Adobe Acrobat lets you edit text and images in a PDF, reorganize pages, and convert a file to formats such as Word or Excel. For a typo or a small page change, you can often work directly in the PDF; extensive rewriting is usually easier in the original authoring file. The result depends on the PDF’s fonts, layout, scan quality, and editing permissions.
What you can edit in Acrobat
Acrobat’s Edit tool can add, replace, format, or delete text and make changes to images and other objects. Adobe lists corrections such as changing fonts and alignment among the supported tasks. You can also organize pages, including reordering, deleting, or rotating them; Acrobat’s feature information also describes merging and splitting PDFs. Adobe’s text-editing guide and Acrobat features describe these capabilities.

What happens when the PDF is a scan?
A scanned PDF may consist of page images rather than selectable text. Adobe says Acrobat automatically runs optical character recognition (OCR) when a scanned PDF is opened for editing, making text and images editable. OCR recognition can contain errors, so inspect the extracted wording against the scan—especially names, numbers, and language where exact phrasing matters—before relying on changes. See Adobe’s explanation of editing scanned PDFs.

Text stays within its own box
Text boxes are independent: text can reflow within the selected box, but extra text does not automatically push a neighboring box down or continue onto another page. If a change requires substantial rewriting or affects multiple pages, edit the source document or export the PDF to an authoring format instead of expecting a full-page word processor to emerge from a local correction.

Font availability affects existing text
Adobe says Acrobat needs the font installed on the system to edit existing text normally. If a font is embedded in the PDF but not installed, editing is limited to changing color or size. If the font is neither installed nor embedded, that text cannot be edited. These restrictions are described in Adobe’s text-editing help.
Security and form type can block changes
Document permissions may prohibit editing, and signed PDFs can be locked against changes. Security settings can also restrict printing or copying. Acrobat’s documentation further warns that XFA forms created in LiveCycle Designer cannot be edited in Acrobat without losing interactivity. Check the PDF’s security settings and form type before assuming the Edit tool is broken. Adobe discusses these constraints in its PDF editing guidance.
When exporting is the better route
Acrobat can export PDFs to formats including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and image formats. Exporting can make sense when a document needs extensive revisions in its original kind of application, rather than a few direct PDF corrections. Review the converted file carefully: the cited feature pages establish export availability, not that every conversion preserves the original layout perfectly or that every feature is available on every plan or platform. Adobe lists conversion in its feature overview and desktop overview.
