Ad Blocker Not Working in Chrome? Check These Fixes

Check whether Chrome’s built-in ad control or an extension is involved, then troubleshoot its status, site access, Incognito behavior, and site settings.

If an ad blocker is not working in Chrome, first identify whether you mean Chrome’s built-in intrusive-ad control or a separately installed extension. Then check the extension’s status and access to the affected site, compare the same page in regular and Incognito browsing, and review site settings. These checks can explain why blocking differs from one site or window to another; neither Chrome’s control nor an extension is guaranteed to remove every ad.

First, identify which ad blocker you mean

Chrome has a built-in control for ads on sites it classifies as providing poor ad experiences, such as pages with excessive, flashing, or autoplaying ads, or ad walls. It is separate from an ad-blocking extension you install. Google explains the built-in control in its Chrome ad settings help.

If you installed a blocker from the Chrome Web Store, troubleshoot it through Chrome’s Extensions manager. If you are unsure which one is affecting the page, check both the site setting and the extension rather than assuming they are the same feature.

Check the extension’s status and site access

  1. In Chrome, open the Extensions manager: select the three-dot menu, then Extensions > Manage Extensions. Find the ad blocker and make sure its switch is on. Google’s extension management guidance describes how to turn extensions on or off and manage their access.
  2. On the extension’s card, check its site access setting. If it is limited to specific sites, make sure the affected page is allowed. The wording and available options can vary with Chrome version and the extension.
  3. If Chrome labels the extension corrupted, use the built-in Repair action if it is offered, then check the affected site again.
  4. If the extension is missing, grayed out, or switched off and cannot be enabled, check whether Chrome disabled it. Google Chrome Web Store Help says: “The extensions that Chrome turned off either didn’t come from the Chrome Web Store or were determined unsafe.” See Google’s explanation of disabled extensions.

Find out whether the problem is limited to one site

Try the same page and, if appropriate, another site where you normally expect the blocker to work. Change one setting at a time and observe what changes. If the blocker works elsewhere, focus on the affected site’s access and permissions rather than reinstalling or changing several things at once.

Chrome’s built-in ad control is managed through site settings. To inspect the setting for a page, open that site, select the site information icon beside the address, and open Site settings. Review the relevant ad permission and the site’s other permissions. Google’s ad settings instructions explain the built-in control; an extension’s own access is configured separately in the Extensions manager.

Compare regular browsing with Incognito

Incognito is a useful comparison, but it does not automatically reproduce normal browsing conditions. To allow an extension in Incognito, open Extensions > Manage Extensions, select Details for the extension, and turn on Allow in Incognito if that option is available and you want to test it there. Google’s extension settings guidance covers extension permissions.

Chrome blocks third-party cookies by default in Incognito. Google notes that some sites may not work as expected when third-party cookies are blocked, and Chrome offers site-specific exceptions. If the page behaves differently in Incognito, consider whether cookie behavior or the extension’s Incognito permission explains the difference. A cookie exception is a targeted test for site functionality, not a general ad-blocking fix. See Chrome’s cookie settings help and its guidance on third-party cookies.

Update Chrome and check whether it is managed

Open the three-dot menu and select Help > About Google Chrome to check for an update; restart Chrome if it asks you to. Google recommends checking that Chrome is current when troubleshooting extension installation or compatibility. Follow its Chrome update instructions.

If this is a work or school device, an administrator may restrict extension installation or settings. If an option is unavailable or the extension is controlled by policy, ask the administrator rather than trying to bypass the restriction. Google’s extension installation and management help notes that managed devices can limit installation.

Check for conflicts with other extensions

If several extensions are active, or Chrome itself has become slow, temporarily turn off unrelated extensions in Extensions > Manage Extensions. Test the affected page, then re-enable trusted extensions one at a time to see whether a conflict changes the result. This is a diagnostic step, not a reason to leave extensions you use disabled. Google also recommends turning off or removing extensions that are not in use; see Chrome’s extension guidance.

Treat redirects and recurring pop-ups as a separate warning

Unexpected redirects, new tabs, recurring pop-ups, or extensions that return after removal may indicate unwanted software rather than a blocker setting. Follow Google’s guidance for unwanted ads, pop-ups, and malware. Avoid downloading a utility from an unsolicited “virus detected” alert or other suspicious prompt; use official download sources.

If the blocker still does not work

After checking the extension state, site access, Incognito behavior, site settings, Chrome updates, and possible conflicts, consult the extension developer’s support channel for help specific to that extension. For Chrome settings or browser issues, use Chrome Help. The official documentation does not establish a universally best blocker or promise that every ad can be blocked.
