The ADATA URBAN TAPSAFE combines phone-based NFC unlocking with a built-in clip, but its headline speed is not a reliable guide to large, sustained transfers. ADATA rates it for up to 1,900 MB/s sequential reads and writes; independent reviews found that short tests could approach that range while long writes slowed sharply. Its access controls may suit convenient everyday use, but the password-recovery warning and lack of a fit for high-security requirements are important buying considerations.
What the URBAN TAPSAFE offers
The URBAN TAPSAFE is a portable external SSD with a clip-style mounting design and app-mediated NFC access. ADATA specifies a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 interface (20Gbps), capacities of 500GB, 1TB and 2TB, and sequential read and write speeds of up to 1,900 MB/s. Those are manufacturer maximum specifications, not a promise that every computer, cable, workload or transfer will reach them; ADATA says performance varies with hardware and software. ADATA’s product page provides the specifications and compatibility details.

Its defining trade-off is clear: NFC access and a useful physical design make the drive distinctive, but performance under large sustained writes is substantially less impressive than the peak rating suggests.
How fast is it in real workloads?
Short benchmark runs and long writes tell different stories. The available reviews tested different capacities and workloads, so their figures should be read as specific test results rather than universal speeds.

| Review and sample | Test | Reported result |
|---|---|---|
| PCWorld, 1TB sample | CrystalDiskMark with 4GiB and 8GiB data sets | Reached the advertised 1.9GB/s range; reads varied with larger data sets. |
| PCWorld, 1TB sample | 450GB write | After about 260GB, write speed fell to approximately 150–200MB/s. |
| Tom’s Hardware, 2TB sample | 15-minute sustained write test | About 1,800–1,900 MB/s for five minutes, then roughly 250 MB/s, and below 70 MB/s near the test’s end. |
These results show why the advertised maximum can be relevant for brief transfers without describing how the drive behaves when writing a large volume of data. A 1TB PCWorld sample and a separate 2TB Tom’s Hardware sample both showed substantial slowdowns during longer writes, but their test conditions and capacities differ. Read the complete results in PCWorld’s review by Jon L. Jacobi and Tom’s Hardware’s review.
PCWorld contributor Jon L. Jacobi summed up the short-workload caveat this way: “The downside is that it’s not a very good performer for 20Gbps with anything but small data sets.” That is the reviewer’s assessment, not a manufacturer specification.

What this means for your setup
- Short transfers: A compatible 20Gbps host connection can help the drive reach its rated range in suitable short tests.
- Large writes: Moving hundreds of gigabytes may take much longer once the sustained-write slowdown appears.
- Host connection: A slower port can constrain throughput. The drive’s 20Gbps interface does not make a computer’s USB connection faster, and ADATA notes results vary by hardware and software.
How NFC unlocking and access control work
To access the drive, use the URBAN TAPSAFE app on a compatible phone and NFC to unlock it. ADATA says the drive locks again when disconnected. The manufacturer describes the interaction as: “Just tap your phone to the device to unlock and access your data instantly.” That describes the access flow; it does not establish a particular encryption standard or independently demonstrate security strength.
ADATA says owners can authorize up to nine members and assign writable or read-only permissions. That can be useful when a drive is shared, but the control is access management—not evidence that the product meets a particular hardware-encryption or high-security standard. Tom’s Hardware cautions that it is not a good fit for needs requiring hardware encryption or high-level data security.

- Now there is no reason to shy away from the higher cost of the USB 3.0 interface. The DashDrive UV150 brings the convenience and speed of premium USB drives to budget-minded consumers.
- A handy Snap-On cap design keeps the drive cap safe and snug on the rear of the device, preventing the cap from disappearing, as well as looking pretty cool.
Protect the password
ADATA’s app guide warns that the user-set password is the only password that can unlock the device. It is also required when adding the drive to a new phone. ADATA says forgotten credentials mean the data cannot be recovered. Treat the password as essential to retaining access, not as a setting that can be reset through a recovery password. See ADATA’s support materials for the app guidance.
If a computer or phone does not recognize it
ADATA’s FAQ says a locked URBAN TAPSAFE is not recognized by the system. If it does not appear, check its lock state and unlock it with the app before treating the issue as a connection or compatibility failure. The same FAQ advises checking mobile-device compatibility and available power for phone use. ADATA’s product FAQ addresses recognition and compatibility.

Who should consider the URBAN TAPSAFE?
- Consider it if you value a clip-style portable drive, app-based NFC unlocking and the ability to give multiple people different access permissions, and your typical transfers are not long, heavy writes.
- Look elsewhere if your work regularly involves writing hundreds of gigabytes at a time, you need dependable high sustained throughput, or your security requirements specifically call for hardware encryption or high-level data security.
Before comparing it with another SSD, check the host port and cable bandwidth, the capacity and price for the exact model, the performance under sustained writes, the security approach you require, and whether the physical mounting design is useful to you. The peak sequential rating alone does not answer those questions.
