An affiliate marketing website is a small publishing operation: it serves a defined audience with useful content, uses approved referral links to earn commissions when eligible purchases occur, and keeps its disclosures, links, and information current. You need a maintained website and a plan for publishing; adding affiliate links alone does not make a site useful or guarantee income.
What do you need to set up an affiliate marketing website?
Start with the reader the site will help and the decisions or tasks they need help with. Then create a place to publish and maintain pages, develop useful content, and apply to relevant affiliate programs. There is no single required platform or technical stack established by the official guidance cited here.

Choose an audience need
Define a subject narrow enough to serve a recognizable audience and identify the questions that audience needs answered. Plan content around helping readers understand, compare, or use something—not around finding a place to insert a referral link. A niche does not guarantee search visibility, traffic, or revenue.

Build a publishing site you can maintain
Your site needs to publish pages and let you update them as facts, products, and program terms change. The sources cited here do not compare website builders, hosting providers, publishing platforms, themes, or plugins, so they cannot establish which option is best or what it costs. Choose based on your own technical needs, budget, and ability to keep the site maintained.

Publish useful content before centering monetization
Affiliate links should support content that serves the reader. For example, a page might explain how to choose an item, describe relevant trade-offs, or walk through a task. Do not present a recommendation as independent if a commercial relationship affects it: disclose that relationship clearly, as described below.
Apply to programs and follow their terms
Each affiliate program sets its own eligibility rules, link formats, and commission conditions. Check the current terms for your country or market before joining, and use only the links and methods the program permits. For Amazon Associates, the operating agreement governs participation and the use of its formatted tagged Special Links; commissions depend on qualifying purchases and program limitations. The agreement page states that it was updated October 15, 2025, so verify the current terms rather than assuming they remain unchanged: Amazon Associates Operating Agreement.
How do affiliate links and disclosures work?
An affiliate link identifies a referral to a merchant or program. If a qualifying purchase occurs, the site may earn a commission under that program’s rules. The possibility of compensation is a material relationship readers should be able to notice when they encounter the recommendation.
Put a clear disclosure near the recommendation
The FTC advises affiliate marketers to disclose their relationship clearly and conspicuously, preferably close to the recommendation. A disclosure far away from a link may not be associated with it by readers. A plain-language example from the FTC is: “I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post.” Adapt the wording to describe your actual relationship, and place it where readers can see it in context. See the FTC’s Endorsement Guides FAQ.
Include Amazon’s required site statement when participating
Amazon Associates says to display this statement: “As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.” Amazon also calls for a clear, conspicuous link-level disclosure near affiliate links or product reviews. The site statement does not replace a disclosure placed where the reader encounters the recommendation. Check Amazon Associates Help for its current instructions.
Qualify affiliate links for Google Search
Google Search Central says affiliate links should use rel="sponsored". For example: View the product. Google has said affiliate monetization is generally acceptable when commercial links are qualified appropriately. The cited Search Central post is dated July 26, 2021; check Google’s current guidance before publishing or changing site-wide link practices: Google Search Central: A reminder on qualifying links and our link spam update.
What ongoing work keeps the site working?
A working affiliate site needs editorial upkeep as well as initial setup. Program terms and product information can change, and links can stop working. Set a review process that fits the size and subject of your site; the cited sources do not establish a required review interval or a particular tool.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Check that links still lead to the intended destination and use the program’s permitted format.
- Review product details and recommendations for accuracy, especially when availability or features may have changed.
- Keep disclosures visible near relevant recommendations and confirm any program-specific statement remains correct.
- Revisit program terms and applicable search guidance when updating your links or monetization practices.
- Update or remove pages that no longer provide accurate, useful help to readers.
What this evidence does—and does not—establish
The official guidance cited above explains important disclosure, program-link, and search-link requirements. It does not establish startup costs, a likely income range, traffic or conversion benchmarks, success rates, or a superior hosting or publishing platform. Do not treat the presence of affiliate links, a particular niche, or a specific technical stack as evidence that a site will earn money. This article focuses on U.S.-oriented guidance; it is not a complete account of legal requirements in other countries.
