Publish each playlist as an atomic snapshot, and coordinate origin retention with CDN caching. A scrubber 404 usually means one part of that lifecycle moved ahead of another: the player still has a playlist entry for a segment that is no longer available.
What needs to stay in sync for a DVR seek to work?
A live HLS DVR window is the rolling range of media that clients can discover and play by loading the media playlist. The playlist describes which segments are available; the origin and any delivery caches must keep those segments fetchable for clients that have a copy of a slightly older playlist.

That makes DVR an availability lifecycle, not just a playlist-length setting. For every segment, coordinate three events: when it is removed from newly published playlists, when it becomes unavailable at the origin, and when it expires or is purged from caches. A client seeking backward can fail if any playlist it is still using points to a segment that has already been deleted or become unreachable.

How should the rolling playlist advance?
Evict only from the front
For a mutable live playlist, append new segments and remove only the oldest entries, in playlist order. Keep a continuous, non-decreasing media-sequence number for that playlist. When removing entries, increase EXT-X-MEDIA-SEQUENCE by exactly the number of media segments removed; do not reset, decrease, or wrap it. These are the live-playlist update rules in RFC 8216, Section 6.2.2 (August 2017).

For example, this illustrative update removes three leading segments. The next playlist begins at sequence 123, not 120:
# Previous playlist
#EXT-X-MEDIA-SEQUENCE:120
#EXTINF:6.0,
seg120.ts
#EXTINF:6.0,
seg121.ts
#EXTINF:6.0,
seg122.ts
#EXTINF:6.0,
seg123.ts
# Updated playlist after removing the first three segments
#EXT-X-MEDIA-SEQUENCE:123
#EXTINF:6.0,
seg123.ts
The durations and names in this example are illustrative, not prescribed values. The important relationship is that the sequence number advances by the count of removed media segments.
Keep discontinuity numbering stable
If a playlist contains EXT-X-DISCONTINUITY tags and you remove old entries that include those tags, maintain EXT-X-DISCONTINUITY-SEQUENCE. Increment it when old discontinuity tags are removed so the sequence numbers of discontinuities still present in the playlist do not change. RFC 8216 Section 6.2.2 specifies this requirement.

How long must removed segments remain available?
Do not delete a segment as soon as it disappears from the newest playlist. Under RFC 8216 Section 6.2.2, a removed segment must remain available for a period equal to its own duration plus the duration of the longest playlist distributed that contained it. This gives clients holding an older playlist time to request the segment after it has rolled out of the latest one.
Apply that retention rule to the actual deletion point, not just the playlist generator’s update schedule. In practice, account for how long a playlist can remain in circulation because of reload intervals, delivery caching, or other deployment-specific delays when planning physical deletion. Keep each segment retrievable from the origin or a valid cache for the full required period.
Coordinate origin retention and CDN behavior
- Track the last playlist publication that referenced each segment and the duration of the longest such playlist.
- Ensure origin deletion does not make a segment unavailable while a client may still hold a playlist that names it.
- Check CDN freshness, cache keys, authorization, and purge behavior for the actual deployment; these details depend on the platform and configuration.
- RFC 8216 recommends using HTTP
Expiresto reflect the planned segment time-to-live when a server intends to remove segments after HTTP delivery.
A cached playlist and a segment object have separate lifetimes. Test the path a viewer uses, not only whether the origin can serve a segment immediately after it is published.

What playlist rules prevent stalls and inconsistent updates?
Publish only complete, atomic snapshots
RFC 8216 Section 6.2.1 says playlist changes must be atomic from the client’s point of view, or playback errors may occur. Generate and publish a coherent new playlist only after every segment it references is downloadable. A client must not receive a playlist that exposes a segment URI before that segment is available for immediate download.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Preserve the live-playlist duration floor
For a live playlist without EXT-X-ENDLIST, removing a segment must not leave the playlist with a total duration below three times its target duration; RFC 8216 Section 6.2.2 warns that falling below this floor can cause playback stalls. The target duration is not the desired DVR-window length: it constrains segment durations under the RFC’s rounding rule (Section 4.3.3.1). Choose the DVR window in media time, independently of that constraint.
Use accurate segment durations
Apple’s Live Playlist (sliding window) construction guide recommends floating-point values for EXTINF durations to reduce seek round-off errors. Use timing that reflects the actual media and keep renditions aligned; inaccurate duration metadata can make the displayed seek position differ from the segment a player requests.

Is a rolling playlist different from an EVENT playlist?
| Playlist approach | How it changes | Fit for a rolling DVR window |
|---|---|---|
| Sliding live playlist | New segments are appended and the oldest entries are removed in order, with media-sequence numbering advanced accordingly. | Fits a bounded rolling window, provided removed segments remain available for clients holding older playlists. |
EVENT playlist |
RFC 8216 says entries may only be appended; existing parts may not be deleted. | Does not provide the mutable rolling-window behavior described here. |
Choose based on the required playlist behavior, not just the label “live.” An append-only EVENT playlist and a bounded sliding playlist have different update rules.
Does a scrubber need an I-frame playlist?
Ordinary segment seeking and trick-play previews are related but not identical. RFC 8216 describes I-frame playlists as useful for trick play, including fast forward, reverse, and scrubbing. Apple’s HLS authoring specification for Apple devices says I-frame playlists must be provided to support scrubbing and scanning UI. That is Apple authoring guidance, not a universal claim that every HLS player requires a separate I-frame playlist to seek.

The appropriate density depends on the desired preview responsiveness and encoding trade-offs.

How should you test the DVR boundary?
Validate the published playlist, the segment objects, and the real CDN-to-player path together. In particular, exercise cases where a client’s playlist is older than the newest origin version.
- Seek to the oldest point advertised by the current playlist and verify that the referenced media segment downloads successfully.
- Test just inside and just outside the retention boundary, including after playlist refreshes.
- Repeat across renditions and through any discontinuity, checking that sequence alignment and discontinuity numbering remain coherent.
- Inspect the same segment URI at the CDN and origin. Record whether a failure is a 404, 410, authorization response, or another delivery error.
- For trick-play UI, check that I-frame playlist coverage matches the available media time range and that preview requests resolve.
Monitor playlist start and end media-sequence values, total listed duration, the oldest segment referenced by recently distributed playlists, origin availability, CDN expiry, and 404/410 rates by URI, rendition, and response path. These signals help distinguish a playlist sequencing defect from premature deletion or a cache and authorization problem.
Which specifications define these behaviors?
The concrete playlist update, retention, availability, and duration-floor rules above come from RFC 8216, HTTP Live Streaming, edited by Roger Pantos and William May and published in August 2017. It is an informational RFC describing HLS protocol version 7. Apple’s live-playlist construction guide and HLS authoring specification provide the timing and Apple-device I-frame guidance described here.
A second-edition HLS Internet-Draft revision 21 was dated March 2026 in the available source material, and Apple’s 2026 HLS update points readers to the evolving draft. It is a draft, not a finalized replacement RFC; check its latest revision before relying on newer tags or behaviors.
