objective in one sentence. Example: “I need this research finished before my clan’s next scoring window.”
- Measure the immediate gain. Note the level, unlock, time saved, event points, or reward tier you will actually receive.
- Check the waiting alternative. Estimate what you can earn through normal play, free claims, current queues, or the remaining event time.
- Check the opportunity cost. List the next two uses for the same resource and identify whether spending now would delay either one.
- Verify eligibility. Make sure the action counts for the event or milestone you are targeting; some actions may not score or may apply only to a particular activity.
- Confirm the final screen. Re-read the quantity and reward immediately before tapping the purchase or exchange button.
If you cannot answer steps two through five, save the resource while you gather the missing information. Waiting is reversible; an accidental premium purchase usually is not.
How to handle each resource type
Ordinary upgrade materials
Use ordinary materials when they complete a planned requirement and leave enough stock for the next prerequisite. Avoid emptying every material storehouse merely to start a long upgrade if that prevents army training, research, or event participation that is more urgent for your account.
When several upgrades have similar costs, select the one that removes a dependency for other systems. Keep a written target for the next milestone so that routine collection has a purpose. Because costs and requirements can change with updates, verify the amount in the current client rather than relying on an old screenshot or post.
Speedups
A speedup has value only when the time saved matters. Use one to meet a known deadline, open a queue before an event window, or finish a prerequisite that unlocks work you can start immediately. Do not burn a large speedup to remove a few minutes simply because the button is available.
Separate construction, research, training, and healing needs in your inventory if the game does so. A speedup that applies to one category may not help another. If you have a construction or research contract that adds a queue or progression benefits, read its current terms and decide whether the extra queue changes your plan; the existence of the feature does not establish that purchasing it is good value for every player.

Action Points
Action Points are not interchangeable with premium currency. A community guide dated November 12, 2024 discusses collecting free AP and saving it for activities including mutants, Gigantos, and Planet Wars. Treat that as an activity-specific planning reference, not a permanent rule for every event or a recommendation about diamonds.
Before spending AP, check whether the activity awards points, drops, ranking progress, or a shop currency that you actually need. Save enough for the event window you are targeting, but do not let AP cap out if the game stops regenerating it at the maximum. The correct balance depends on the current cap, regeneration rules, and event schedule shown in your client.
Event tokens
Event tokens should be valued against the event shop’s live exchange list. Buy the item that supports your stated milestone, not the item with the most attractive name or largest advertised bundle. Check whether tokens carry over, expire, or convert after the event. If the rules are silent, assume nothing and look for an in-game timer or terms panel.

Premium currency and “diamonds”
Use premium currency only after comparing the exact result with a free or delayed route. The official listings disclose in-app purchases, and Apple’s notes identify Ape Coins as a payment option for select packs. They do not publish a universal exchange rate, and they do not show that a premium purchase is necessary for progression. Treat every offer as account-specific and time-sensitive: inspect the quantity, contents, region, server, and expiration shown at checkout.
When saving for an event beats upgrading now
Saving is usually defensible when all three conditions apply:
- The event has a clearly defined reward you can realistically reach.
- The resource will earn event progress or unlock an exchange unavailable outside the event.
- Delaying the ordinary upgrade will not block a prerequisite, queue, or combat requirement you need first.
Spend before the event when the upgrade itself is required to participate, when the event reward is below the value of the immediate unlock, or when the event’s rules do not credit the action you planned. Re-check the schedule after updates; event timing, rewards, and paid options can change.

Use calculators without treating them as the final authority
Age of Apes Guides provides community-compiled research requirements and calculators for estimating resources and speedups. The site says its data comes from collection, independent research, and player collaboration. Its Electronic Technology table also accounts for research-saving talents, and it notes that paid packs can reduce some research times.

Use these tools to build a forecast, then verify every live requirement in the game:
- Enter your current level, target level, available talents, and the resource type requested by the calculator.
- Record the estimated materials, speedups, and completion time separately.
- Check whether the estimate assumes research-saving talents, a paid pack, a contract, or another modifier.
- Open the same upgrade in your client and compare each requirement line by line.
- Replace the estimate with the client value if the two differ, and keep the date of your check in your notes.
Community data can lag a balance update or reflect assumptions that do not match your account. It is a planning aid, not a guarantee of the current shop price, event reward, or research cost.
Paid packs and acceleration: evaluate the trade-off
Paid packs and construction or research benefits may save time, add resources, or provide a queue. The existence of those benefits does not prove that paying is efficient or required. Compare the offer with what you can earn through regular play and with the milestone you are trying to reach.
Ask four questions before buying:
- What exact amount and item types arrive immediately?
- Which timers, queues, or progression benefits are included, and for how long?
- Does the purchase help the event or milestone you named, or merely accelerate an unrelated system?
- Would waiting for free rewards, normal regeneration, or a later offer leave your account in a better position?
Never infer value from a discount percentage alone. A lower price for items you do not need is still wasted spending. Keep a personal budget separate from your in-game resource plan and use the platform’s purchase confirmation carefully.

Following an old “best spend” list
Static rankings become unreliable when event rewards, pack contents, or progression features change. Replace the list with the current event panel and your own milestone. If a guide gives a date, version, or assumption, check that it still matches your client.

Confusing currency names
Player terminology can differ from official labels. If someone tells you to spend diamonds, first identify whether they mean premium currency, event tokens, AP, or another item. Do not assume that Ape Coins, diamonds, and ordinary resources share a balance or exchange rate.
Spending for time with no deadline
If there is no event window, queue bottleneck, or combat need, a speedup often has less strategic value. Let the timer run while you collect the materials required for the next meaningful milestone.
Ignoring the next prerequisite
After an accidental or premature upgrade, stop additional spending and inspect the dependency chain. Redirect future collection toward the missing requirement rather than trying to repair the decision with another impulsive purchase.
Three decision examples
Example: a research timer with no event
You have enough speedups to finish research today, but no event or deadline rewards doing so. Check the next research requirement and your material reserves. If finishing now would leave you unable to start the next useful project, keep the speedups and let the timer run.
Example: an event milestone within reach
An event is ending soon and your current activity would cross a reward threshold. Confirm that the activity scores, calculate the remaining AP or materials, and compare the reward with the upgrade you would postpone. Spend only the amount needed to reach the threshold; do not empty your inventory for a higher tier you cannot realistically attain.
Example: a premium pack offered during a shortage
The shop offers a pack containing a resource you lack. Read the complete contents, verify the region and account eligibility, and compare the pack with the free income available before your deadline. If the pack does not solve the specific bottleneck or the price exceeds your budget, close the offer and continue with the delayed plan.
Keep your plan current
Review your spending plan whenever the game updates, a new event starts, or your account enters a new progression tier. Record the client version or date beside any cost you write down. Official listings and event details are volatile, and a community calculator can reflect older requirements or different talent assumptions.
The safest habit is simple: identify the resource, define the milestone, compare immediate and delayed outcomes, verify the live numbers, and spend the smallest amount that accomplishes the goal.
