Adobe Muse Contact Form: Fixing “The Server Encountered an Error”

A SitePoint user’s Muse form changed from “Form received” without email to a server-error message after an SMTP code change. Here’s what the thread does—and does not—show, and how to diagnose the live PHP handler.

“The server encountered an error” is a generic failure message, not a diagnosis. In the October 2019 SitePoint thread about an Adobe Muse form hosted at GoDaddy and intended to send to Zoho Mail, the error appeared after the poster changed the PHP script to add SMTP code. The thread does not include the changed script, server logs, or a confirmed fix, so it cannot identify the cause. Start by checking the live PHP error log and deployed form-handler files, then confirm with the host which mail transport the account supports.

What the SitePoint thread establishes

The poster first reported that visitors saw “Form received” but no message arrived in the intended mailbox. The site was built with Adobe Muse and hosted at GoDaddy; the recipient address was with Zoho Mail. A later post said the PHP script had been modified to add SMTP code, after which the browser displayed “The server encountered an error.” The poster’s exact report was: “The error is ‘The server encountered an error’”. The code pasted in the thread identifies a generated handler from Adobe Muse CC 2018.1.1.386. It requires form_process.php, calls process_form($form), checks the request and required fields, and then calls PHP’s mail() function. That is the code shown in the forum, not a verified copy of what is currently deployed on any live site. A reply also noted invalid HTML in the posted form markup, but did not establish that as the sole cause.

The changed browser message followed the script modification, but timing alone does not prove the new SMTP code caused it. Without the modified script and corresponding server logs, the failing stage and any remedy remain unconfirmed.

What the error message can—and cannot—tell you

A generic server-error message does not reveal whether the failure is in the browser-side form validation, PHP execution, an included file, SMTP authentication, the host’s mail transport, or another part of the request. It is not a specific PHP or SMTP diagnosis. Use the server’s error evidence to narrow down where the request failed rather than trying another code snippet based on the wording alone.

Diagnose the deployed form before changing code

  1. Reproduce the failure and note its time. Record when you submit the form and the exact message shown. This gives you a time to match against hosting logs.
  2. Check the hosting account’s PHP and web-server error logs. Look for a parse error, fatal error, failed include, permission issue, or other message at the request time. The browser response alone does not name the cause.
  3. Verify the live handler and its files. Confirm that the form posts to the PHP handler you expect and that the deployed handler and form_process.php are in the expected location. Check that the include resolves from the deployed directory; the forum’s pasted code shows that the handler depends on it.
  4. Ask the host which mail transport the account supports. Confirm whether the hosting environment supports PHP’s configured local mail transport, requires authenticated SMTP, and permits outbound connections to the relevant provider. Do not assume a provider hostname can simply be placed into generic PHP settings.
  5. Test delivery separately from form processing. A successful form response and successful handoff to a mail transport do not establish that the recipient mailbox received the message. Check the mail transport’s logs or delivery status, then check recipient-side filtering and routing where available.

Why “Form received” does not prove email delivery

PHP’s official manual explains that mail() returning true means the message was accepted for delivery; it does not confirm arrival in the intended mailbox. The manual puts it plainly: “It is important to note that just because the mail was accepted for delivery, it does NOT mean the mail will actually reach the intended destination.” PHP: mail.

That distinction fits the thread’s initial symptom: a visitor-facing confirmation can appear even though no message is visible in the inbox. Delivery may still depend on the configured transport, routing, provider handling, and filtering. Treat the form’s confirmation and the email’s final delivery as separate outcomes to verify.

Choose a mail transport with the hosting account, not a copied snippet

The PHP configuration manual distinguishes SMTP and smtp_port settings used by PHP on Windows from sendmail_path, commonly used in other server configurations. The applicable setup depends on the server environment. PHP: Runtime Configuration.

Before editing Muse’s generated handler, ask the host whether the account’s PHP setup can use its local mail transport, whether authenticated SMTP is required, and whether outbound connections to the mail provider are allowed. If the provider requires SMTP authentication, confirm the supported implementation and credentials process with the host and provider. The old SitePoint discussion mentions GoDaddy and Zoho, but it does not document their current settings or establish a working configuration for either service.

Related SitePoint discussions from 2014 and 2016 include community suggestions to use PHPMailer and alter Muse’s PHP handler. They are historical suggestions, not a verified drop-in fix for this error or a guarantee of compatibility with current PHP and library versions. The 2019 thread and its linked discussion context do not supply enough evidence to recommend a particular SMTP snippet.

What remains unresolved in the reported case

  • The thread does not show the modified SMTP code or the server log for the failed request, so it cannot identify the exact error or failing line.
  • It does not confirm whether the visible server error came from PHP parsing, a missing include, SMTP authentication, host restrictions, or another cause.
  • It does not document a confirmed resolution or current GoDaddy and Zoho account configuration.

The reliable next step for a site showing this message is to use its own logs and hosting account details to identify the failing stage, then apply the mail setup supported by that host—not to treat the forum’s symptom or old code suggestions as a diagnosis.
