After Using CarPlay, Android Auto’s Flaws Are Hard to Unsee. Which Ones Hold Up?

Android Auto's flaws can look glaring after switching from CarPlay, but many come down to specific behaviors, setup requirements, or app choices. Here is how to tell which ones hold up.

Whether Android Auto’s flaws are “glaring” depends on which tasks you perform in the car, which phone and vehicle you pair, and which apps you run. Switching from CarPlay makes differences look sharper because your habits were built around the other system. The available evidence supports specific, testable differences in behavior. It does not support a broad verdict that Android Auto is flawed across the board.

What makes a complaint worth taking seriously

“The voice assistant is worse” is hard to act on. “Voice replies to a text failed three times on a 40-minute drive over the same route” is something you can check, repeat, and compare. Before you decide a behavior is a deal-breaker, run it through three filters:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Frequency: Does it happen on every drive, or only in certain conditions such as a particular cable, Wi-Fi network, or app version?
  • Stakes: Does it pull your eyes off the road, or is it an inconvenience you tolerate?
  • Workaround: Can a setting, a different app, or a different connection method fix it?

A flaw that passes all three filters is a real product difference. A flaw that fails the workaround test may be a setup problem.

Where the two systems actually differ

Both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto place core phone functions such as navigation, calls, messaging, and media on a compatible car display. The details diverge in ways that matter in daily use. The table below separates platform-level facts from behavior that depends on a specific app or setup.

Axis Apple CarPlay Android Auto What to check before judging
Navigation apps Apple Maps plus third-party navigation apps. Apple’s CarPlay page lists Google Maps and Waze among the choices. Google Maps is available. Other compatible navigation apps are not itemized in the sources used here. Run the same app on both systems to separate platform behavior from app behavior.
Voice assistant Siri. A reviewer’s Siri observations were made on the iOS 27 public beta. Gemini behavior. The August 1, 2026 TechRadar review preferred it overall on one trip. Test the same spoken requests on the same OS and app versions you actually use.
Dashboard layout CarPlay Home. A TechRadar reviewer preferred some aspects of its layout. Not stated in the sources used for this article. Count how many taps or glances a fixed set of tasks takes.
Messaging Native messaging workflow, which a reviewer described as strong. iOS 26 added Tapbacks and pinned conversations for CarPlay, per Apple. Not stated in the sources used for this article. Send and receive a reply while driving, then note how many steps it took on each system.
Recent platform additions Per Apple’s June 9, 2025 iOS 26 announcement: widgets, Live Activities, pinned conversations, Tapbacks, and a compact incoming-call view. Not stated in the sources used for this article. Confirm availability for your region and device in current Apple release notes.
Connection requirements Vehicle-dependent. Requirements for wired and wireless use are not stated in the sources used for this article. Wired and wireless requirements are listed below, from Google’s Android Auto help page. Confirm with your vehicle manufacturer before assuming a setup will work.

Keep platform capabilities separate from app behavior. If a map reroutes slowly, that may be the navigation app rather than the projection system.

Setup problems that look like platform flaws

Many complaints about Android Auto trace back to connection requirements. Check these before blaming the software.

Wired Android Auto

Google’s help page lists these requirements for wired use:

  • An Android phone running Android 9.0 or higher
  • An active data plan
  • A car that is compatible with Android Auto
  • A high-quality USB cable

Wireless Android Auto

Google’s wireless setup section lists these requirements:

AAWireless Two – Wireless Android Auto Adapter – Convert Factory Wired Android Auto to Wireless – Bluetooth & Wi-Fi Auto Connect – Easy Plug & Play – Multifunction Button – Made in Europe
  • Compatible with wired-only Android Auto systems
  • Requires Android 11+
  • Multifunctional button for easy phone pairing and switching
  • Connects unlimited phones, perfect for road trips
  • Plug & play setup, no tech skills needed
  • A compatible phone with an active data plan
  • 5 GHz Wi-Fi support on the phone
  • Android 11.0, which the help page lists as a supported version for wireless projection
  • A compatible car or aftermarket stereo

Google directs users to the vehicle manufacturer for model-specific compatibility. Help pages change, so verify against the current Android Auto help page before you buy hardware.

If wired projection drops or fails to start

  1. Confirm the phone runs Android 9.0 or higher and that the data plan is active.
  2. Replace the USB cable with a high-quality cable and confirm the connectors match your phone and car port.
  3. Confirm the vehicle is listed as compatible by its manufacturer.
  4. If the problem persists after these checks, test the same route on a different phone or car to determine whether the issue follows the phone or the vehicle.

A cable can fix a connection problem. It cannot fix a layout, mapping, messaging, or assistant limitation.

What the firsthand comparison found

TechRadar contributor David Nield published a comparison on August 1, 2026, based on a 250-mile round trip in the UK. He reported preferring Android Auto overall, mainly for the Google Maps and Gemini behavior he used. He also said he preferred some aspects of CarPlay’s layout and found its native messaging workflow strong.

Three limits apply. The review covers one car and one trip, so it is not a controlled or representative test. The CarPlay leg ran on the iOS 27 public beta, so any Siri observations reflect that beta rather than a final release. Nield’s split verdict reflects his priorities, not a universal ranking.

How to run a fair comparison of your own

  1. Record the phone model and OS version, the car make, model, and year, the connection type (wired or wireless), and the version of each navigation and messaging app.
  2. Use the same navigation app on both systems where possible. Google Maps is available on both, which removes one major variable.
  3. Run the same task list on each system: start a route by voice, reroute mid-drive, read and reply to a message, change a playlist, and place a call from contacts.
  4. Count failed commands, extra taps, and moments where you had to look at the screen beyond a brief glance.
  5. Repeat the tests on several drives at different times of day, since one trip can reflect one set of traffic and network conditions.

Record the results in the same table so your conclusions rest on counts rather than impressions.

Platform changes and usage figures to keep in context

Apple’s June 9, 2025 iOS 26 announcement added several CarPlay features, listed in the table above. Apple’s announcement described iOS 26 in promotional terms, including the statement that it “makes iPhone even more helpful.” That is Apple’s own description, not an independent evaluation of CarPlay.

The same announcement cited more than 600 million CarPlay uses per day. That figure is Apple’s, from 2025. The announcement does not describe independent auditing or methodology, so treat it as a company-reported usage figure rather than a measured comparison with Android Auto.

Where the evidence stops

A 2018 appendix from the AAA Foundation is the older research relevant here. It concerns earlier vehicle and software configurations and supports one durable point: automakers implement projection systems differently, so the same phone platform can behave differently across cars. It is not current feature documentation.

No independent expert assessment ranking the two systems was identified for this article. The clearest published comparison is one reviewer’s experience on one trip. If Android Auto’s flaws feel glaring to you, the useful question is which specific behavior bothers you, on which phone and car, and whether a setup change or app change resolves it. Those answers will be more reliable than any headline verdict.
