To add an existing Gmail account on a Samsung Galaxy phone, open Settings > Accounts and backup > Add account > Google, then enter your Google account details and follow the prompts. Menu names can vary by Galaxy model and software version, but this is Samsung’s documented route.
How to add your Gmail account
- Open Settings on your Galaxy phone.
- Tap Accounts and backup.
- Tap Add account, then choose Google.
- Enter the email address for your existing Google account and follow the sign-in prompts.
Samsung documents this route in its Galaxy account guide. If the labels on your phone differ, Google’s Android instructions describe the account area as Passwords & accounts, or, on some devices, Users & accounts or Manage accounts. See Google’s Android account instructions.

What adding the account syncs
Adding a Google account gives the phone access to Gmail and other Google services. Google says associated information such as email, contacts and calendar events is added to the device automatically. This is Google account sync; it does not mean every kind of data on the phone is backed up or synced.
Check Gmail’s own sync setting
Device-level Google account sync and Gmail’s message sync are related but separate controls. If the account is on the phone but new messages are not appearing, check Gmail’s setting:

- Open the Gmail app.
- Tap Menu, then Settings.
- Select the account you added.
- Under Data usage, make sure Sync Gmail is checked.

If Gmail is not receiving new messages
Work through the basic checks before removing the account or clearing app data:

- Confirm the phone has an internet connection.
- Update Gmail, then restart the phone if messages still do not appear.
- Verify that Sync Gmail is enabled for the relevant account.
- Pull down in Gmail to refresh. Google says syncing can take up to 15 minutes and may take longer if the device has not been used for some time.
- Check the storage available to your Google account. Gmail, Google Photos and Google Drive share that storage; when the account reaches its limit, Gmail cannot send or receive messages.
If the issue affects other Google data too, check device-level account sync. On Samsung’s documented route, go to Settings > Accounts and backup > Manage accounts, select the Google account, tap Sync account, and try Sync now. Also confirm Auto sync data is enabled. You can also try signing in to the account in a web browser. If sign-in fails there too, the problem may be account access rather than the phone. If the preceding checks do not help, Samsung’s troubleshooting flow suggests removing and adding the account again; have the account email and password ready before doing so.

What account removal does—and does not do
Removing a Google account from this phone removes its associated email, contacts and settings from the device. It is not the same as permanently deleting the Google account, and Samsung says the account can be added to the phone again. Make sure you can sign in before removing it. Keep Calendar sync separate from Gmail troubleshooting
If you also sync Google Calendar, treat its sync settings carefully. Samsung warns that incorrectly configured Calendar sync may delete events and that the most recently changed data is used during sync. This warning concerns Calendar synchronization; it is not an expected consequence of simply adding a Gmail account. See Samsung’s Google Calendar sync guidance.

Use clearing Gmail storage only as a last resort
Google advises trying other troubleshooting steps before clearing Gmail app storage. Clearing it can erase local drafts, your signature, ringtone and other app settings. Do not use it as an early fix for a newly added account; consult Google’s Gmail sync troubleshooting guide if you reach this step.
