Acumatica 2026 R2: How AI Agents and Outside AI Tools Are Controlled

Acumatica 2026 R2 distinguishes embedded AI features from MCP connections to outside tools. Here is what those clients can retrieve and how access is scoped.

Acumatica 2026 R2 separates AI that works inside the ERP from outside AI clients that retrieve selected ERP data. For external tools, the documented MCP path is narrow: an administrator enables the MCP server, publishes specific Generic Inquiries, and grants connecting users access to them. Acumatica says role-based permissions and field-level masking carry over, but those are vendor-described controls—not an independent security audit—and the setup choices determine what data is exposed.

What Acumatica announced in 2026 R2

Acumatica announced general availability of 2026 R2 on October 1, 2026. The release groups updates across AI productivity, analytics, industry workflows, portals and payments, platform modernization, and usability. General availability does not establish that every feature is enabled or available to every customer; rollout, edition, subscription, and configuration can matter.

The release describes two related but distinct AI paths: capabilities embedded in Acumatica, including AI Assistant and AI Automation, and MCP connections that let compatible outside AI clients retrieve selected Acumatica data. The distinction matters: an embedded workflow capability is not the same thing as an external client querying an approved data source.

How does Acumatica control outside AI tools?

Acumatica describes its MCP connection as allowing tools such as Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, and other MCP-compatible clients to connect to Acumatica data without exporting or duplicating that data in another AI workspace. The vendor says role-based permissions, inherited security, field-level data masking, centralized governance, and query auditability apply. These are Acumatica’s descriptions of its controls, not independently verified security outcomes.

Published inquiries define the retrieval scope

In the technical guide, an MCP server is a focused set of tools. Its Generic Inquiry tool retrieves data from one published Generic Inquiry. Setup requires enabling the MCP Server feature, publishing the inquiries to the UI, and ensuring that connecting users have access to those inquiries. Administrators therefore need to decide which inquiries to expose and which users can access them; the described tool does not imply unrestricted access to the ERP database.

The practical control boundary is the combination of the published inquiry set and the permissions of the connecting user, alongside any applicable masking and governance configuration. Acumatica’s release announcement says queries are auditable, but the detailed implementation and operational behavior should be confirmed in the tenant’s documentation and configuration.

Does MCP let an AI tool change ERP records?

The Generic Inquiry MCP tool documented here retrieves inquiry data. The technical guide does not describe that tool as writing or updating ERP records. Acumatica separately describes prompt-driven workflows and agent capabilities; those should not be conflated with read-only inquiry retrieval. A community release announcement characterizes external MCP access as governed, read-only access to published inquiries and mentions expanded masking and token-usage tracking, but those details should be verified against official documentation for the customer’s tenant before being relied on.

How embedded AI differs from an MCP connection

Path What it is for What the cited materials establish
AI Assistant and AI Automation AI capabilities within Acumatica The release announcement says they can answer business questions, detect anomalies, automate repetitive tasks, and trigger prompt-driven workflows.
MCP connection External AI clients retrieving selected Acumatica data The technical guide describes retrieval from a single published Generic Inquiry through a configured tool, subject to user access.

Acumatica’s announcement also describes building agents with plain-text prompts and Generic Inquiries. Its chief engineering officer, Miten Mehta, said: “With 2026 R2, we enable our customers and partners to build agents with plain text prompts and generic inquiries.” That release statement does not change the narrower scope of the documented MCP Generic Inquiry retrieval tool.

What is needed for an agent LLM connection?

For the agent LLM connection form, Acumatica’s documentation says an administrator needs an account with an LLM provider and a deployed model. It lists Azure, Amazon Bedrock, OpenAI, and Anthropic as supported providers for that form. This is a provider list for agent LLM connections, not a definitive list of MCP clients.

Acumatica cautions that model availability can change. Administrators should check the provider’s model status and test the connection rather than assume a particular model remains available or compatible. Provider account and model requirements for the agent connection are separate from the choices about which inquiries an MCP client can retrieve.

What changes for reporting and performance?

Acumatica says 2026 R2 reporting and analytics run against a dedicated, performance-optimized copy of ERP data rather than the live transactional database, with the stated aim of reducing competition between reporting and transaction processing. The announcement does not provide a measured latency, throughput, benchmark, or quantified speed improvement, so no specific performance gain can be inferred.

The release overview also mentions Generic Inquiry optimization, Grouped Table views, reporting security, scheduling changes, industry-specific workflows, and other platform updates. It does not establish that every feature applies to every edition or is switched on for every customer; confirm applicability, configuration, subscription, and rollout with Acumatica or the customer’s administrator.

Questions to settle before enabling external access

  • Which inquiries are necessary? Publish only the inquiries that serve the intended retrieval task, and understand the fields and records each inquiry returns.
  • Which users will connect? Confirm their access to the published inquiries and how inherited permissions apply in the tenant.
  • How is masking configured? Validate applicable field-level masking in the actual setup rather than treating the announcement as proof of a particular outcome.
  • What can be audited? Confirm the available query and token-usage records and who can review them. Acumatica describes centralized governance and query auditability; implementation details should be checked in the tenant.
  • Is the model connection current? Check provider model availability and test the connection because model status can change.
