Choose a photo that can be cropped vertically, position its subject in the preview so it stays clear of the clock and icons, then apply it to the Lock Screen, Home Screen, or both.
Choose and prepare a photo
Pick an image with a clear subject and enough space around it to accommodate a tall crop. A portrait-oriented photo often needs less adjustment, but a landscape photo can work if you are comfortable cropping its sides. Avoid stretching an image to fill the screen; if cropping would cut off something important, use an editor to create a background or layout around it instead. Keep an original copy before making edits that might be difficult to undo.

There is no single pixel size that suits every phone. Use the device’s wallpaper preview to judge the crop, and place important details where the clock, widgets, and app icons will not cover them. Set a photo as wallpaper on iPhone
- Open Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper.
- Tap Photos and choose the image you want.
- Adjust the image in the preview so the subject is framed clearly. Customize the available Lock Screen elements if you want.
- Tap Add, then choose Set as Wallpaper Pair or Customize Home Screen to set the Home Screen separately.

Set a photo as wallpaper on a Pixel phone
- Touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen.
- Tap Wallpaper & style > Change wallpaper, then choose Lock screen or Home screen.
- Tap Choose a photo and select your image.
- Check the preview and adjust the framing, then apply the wallpaper.

When to use a design editor
For one photo with no added design, the built-in phone settings are usually enough. An editor such as Canva is useful when you want to combine photos, add text, or start from a template. Canva says its wallpaper maker supports uploaded photos, templates, and drag-and-drop editing, and lists apps for iOS and Android. After exporting a design, set it through your phone’s wallpaper settings and use the phone preview to check the crop.

Optional iPhone effect: Spatial Scene
Apple says iPhone 12 and later running iOS 26 can turn some photos into 3D Spatial Scene wallpapers. The effect appears only on the Lock Screen, and not every photo qualifies; Apple says suitable images typically have good lighting, a clear separation between subject and background, or a landscape orientation. Use a changing set of photos
If you would rather see a rotating collection than keep one image fixed, iPhone’s built-in Photo Shuffle is an option in the wallpaper gallery. Choose it when adding a wallpaper and follow the on-screen prompts to select the photos and display behavior.
