MongoDB Write Concern: Acknowledgments, Journaling, and Failover

MongoDB write concern controls when a write is acknowledged—not whether it can ever be lost. Learn how w, j, and wtimeout affect durability, rollback, and reads.

MongoDB write concern sets the acknowledgment threshold for a write; it does not promise that a write can never be lost. w determines which members must acknowledge, j can require journal persistence, and wtimeout limits how long MongoDB waits for the requested acknowledgment level. The right choice depends on the durability you need and the replica-set topology you run.

What does MongoDB write concern guarantee?

Write concern tells MongoDB when it may report a write as acknowledged. It is a threshold, not a blanket guarantee against data loss: a primary can acknowledge a write before other members have it, and topology changes or a timeout can leave the outcome uncertain. MongoDB describes the principle this way: “The more members that acknowledge a write, the less likely the written data could roll back if the primary fails.” That is a qualitative statement, not a measured probability. MongoDB’s replica-set write concern documentation explains the failover trade-off.

The main settings are w, the acknowledgment threshold; j, which can require journal persistence; and wtimeout, a time limit in milliseconds for reaching the requested w level.

How do the common write concern choices differ?

Choice What must acknowledge Persistence and trade-off
w:0 No acknowledgment is requested. Does not confirm that a write met a durability or replication threshold. Some socket or networking errors may still be reported.
w:1 The primary in a replica set, or the standalone server. Without j:true, acknowledgment need not mean journal persistence. It can return sooner, but a primary failure before replication can leave the write exposed to rollback.
Numeric w:n above 1 The primary and enough data-bearing members to reach the specified count. Can include non-voting data-bearing members. Without j:true, the acknowledgment threshold alone does not require journal persistence.
w:"majority" MongoDB’s calculated majority of data-bearing voting members, subject to the replica-set voting rules. Typically offers stronger protection against ordinary primary failover, but may take longer or time out. With the documented default writeConcernMajorityJournalDefault:true, majority writes without explicit j normally wait for journal persistence.

MongoDB documents w:"majority" as the implicit default for most deployments, but an arbiter-related topology exception can make the implicit default w:1. Do not infer the default from a generic example: check the actual replica-set configuration and MongoDB’s documented default rules.

Does j:true prevent rollback?

No. j:true asks that the members counted toward the selected w level write the operation to their on-disk journals. It strengthens persistence on those members, but does not replace a replication threshold or independently guarantee survival of a primary failover. For example, a journaled w:1 write can still be present only on the primary when it fails.

For majority writes without an explicit j, the behavior depends on writeConcernMajorityJournalDefault. MongoDB’s v8.3 self-managed configuration reference documents a default of true: majority acknowledgment then waits for a majority of voting members to write the oplog entry to the on-disk journal. The documentation also says all voting members must use journaling when this setting is true; deployments with an in-memory voting member require it to be false. Verify the setting, storage engine, and server version in the deployment rather than assuming every installation behaves alike. MongoDB’s replica-set configuration reference describes the setting.

What happens when wtimeout expires?

wtimeout bounds the wait to reach the requested w acknowledgment after the primary operation succeeds. It is expressed in milliseconds; a value of zero is equivalent to omitting the timeout. It does not apply when w is at or below 1.

If the deadline passes before enough members acknowledge, MongoDB returns a write concern error. That error does not undo a modification already made on the primary. Replication may complete later, or the write may eventually be rolled back, depending on what happens in the replica set. Treat a write concern error as an uncertain replication outcome, not proof that the operation did not happen. Applications should distinguish it from an operation error and use retry behavior appropriate to the write’s semantics; idempotent operations are easier to retry safely. See the MongoDB write concern reference for the timeout behavior.

How does majority acknowledgment interact with version and reads?

MongoDB’s documentation says that, starting in MongoDB 8.0, a w:"majority" write can be acknowledged after a majority of data-bearing members durably write the oplog entry; secondaries then apply the change asynchronously. In earlier releases, acknowledgment waited for members to apply the write. This means that after an 8.0-or-later majority acknowledgment, a read routed immediately to a secondary may arrive before that secondary has applied the change. Check the documentation for the precise server version you operate: the versioned write concern reference describes this change.

Read concern and routing matter when an application needs read-your-writes behavior. Majority read concern returns data acknowledged by a majority. For causal consistency, MongoDB requires majority read concern and majority write concern in the session; a secondary may still not have applied a newly majority-acknowledged write immediately under the 8.0 behavior. See MongoDB’s majority read concern documentation.

How do arbiters affect majority and the default?

MongoDB calculates the write concern majority using the smaller of the majority of voting members, including arbiters, and the number of data-bearing voting members. Consequently, the availability of data-bearing voters can determine whether a majority write completes; counting all replica-set members alone is not enough. MongoDB exposes writeMajorityCount in replica-set status, which can help you inspect the live threshold. Review the replica-set write concern rules alongside your live configuration.

The implicit default has a related arbiter exception: if the set has at least one arbiter and the number of non-arbiter members is not greater than the majority of voting nodes, MongoDB uses w:1; otherwise the implicit default is w:"majority". This is a topology-specific default, not a recommendation to rely on an unstated setting. MongoDB’s default read and write concern page gives the conditions.

How should you choose and verify a setting?

  • Choose w:1 when a primary acknowledgment is sufficient and you accept greater exposure to rollback before replication.
  • Choose w:"majority" when the application needs the stronger acknowledgment threshold for ordinary failover protection, while accounting for topology, journaling configuration, and the possibility of longer waits or timeouts.
  • Use numeric w:n when a specific member count is required, remembering that the count can include non-voting data-bearing members.
  • Add j:true when journal persistence is required for the members counted by the chosen w; do not treat it as a substitute for replication.
  • Set wtimeout as an operational limit on waiting, not as a way to decide whether the write succeeded.
  • Inspect the server version, replica-set configuration, journaling capability, and live majority count before depending on an implicit default or a failover assumption.

MongoDB’s setDefaultRWConcern command documentation covers configuring default read and write concerns. Explicitly specifying the needed concern at the appropriate application or deployment level can make the intended acknowledgment policy clearer than relying on a topology-sensitive default.
