What can you do with Reader?
- Read and search: Open PDF documents and find text within them.
- Print and share: Print a document or share it with others.
- Complete and sign: Fill in PDF forms and sign documents.
- Review and annotate: Add comments, sticky notes, highlights, strikethroughs, and freehand drawings, as listed on Adobe’s product page.
These are core Reader functions; Adobe describes Reader as free and does not require a paid plan for basic viewing, form filling, signing, or annotation. (Adobe Acrobat Reader FAQs; Adobe Acrobat Reader product page)

Can Acrobat Reader edit PDFs?
It depends on what you mean by “edit.” Reader can add markups such as comments and highlights, which change the document by adding review notes. It cannot change existing PDF text or images: Adobe says those editing features require Acrobat Standard or Acrobat Pro. (Adobe Acrobat Reader product page)
| Task | Acrobat Reader | Paid Acrobat plan |
|---|---|---|
| Open, read, search, print, share | Supported | Not needed for these Reader functions |
| Fill forms, sign, add comments and markups | Supported | Not needed for these Reader functions |
| Change existing PDF text or images | Not available | Adobe says this requires Acrobat Standard or Pro |
This distinction is useful when choosing an app: Reader is for reading and routine document tasks, including review markup; editing the underlying content is the point at which Adobe directs users to its paid Acrobat products. Adobe’s pages do not establish a single current price for those plans across countries and billing terms.
