Each door reveals that day’s surprise, which might be a picture, treat, short reading, or activity. This household countdown is a convenient convention—not the exact length or start date of the church season of Advent.
How do you open an Advent calendar?
- Find the door or entry marked with the current date.
- Open that door to reveal its picture, treat, reading, or activity.
- Repeat once each day, following the calendar’s own instructions if its format differs.
For the familiar 24-door calendar, open door 1 on December 1 and continue in date order through door 24 on December 24. The National Trust describes this as the common format, not a rule every calendar must follow (National Trust).

Do you start at Day 1 or Day 24?
Start at Day 1, not Day 24, when using the usual calendar numbered 1–24. Open one dated door per day; the point is a daily countdown, rather than opening all the doors at once.

What is behind an Advent calendar door?
It depends on the calendar. Some reveal an image, some contain chocolate or another small treat, and others offer a devotional reading or daily activity. Not every Advent calendar contains chocolate, and the daily reveal can be a simple moment of anticipation rather than a gift.

Is Advent the same as the 24-day calendar countdown?
No. Advent is a Christian season of preparation for Christmas and anticipation of Christ’s Second Coming. In the Roman Catholic General Roman Calendar, it begins with First Vespers of the Sunday on or closest to November 30 and ends before First Vespers of Christmas. The familiar printed calendar instead fixes its countdown to December 1–24 (USCCB: What is Advent?).
The USCCB notes that December 17–24 focuses more directly on preparation for the Nativity; the O Antiphons have been used by the Church since at least the eighth century (USCCB: What is Advent?). Those details illustrate why the religious season is not simply another name for a 24-door calendar. These dates describe Roman Catholic norms; other Christian traditions may explain or observe Advent differently.

Why is it called an Advent calendar?
The name comes from Advent, the Christian season before Christmas. The season looks toward the celebration of Christ’s birth and, in the USCCB’s description of the Roman Catholic calendar, toward Christ’s Second Coming as well (USCCB: What is Advent?).
Where did Advent calendars come from?
Before printed calendars, German Christian households used ways of marking the days before Christmas, including daily marks, candles, or pictures. Heritage and educational accounts commonly trace the development of the modern printed calendar to Germany around the turn of the twentieth century and associate an early design with Gerhardt (also spelled Gerhard) Lang in 1908. These are useful historical guideposts, rather than an undisputed claim that one person invented every form of the custom (National Trust; SPCK).

Does every Advent calendar have 24 doors?
No. Twenty-four dated doors are common, but calendars vary in their number of entries, materials, and contents. Some are disposable paper or cardboard; others are reusable. A calendar may use treats, images, readings, or activities. Choose one whose dates and contents suit the person using it, and follow its instructions if they differ from the familiar December 1–24 pattern.
