Ad-Blocking VPNs: 4 Picks and What the Tests Actually Show

PIA, NordVPN, Proton VPN, and IVPN have credible ad-blocking test results—but different tests produce different scores, and VPN filters do not remove every ad.

Private Internet Access, NordVPN, Proton VPN, and IVPN are four defensible ad-blocking VPN picks based on the available test results. They are not a proven 2026 top-four ranking: the published tests use different methods, one score table has no clearly stated test date, and real-site ad blocking is inconsistent. A VPN’s filter can reduce ads and tracking, but it is not a substitute for a dedicated ad blocker.

How to read the ad-blocking scores

Ad blocking is an additional VPN feature, not a capability shared by every VPN. Results depend on what a test counts and how it measures blocking. Top10VPN says it tested 16 VPN blockers with an objective ad-block checker, then also considered manual website tests and supported operating systems or browsers. Its results are not directly interchangeable with Tom’s Guide’s separate score table or Security.org’s Proton VPN review.

For example, Top10VPN reported that Private Internet Access (PIA), NordVPN, and IVPN each blocked more than 90% of ads and trackers in its comparison. Tom’s Guide’s table instead reports 81% for PIA and 51% for NordVPN. Its page cautions that its results are not scientific or comprehensive enough to give the full picture; the test date is not established in the available material. These figures should be read as separate test outcomes, not averaged into a new score or treated as a current universal ranking.

Security.org’s 2026 VPN guide reports that its team spent nine months testing VPNs across Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS, connecting to servers in dozens of countries. In its Proton VPN section, it says NetShield blocked more than 90% of ads. That is a result from Security.org’s testing, not a guarantee for every device, site, or configuration.

Four ad-blocking VPNs to consider

VPN and blocker Published ad-blocking evidence Availability or requirement stated in the sources
Private Internet Access (PIA) MACE Top10VPN calls MACE its top overall VPN ad blocker. Its detailed analysis describes a result of 95% of ads and trackers blocked, while its overview separately says MACE blocked more than 100% of ads and over 83% of trackers. Tom’s Guide lists an 81% ad-blocking score; its test date is not established. The available material does not specify supported platforms or plan requirements.
NordVPN Threat Protection Top10VPN reports more than 90% of ads and trackers blocked in its comparison. Tom’s Guide lists a 51% ad-blocking score in a table whose test date is not established. Tom’s Guide says Threat Protection Pro is limited to desktop apps and requires Plus or a higher tier. Check the current product name, platform list, and plan requirements before subscribing.
Proton VPN NetShield Security.org’s 2026 guide reports more than 90% of ads blocked in its testing, but says NetShield did not block YouTube ads. Tom’s Guide lists a 75% ad-blocking score; its test date is not established. Proton says NetShield is available on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS/iPadOS with paid plans. It requires an active Proton VPN connection.
IVPN Top10VPN reports that IVPN blocked more than 90% of ads and trackers in its comparison. The available evidence does not provide another score for IVPN. Platform and plan details are not established in the available test material.

PIA MACE: strongest case in Top10VPN’s comparison

PIA is the clearest pick if you prioritize Top10VPN’s comparative results: the publisher ranked MACE first overall among the blockers it evaluated. Treat its percentages with care. The detailed analysis and overview use different descriptions of the result, and neither should be combined with Tom’s Guide’s 81% score as though they measured the same run.

NordVPN Threat Protection: a strong result in one test, a lower one in another

NordVPN illustrates why a single “best” score can mislead. It exceeded 90% in Top10VPN’s comparison but received 51% in Tom’s Guide’s table. The product description also matters: Tom’s Guide’s desktop and tier restriction refers specifically to Threat Protection Pro, not necessarily every feature or plan carrying the Threat Protection name.

  • 【Keep your Internet Safe】IPv6 supported. OpenVPN & WireGuard pre-installed, compatible with 30+ VPN service providers. Cloudflare encryption supported to protect the privacy.

Proton VPN NetShield: useful domain filtering, with a video-ad caveat

Proton describes NetShield as DNS filtering. When a website or app requests a domain, Proton’s DNS server checks it against lists associated with ads, trackers, and malware, then blocks flagged resources. The settings allow malware-only filtering or filtering that also blocks ads and trackers. Proton says it added subdomain blocking in February 2026 and calls the updated feature “six times more powerful”; that multiplier is Proton’s own claim, not an independent test result.

IVPN: another high result in Top10VPN’s test

IVPN belongs in this shortlist because Top10VPN reports more than 90% of ads and trackers blocked in the same comparison that found high results for PIA and NordVPN. The available evidence does not establish a separate score, supported-device list, or plan requirement, so there is not enough basis to make a broader claim about its relative value or convenience.

What a VPN blocker can—and cannot—remove

Most of these features work by blocking requests to known ad or tracker domains. That can prevent some ad resources from loading, but it does not reliably remove advertising embedded in a site or service. Top10VPN’s manual tests found that none of its tested VPN blockers covered all four popular sites it checked; PIA and NordVPN worked on three out of four.

  • YouTube: banner filtering does not guarantee that pre-roll or other video ads disappear. Top10VPN found that pre-roll ads may remain, and Security.org says NetShield did not block YouTube ads in its testing.
  • Spotify: a VPN blocker cannot remove Spotify premium ads, according to Top10VPN.
  • Facebook: sponsored posts are embedded in the feed and are not removed by these VPN filters, according to Top10VPN.
  • Twitch: Top10VPN found results inconsistent; blocking ads on one visit does not establish reliable blocking.

So, do VPNs actually block ads? They can block some, particularly requests to known ad and tracker domains. Whether that changes what you see depends on the site, app, and type of ad.

Which feature fits your devices and setup?

Check the connection and plan requirements

  • NetShield: Proton documents support for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS/iPadOS on paid plans; it works while connected to Proton VPN.
  • Threat Protection Pro: Tom’s Guide describes this component as desktop-only and available on Plus or higher. Because product names and plan terms can change, confirm them in NordVPN’s current app or plan details.
  • MACE and IVPN: The cited test results do not establish their current platform coverage or plan requirements.

Understand app versus browser filtering

Proton’s stated NetShield availability covers its VPN apps on the listed operating systems. In general, verify whether a feature filters traffic only while the VPN is connected or also operates independently as a browser extension; those are different kinds of coverage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a router only when whole-network VPN coverage matters

A VPN-compatible router can route traffic for devices that cannot run a VPN app, but this does not guarantee that a provider’s ad filtering will work through every router setup. The router must support a compatible VPN protocol and configuration, and the filtering feature must be compatible with that arrangement. Proton’s router guidance notes that a compatible OpenVPN or WireGuard client is required and that many ISP-supplied routers do not support VPN configuration. Confirm the exact router, firmware, protocol, and service behavior before relying on it for network-wide filtering.

  • Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
  • A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
  • Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
  • Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
  • Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.

Do you still need a separate ad blocker?

Usually, yes, if dependable ad removal is the goal. A VPN’s filter can add privacy and block some known domains, but the tests show limits on embedded and streaming ads. Top10VPN’s testing guide puts it plainly: “You still need an ad blocker even if your VPN includes one.” A browser or device-level blocker may provide another layer, though its own coverage and compatibility should be checked for the sites and apps you use.

Keep VPN performance scores separate from ad-blocking scores

A VPN can be fast, stable, and leak-resistant without having the strongest ad filter. Artifact Security’s 2026 VPN performance test, reported by NordVPN on August 10, 2026, assessed throughput, stability, latency, connection time, leak protection, website accessibility, and feature reliability under AMTSO VPN Testing Guidelines. Those are performance and functionality measures, not ad-blocking measurements. They cannot establish which VPN blocks the most ads.

For the same reason, no combined score or definitive 2026 winner can be inferred from the available ad-blocking results: the publishers used different tests, and Tom’s Guide’s table does not establish a test date. Use the attributed results above to shortlist a service, then confirm its current feature availability and test it against the particular sites and devices that matter to you.
