For students who do not need Photoshop for a class, team workflow, or career path, Affinity by Canva is the lower-cost place to start: its current individual desktop app is advertised as free with a Canva account. Choose Adobe Photoshop if your course or collaborators require Adobe files or skills, or if you will use the broader Creative Cloud bundle. Compare the renewal price and local terms—not just the first-year offer—before subscribing.
One naming note: the current Affinity offering is a combined app with photo, vector, and layout studios. It is not simply the older, separately sold Affinity Photo product, so older comparisons may describe different pricing or device availability.

How much do the student options cost?
Affinity’s current individual desktop app is listed at $0. A Canva account is required, but the core Pixel, Vector, and Layout tools do not require a paid Canva plan. Canva premium is required for Canva AI tools integrated into Affinity. These are current vendor-stated terms and may change. Affinity’s Get Affinity page explains the free access and app contents; its AI page describes the premium-plan condition.

Photoshop itself is subscription-only according to Adobe’s UK plans page. As one market-specific example, that page lists the standalone Photoshop annual plan billed monthly at £21.98 per month; temporary discounts may also appear. Do not treat that UK figure as a student price elsewhere or convert it into a universal rate. Adobe’s UK plans page shows its current options.
Adobe describes its student offer as 71% off on the US student page. That is Adobe’s promotional comparison, not a universal discount. The student/teacher eligibility FAQ says qualifying students can be aged 13 and older and was last updated 2 April 2026; eligibility depends on the education program and current terms. Check Adobe’s education FAQ before subscribing.

Affinity’s current product materials list RAW development, retouching, tone mapping, lens correction, HDR and focus merging, astrophotography stacking, batch processing, macros, filters, adjustment layers, and unlimited layers. The combined app also includes vector and page-layout studios, custom workspaces, and non-destructive editing. These are vendor-described capabilities, not independent performance results. Photoshop: part of a larger Adobe bundle
The US student Creative Cloud Pro offer includes Photoshop and more than 20 apps, including Lightroom, Illustrator, Premiere, and Acrobat. That breadth may be useful when a course spans photography, illustration, video, and document work; it is less compelling if you only need a photo editor. Adobe’s student page also describes Photoshop access across desktop, web, iPhone, and iPad. Confirm the specific device workflow your classes require at Adobe’s student offer page.
Will Affinity work with Photoshop files?
Affinity’s current desktop app can import layered Photoshop PSD files, but file compatibility is not a guarantee of a perfect round trip. Affinity warns that smart objects and advanced filters may flatten during import, and that exporting from Affinity to Photoshop does not preserve editability. For a graded project or shared class file, open a representative PSD early and check the layers and effects you need. Affinity’s photo-editing FAQ covers PSD import and export behavior.

If an instructor, lab, or project partner requires native Photoshop files or Adobe-specific workflows, using Photoshop can reduce handoff friction. That is a practical workflow consideration, not evidence that every course requires Adobe software. Ask about required file formats and whether the school provides access before paying yourself.
Which devices are supported?
Affinity currently lists its app for Windows and macOS desktop, and says an iPad version is in development. Adobe’s US student page describes Photoshop for desktop, web, iPhone, and iPad. If you work on an iPad or need to move between devices for class, verify that the required features and file workflow are available on the exact platform you plan to use. Affinity’s availability page and Adobe’s offer page state their listed device coverage.

How should a student decide?
- Start with Affinity if your course accepts its files, you use Windows or macOS, and you want substantial photo tools without a software subscription.
- Choose Photoshop if a class, collaborator, internship, or intended career specifically depends on Photoshop or Adobe workflows.
- Consider the Adobe bundle if you will use several included apps, not only Photoshop, and the local price fits your budget after the introductory year.
- Test compatibility first if you expect to edit PSDs with smart objects or advanced filters, or to send editable work back to Photoshop.
- Check your school’s access before buying either option; institution-provided access may change the out-of-pocket comparison.
