Adam Neumann Says a Half-Hour Car Ride With Masayoshi Son Changed WeWork’s Course

Adam Neumann says a half-hour conversation with Masayoshi Son changed his priorities at WeWork. The story is revealing, but it is not a complete explanation of the company’s failure.

Adam Neumann says a roughly half-hour conversation with SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son changed what he wanted from WeWork: instead of focusing on the company’s mission and a measured path toward profitability, he became caught up in the scale of the money on offer. In his retrospective account, that is when his ego took over. It is not proof that the car ride alone caused WeWork’s later collapse.

What Neumann says happened in the car

In a September 2026 interview with Steven Bartlett, as recounted by Fortune on October 5, 2026, Neumann said WeWork’s board had agreed the night before his meeting with Son that he would raise $300 million to $400 million, slow the company’s expansion, move toward profitability and take it public.

Son reportedly had only 12 minutes for an office visit, then invited Neumann to continue talking in his car. Neumann recalled the meeting and ride lasting about half an hour. He said Son offered “$4.2 to be exact” billion, and that they signed terms on an iPad. Fortune reports that SoftBank’s investment, announced the following year, ultimately totaled $4.4 billion.

Neumann described the shift as a change in his own priorities. Fortune quoted him saying that the person who got into the car was a mission-driven entrepreneur who believed in helping people “make a life and not just a living.” He said the offer kept growing in his mind, and that by the time he returned to WeWork headquarters, “It suddenly became about the money.” These are Neumann’s retrospective words as reported by Fortune, not an independently established account of what caused the company’s later failure.

Why the deal figures need context

The $4.2 billion figure is the amount Neumann says Son offered during their conversation. Fortune’s $4.4 billion figure describes the eventual investment total. An earlier WIRED account described a package of $3 billion invested in WeWork and $1.4 billion in three regional companies, and said the deal set a valuation of up to $20 billion at that stage. Those figures describe different points and components of the deal.

WeWork’s often-cited $47 billion valuation was a later private-market peak, not the price investors ultimately paid for a profitable public company. It should not be read as evidence that the business model was sound or that the company’s value remained there. The gap between that peak and WeWork’s subsequent troubles is one reason the car story is compelling, but it does not make the conversation a sufficient explanation of the collapse.

What went wrong beyond one conversation

A mismatch between leases and customer commitments

WeWork leased buildings on long-term commitments and sold workspace to members on shorter terms. That can work when demand and market rents hold up, but it leaves the operator exposed if members leave or rents fall while the lease obligations remain. WIRED’s reporting quotes IWG CEO Mark Dixon describing how falling rents could leave a coworking company paying more under its leases than space was worth in the market.

That structural exposure mattered independently of Neumann’s state of mind. Growth could bring more locations and revenue opportunities, but it also meant taking on obligations that were difficult to unwind if demand weakened. The model’s risks depended on operating conditions and lease commitments, not just on a founder’s personal decisions.

Governance, financing and public-market scrutiny

WeWork attempted an IPO in 2019, and Neumann left as CEO that year. The company later filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in November 2023, with Fortune reporting nearly $19 billion in debt alongside the filing. WeWork emerged from bankruptcy in 2024. These milestones reflect a longer arc involving governance, financing and business performance; none can be reduced to a single meeting.

Neumann’s current comments about fulfilment and success are his own explanation of how he views the episode now. They do not establish that his behavior changed, nor do they show that his later company, Flow, will avoid the risks WeWork faced.

How to read the “ego took over” claim

The half-hour ride is best understood as a personal turning point in Neumann’s account: a moment when an enormous offer displaced, in his telling, the priorities he had held the previous night. The scale of the offer—and his description of signing terms in the car—helps explain why the episode stands out.

But “WeWork’s collapse began there” is narrative framing, not a demonstrated causal finding. Neumann is describing his own hindsight. WeWork’s eventual failure also involved the economics of long-term leases, the company’s governance and financing, and the operating conditions it encountered. Treating the car ride as the whole explanation would confuse a memorable decision point with the causes of a complex corporate collapse.
