Add a Local LLM Cleanup Step to Speech-to-Text Dictation

A local LLM can clean up a speech-recognition transcript before you insert it. Learn how the two stages fit together, what to check for local processing, and how to review changes safely.

To enhance speech-to-text dictation with a local LLM, run speech recognition first, pass its transcript—not necessarily the audio—to a locally running language model for optional cleanup, then review and insert the result. Speech recognition turns microphone audio into words; the LLM can adjust punctuation, remove obvious verbal fillers, or format text. Because an LLM can also change names, numbers, code, or meaning, treat its output as a draft.

How the two-stage dictation workflow works

  1. Capture speech. Use a microphone and a recording control such as push-to-talk.
  2. Transcribe locally. A speech-recognition runtime processes the audio and produces a transcript. The whisper.cpp project documents command-line transcription and microphone streaming, as well as support for multiple platforms.
  3. Refine the text if needed. Send the transcript to a local LLM with a narrowly scoped instruction—for example, correct punctuation and remove obvious fillers while preserving the speaker’s words and meaning. A community macOS project documents optional Ollama-based cleanup and numbered-list formatting.
  4. Review, then insert. Check the revised text against what you meant to say before pasting or inserting it into the target app. Some desktop dictation wrappers handle recording controls and cursor insertion for you.

Illustrative example: you dictate a rough sentence with a few pauses; the recognizer produces the words; the LLM adds punctuation and removes an obvious “um.” This describes the intended workflow, not tested performance or a guarantee that the model will preserve every word.

Choose between a desktop wrapper and assembling components

Approach What it can provide Trade-offs to check
Desktop dictation wrapper A single interface may combine hotkeys, audio capture, transcription, optional cleanup, settings, and insertion. The community local-whisper project documents an integrated macOS workflow with optional Ollama processing. Confirm supported operating systems, how the app selects its transcription and LLM endpoints, and what it does with audio and text. Project README statements are not independent security audits.
Build from separate components A runtime such as whisper.cpp gives you a lower-level transcription building block, with documented command-line, microphone-streaming, and acceleration options. You can connect it to a separately configured local LLM. You must arrange recording controls, handoff between stages, settings, and text insertion yourself. Performance depends on the machine, model, and configuration; the documentation does not establish a universal setup or ranking.

Compare transcription options using your own language, accent, names, and specialist vocabulary. Consider recognition quality, response time on your hardware, model download and storage size, and available acceleration. The available documentation does not establish a universally best model or a minimum hardware requirement.

Check that the LLM is actually running locally

Ollama supports local model execution, but it also offers cloud-hosted models. Its privacy policy, dated March 2026, says: “We do not collect, store, transmit, or have access to your prompts, responses, model interactions, or other content you process locally.” That statement applies to content processed locally; it is not a blanket claim about cloud inference or every application that connects to Ollama.

Ollama’s cloud model documentation says cloud models use inference compute on ollama.com and require sign-in. Before dictating sensitive material, check the model name, endpoint settings, and whether the app makes network requests. Also consider the full path: model downloads, app updates, logs, telemetry, and any configured service can affect what leaves the device. A project’s privacy description is a claim by that project, not an independent audit.

Keep refinement useful without letting it rewrite your meaning

Start with a small instruction that limits the model’s role: fix punctuation and capitalization, remove only obvious verbal fillers, and preserve wording, names, numbers, and meaning. If you want a numbered list or another format, ask for that explicitly. Compare refinement off and on using representative, non-sensitive dictation before relying on it for consequential text.

  • Read meaning-sensitive passages against your intent. A fluent rewrite can still be wrong.
  • For specialist vocabulary, custom vocabulary or prompting may help the recognition stage, but the cited project documentation does not quantify an accuracy gain.

The local-whisper project documents options to skip or adjust text processing for terminals and code editors. That is a project-specific feature, not behavior to assume in every dictation app.

What you need—and what is optional

You need a microphone input and software that can capture audio and run or connect to speech recognition. A built-in microphone may be enough to try the workflow; the documentation does not show that a dedicated USB microphone is required or that a particular microphone improves transcription. If your current input is unsuitable, a USB microphone is one possible category to consider, but no specific model has been tested here and an external mic does not guarantee better recognition.

Supports major platforms (Zoom, Teams, Skype) and recording apps. Quick Tip: If your device is not detected, please check your computer's privacy settings to allow microphone access for the app you're using

Local model workflows involve downloading model files, and file sizes vary. The cited materials do not establish a minimum amount of storage, memory, or processing power for this complete dictation pipeline, so avoid treating any one hardware specification as a requirement. whisper.cpp documents CPU, GPU, and other acceleration routes; actual speed depends on the model, hardware, and configuration.

Alternative transcription route

LocalAI’s audio-to-text documentation describes another software route for transcription. It can be considered when assembling a workflow, but the cited documentation does not establish a comparative quality or speed advantage over whisper.cpp for your machine or vocabulary. The same separation still applies: transcribe first, then optionally refine the resulting text.
