Cardano (ADA) staking is non-custodial delegation: you assign your stake to a pool without sending the pool your ADA. Your coins remain in your wallet and spendable, and you can change pools. Rewards are variable rather than guaranteed; Cardano says a first payout typically takes about 15 to 20 days if the pool produces blocks.
What ADA staking does—and whether your coins are locked
On Cardano, staking means registering a stake key and delegating the stake associated with it to a stake pool. The delegation certificate gives the pool a role in producing blocks with that stake; it does not transfer ownership or give the operator control over your funds. Cardano describes delegation as leaving ADA in your wallet, where it remains spendable. You may spend it or change your delegation at any time. See Cardano’s staking guide and delegation documentation.

There is no staking lock-up, but getting started has costs. The first stake-key registration requires a refundable deposit; Cardano’s developer staking guide currently specifies 2 ADA. The delegation transaction also incurs a network fee. The deposit amount is a protocol parameter and may change, so check the current value in the developer staking guide before delegating.

How pool rewards work
Delegation makes your stake count toward a pool, but rewards depend on what happens on the network. A pool must produce blocks to earn rewards. Pool performance, its fixed costs and margin, pledge, saturation, and protocol parameters all affect what delegators receive. The protocol calculates pool rewards; the pool’s declared costs and margin are deducted before the remaining amount is distributed among delegators. Your actual reward can therefore vary from epoch to epoch. Cardano’s rewards documentation explains the factors, and its pool-operation guide describes pool terms.

There is no fixed or guaranteed APY. A pool’s past performance does not guarantee future results, and a calculator estimate is not a forecast. Rewards compound automatically when earned, according to Cardano’s staking guidance.
When rewards start and how switching pools works
Cardano says the first reward typically arrives about 15 to 20 days after delegation, provided the pool produces blocks. This is an operational estimate from Cardano, not a guaranteed payout date. Cardano epochs are approximately five days long. The initial sequence is a delegation, a stake snapshot, activation after an epoch transition, reward calculation, and then payment. Subsequent rewards are calculated on epoch cycles if earned. Details are in the staking guide and developer staking guide.

You can delegate to a different pool at any time, but the new pool does not become active in the current snapshot immediately. Cardano says the former pool can still earn rewards for three additional payouts after a switch; the new pool takes over on the fourth. Account for this epoch delay when moving delegations.
How to compare stake pools
Do not choose a pool by a headline yield alone. Review the pool’s recent block production and stated terms, then consider how much variability you can tolerate. Cardano identifies these factors as relevant to rewards:

- Quality materials: these steel crypto wallets are made of 304 stainless steel with a melting point of over 2500 Fahrenheit degrees, designed and tested to be preservative, fireproof, waterproof, and impact-resistant, and can serve you for a long time
- Products quantity: you will receive a 2-in-1 set of steel bitcoin wallets with matching lock screws, and 1 piece of metal plate marking pen, which is a matching set to help you protect your codes, passwords, and further importantly, your cryptocurrency
- Functions: with these steel crypto wallets you can record information such as fieldworks passphrase in tandem with the BIP39 word list, and they are also compatible with 12 or 24-word seed in most languages, suitable to store your private cryptocurrency information or for many instances where you may need a private cold storage system
- Suitable size: the cold wallet backups are compatible with BIP39 wallets, can work with most hardware wallets, supports up to 24 mnemonics seed phrases, convenient for you to use in coordination with other crypto seed storage devices and wallets
- Multiple ways of locking: you can use the matching screws to lock up the steel bitcoin wallets; You can also lock them up and hide them in other places if you still feel unsafe; The hole on the bitcoin wallet measures 6 mm/ 0.24 inch in diameter, suitable for hanging
- Performance: Check how many blocks the pool was assigned and produced. A missed block means less reward for that epoch.
- Fixed cost and margin: These are pool charges deducted before rewards are distributed to delegators. Understand both rather than comparing margin alone.
- Pledge: This is the operator’s declared stake commitment and can affect pool desirability and reward calculations. It is a signal, not a promise of performance.
- Saturation: Stake beyond the protocol’s saturation threshold has diminishing reward efficiency per ADA. Check the pool’s current saturation rather than assuming its status is permanent.
- Consistency and purpose: Smaller pools may mint blocks less often, creating more epoch-to-epoch variation. If a pool advertises a community or charitable mission, treat that as an operator claim to verify independently.
Which wallet should you use?
Wallet choice is a trade-off among convenience, local verification, and protection of signing keys. A wallet does not itself guarantee returns; it is the interface used to manage your ADA and delegation. Cardano’s wallet types guide describes the broad options:
| Wallet type | What it offers | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Light wallet | Fast access without downloading and validating the entire chain locally. | Relies on hosted services for chain data. |
| Full-node wallet (Daedalus) | Downloads the chain and validates transaction history locally. | Resource-intensive and slower to set up. |
| Hardware wallet | Keeps signing keys offline and pairs with companion wallet software. | Can be lost or damaged; support varies by device, wallet software, and transaction feature. |
Cardano lists Trezor Model T, Ledger Nano S Plus, and Ledger Nano X as ADA hardware-wallet options. Compatibility and support for pool delegation or governance features can vary by wallet software and change over time. Check Cardano’s wallet feature directory and the wallet provider’s current documentation before choosing a device. The directory defines staking support as the ability to delegate ADA from within the wallet, and hardware-wallet support as pairing a Ledger or Trezor.

Vote delegation and withdrawing rewards
Under Cardano’s current guidance, a stake key needs an active vote delegation before staking rewards can be withdrawn. Cardano says holders can delegate to a DRep or choose abstain or no confidence. Rewards may accrue before withdrawals are enabled. Review the current instructions in Cardano’s staking guide and getting-started guide when setting up the wallet.

Before you delegate
- Choose a wallet that supports both stake-pool delegation and the governance action you intend to use.
- Compare pool performance, fixed cost, margin, pledge, and current saturation—not an advertised yield in isolation.
- Keep enough ADA available for the transaction fee and, if registering a stake key for the first time, the refundable deposit.
- Allow roughly 15 to 20 days for a typical first reward, while recognizing that rewards depend on pool block production and are not guaranteed.
