For solo creators, Audacity is a strong free place to start: it records from a microphone or mixer and runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. For remote interviews, compare Zencastr and Riverside by participant count, separate tracks, recording limits, and whether video and editing tools are part of the plan. The right low-cost choice depends on how you record—not just whether a plan says “free.”
Choose software for the way you record
Solo recording and editing
Audacity is a free desktop option for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its FAQ says it supports live recording through a microphone or mixer, so you can record narration or a solo show without paying for core recording software. It is a practical starting point if you are comfortable recording and editing on a computer.

Remote interviews
For interviews recorded across locations, look beyond editing features. Check how many people can join, whether each speaker gets a separate track, how recording is handled, and whether your expected monthly hours fit the plan’s allowance. Video creators should also compare resolution and watermark restrictions.

How to compare the real cost of a remote workflow
- Estimate hours per month. Count recording time, not just the finished episode length. A long interview can consume more of a plan’s allowance than the edited episode suggests.
- Separate one-time from recurring limits. Riverside Free’s listed two-hour multitrack allowance is one-off; its paid tiers list monthly allowances. Zencastr advertises unlimited recording on Free, but that is a vendor claim and should be verified against its current plan details.
- Count participants and tracks. Confirm the guest limit and whether separate speaker tracks are included in the exact plan you intend to use. Separate tracks provide more flexibility when correcting an individual voice in editing.
- Include video requirements. If video is part of the deliverable, account for resolution and watermarks as well as recording hours. An audio-only need may not justify paying for video capabilities.
- Check post-production and export needs. Confirm which editing tools and export options are included, and whether they fit your publishing workflow. Do not assume recording software includes hosting or distribution.
What you need to record a podcast
- A recording input: a suitable microphone or mixer connected to your computer is enough to use Audacity’s live recording workflow. A new microphone is optional, not a universal requirement.
- Recording software: use a desktop editor such as Audacity for solo local recording, or a remote recording service when guests need to record from separate locations.
- A quiet recording space: reduce avoidable background noise before recording; software cannot reliably remove every distraction without affecting voice quality.
- A publishing destination: recording and editing software are not automatically podcast hosting. Hosting providers manage the RSS feed and may offer additional capabilities such as show submission, chapters, dynamic ads, transcripts, video publishing, or subscriptions.
Export settings and podcast publishing
Choose export settings for the destination that will publish your show. Apple’s requirements for RSS podcast audio accept MP3 or AAC and give recommended settings by sample rate and channel count. Its subscriber-audio requirements are separate, so do not assume RSS settings apply to subscriber audio. Lower bit rates can introduce audible artifacts; check both Apple’s current guidance and your hosting provider’s requirements before exporting.

Common selection problems and how to avoid them
Choosing a free plan that runs out mid-production
Calculate your expected monthly recording hours before relying on a remote service. A one-off allowance is not the same as a monthly recurring allowance, and a finished episode’s length may be shorter than the recording session.
Paying for video you will not publish
If your show is audio-only, prioritize audio recording, tracks, and export rather than video resolution. For video episodes, verify resolution limits and watermark treatment on the plan you will use.

Assuming recording software includes hosting
Recording, editing, hosting, and distribution are separate parts of a podcast workflow. Confirm who manages your RSS feed and how your show reaches the destinations you want.
Exporting without checking the host’s specifications
Before publishing, confirm codec, sample rate, and channel count for your hosting and distribution workflow. Apple accepts MP3 or AAC for RSS audio, but subscriber audio uses distinct specifications.
