The setting to adjust is usually Sleep Time, which controls how long the printer waits before entering Sleep Mode or power-saving mode. Menu names and options vary by model, so use the online guide for your printer’s full model number rather than relying on a button sequence intended for another device.
Can you turn off Deep Sleep Mode?
Brother describes Deep Sleep as an automatic state the printer may enter after it has been in Sleep Mode without receiving a job. The delay depends on the model and its settings. Brother’s support FAQ for the MFC-8510DN, MFC-8710DW, MFC-8810DW, and MFC-8910DW says Deep Sleep cannot be turned off, but Sleep Time can be adjusted (Brother support FAQ, November 15, 2012). Guides for several newer HL and DCP families also say Deep Sleep cannot be disabled due to environmental considerations (Brother HL-L2400D/L2405W/L2420DW/L2460DW family guide).

What Sleep Time changes—and what it does not
Sleep Time sets the interval before the printer enters Sleep Mode or power-saving mode. On some models, the setting is under general or machine settings; on others, it appears in an Ecology menu or a similarly named group. Brother’s settings tables describe Sleep Time and, on some models, a separate Auto Power Off option (Brother settings table for selected HL models).

Changing Sleep Time does not disable Deep Sleep. It changes the idle timing; Deep Sleep may still follow Sleep Mode automatically on the cited models.
How to adjust Sleep Time on your Brother printer
- Find the full model number. Check the printer’s front, rear label, or status/settings page.
- Open the model-specific manual. Go to Brother’s support site, select the exact model and region, and open its Online User’s Guide.
- Find Sleep Time in the guide. Look under Machine Settings or General Settings; some models place it under Ecology or a similarly named menu.
- Follow that model’s control-panel instructions. Select the Sleep Time value you want, then confirm or save if prompted. Available values and menu paths depend on the model.
- Test the behavior. Let the printer idle, then send a print job or use the wake control documented for your model.
If the printer powers off after Deep Sleep
Some Brother models have a separate Auto Power Off setting. It controls whether the machine turns off after remaining in Deep Sleep for a set period; it is not a switch for disabling Deep Sleep. Check your model’s settings table or manual to see whether this option exists and how to change it (Brother settings table for selected HL models).

How to wake a Brother printer from Deep Sleep
Wake behavior differs across models. Brother’s cited guidance lists receiving a print job or interacting with the control panel as wake events; its MFC FAQ also lists fax reception and copying. Check the Online User’s Guide for the controls and wake events supported by your printer (Brother support FAQ; Brother HL family guide).
Choosing a Sleep Time
A shorter Sleep Time means the printer enters its power-saving state sooner after inactivity; a longer interval can keep it ready for use for longer before that happens. Choose a value that suits how quickly you need it available and how often it sits idle. Brother states that Deep Sleep uses less power than Sleep Mode in the cited guide, but the sources do not provide a measured wattage difference or a universal wake-time figure (Brother HL family guide).
