Google Calendar has no universal “add category” button. To create reusable categories such as Work, Family, or Appointments, make a separate calendar for each one, give it a color, and choose that calendar when you create an event. You must create new calendars in a computer browser; afterward, you can use them in the Calendar app.
How to create a calendar for each category
-
Open Google Calendar in a computer browser.
-
In the left panel, next to Other calendars, click Add other calendars, then choose Create new calendar.

When making an event, use the calendar selector to choose the category calendar before saving. Google’s event instructions explain how to create and assign events.
For example, create separate calendars called Work, Personal, and Appointments. An event saved to Work belongs to that calendar, so its color and visibility follow that calendar. This is a reusable way to organize events, not just a visual label applied to one entry.
Which kind of category do you need?
| Method | Where it applies | Reusable for future events? | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Separate calendar | Events saved to that calendar | Yes; choose it when creating each event | Create in a computer browser; then use in the browser or Calendar app |
| Calendar color | Events on the selected calendar | Yes, for events on that calendar | Color options are available from the calendar’s Options menu |
| Individual event color | One event | No; it does not create a reusable category | On a computer, right-click the event and choose a color |
| Time Insights label | Calendar entries tracked in Time Insights | Yes, as a label for tracking | Work or school account, computer, and required permissions; an administrator may disable Time Insights |
Use an event color for a one-off distinction
If you only need to make one event stand out, Google lets you change that event’s color on a computer: right-click the event and choose a color. This changes the appearance of that event; it does not create a category you can select for later events. For recurring organization, a separate calendar is the more reusable option. See Google’s event help.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse Time Insights labels if your account supports them
Time Insights labels are for tracking calendar entries, not a general category control available to every personal account. On a computer, open an event, choose Edit, then select the current color next to the calendar name to create or assign a label. Labels can also be managed from the Time Insights panel. Google says you can create up to 200 labels; the help page does not state a publication year for that limit. Availability depends on a work or school account and relevant permissions, and an administrator may have disabled the feature. Details are in Google’s Time Insights label instructions.

What about tasks?
Google documents task lists and changing task color, but its task instructions do not establish that separate lists can each be assigned their own color as custom event categories. A Google Calendar Community discussion has conflicting replies, so do not rely on list-specific colors as a confirmed feature. For task-list setup and color options, see Google’s task instructions.

Google states, “You can only create new calendars from a browser.” Create the calendar in a computer browser first; Google says it will then be available in the browser and Calendar app. If you were looking for colored categories in the Android app, distinguish a reusable calendar from a one-event color change: only the separate calendar acts as a category you can select for future events. Google’s Android category question and colored-category discussion reflect this common point of confusion.
