Activision has acknowledged that Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 missed the mark. Chief marketing officer Tyler Bahl said the company was unhappy with parts of the 2025 release and that players wanted a fresher experience with a sharper tonal change.
What Activision admitted about Black Ops 7
In an interview with The Game Business published October 15, 2026, Activision chief marketing officer Tyler Bahl said the company had heard the community’s criticism. “I don’t think we were happy with every aspect of last year’s game, and we heard the feedback loud and clear,” Bahl said. He added that the game “was not something that our community was looking for.”

Bahl’s comments are an unusually direct admission from Activision. Rather than blaming one mode or a technical issue, he described a broader mismatch between the game’s direction and what long-term players expected from Call of Duty.

Why Black Ops 7 missed expectations
A rapid sequence of sequels
The Game Business connected the disappointment to Activision’s quick-release pattern: Modern Warfare 2 in 2022, Modern Warfare 3 in 2023, Black Ops 6 in 2024 and Black Ops 7 in 2025. That schedule gave players another major sequel every year, but it also made each release feel less like a reset.

Bahl said the community wanted something “fresh.” Although Black Ops 7 changed its time period and added new ways to play, Activision concluded that those feature changes did not provide the tonal shift players were seeking.
A move away from Call of Duty’s grounded identity
Activision had already recognized this concern in an August 2025 community update. The company said Call of Duty had “drifted from what made Call of Duty unique in the first place: immersive, intense, visceral and in many ways grounded.” It described its goal as a spiritual successor to Black Ops 2 while still taking major creative risks.
That statement helps explain the tension around Black Ops 7: the game pursued a futuristic 2035 setting and a large feature set, while part of the audience wanted a more recognizable military-shooter tone.

What the commercial signals showed
The available figures point to a significant downturn, although they do not provide a complete sales ledger.

The player-count comparison needs care. Data for Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 3 is unavailable after July 2025, while Black Ops 6 data is unavailable after July 2026. The figures therefore indicate a decline reported by Ampere, not a complete, continuous measurement of every Call of Duty player.
What Black Ops 7 actually included
The game launched on November 14, 2025, with Treyarch leading development alongside Raven Software. Its announced content was substantial:

The feature list shows why Activision viewed the release as an ambitious entry. The criticism was not that the game lacked content; it was that its setting, tone and overall direction did not satisfy the audience the company was trying to retain.

Activision’s August 2025 update said Black Ops 6 operators, operator skins and weapons would not carry into Black Ops 7. The stated reason was that the new game needed to feel authentic to its setting and to Call of Duty. Warzone was not affected by that decision.
This was a deliberate separation rather than a technical omission. Removing older cosmetics and weapons allowed the new title to establish its own visual and gameplay identity, but it also meant players could not bring forward content they had earned or purchased in the prior annual release.

What Activision says it will change next
A more grounded Modern Warfare 4
Bahl said the response would arrive through Modern Warfare 4. Activision describes that project as a return to a grounded military shooter with a cinematic, authentic presentation and the edge associated with Call of Duty.
The company has also said it will judge the game by whether players actually like it, not only by whether it reaches a predetermined sales target. Bahl’s standard was explicit: strong sales would still represent a failure if the audience disliked the game.
More direct contact with the community
The Game Business reported that Activision plans to show Modern Warfare 4 at more than 20 events and publish behind-the-scenes material. The aim is to rebuild trust by exposing more of the development process and gathering feedback before launch.

Is Black Ops 7 worth buying now?
There is no single answer without a current price, platform and preferred mode. The documented case for buying is its broad package: a solo or four-player campaign, multiplayer, Zombies, 2035-era equipment, 16 launch 6v6 maps, 20v20 battles and shared progression. Players who specifically want that futuristic setting or cooperative campaign may find those features sufficient.
The case for waiting is equally clear. Activision has acknowledged that the game’s tone and direction did not match community expectations, and the reported European launch decline and U.S. ranking show that its reception was weaker than recent entries. Anyone seeking a grounded military atmosphere should evaluate whether the futuristic 2035 approach suits them before purchasing. Current price, platform performance and the activity of the local player base should be checked at the time of purchase because those factors are not established by the statements above.
What this admission means
Activision’s comments frame Black Ops 7 as a lesson about direction, not simply content volume. The company believes annual releases became too similar in succession and that adding modes or changing the era was not enough to create a genuinely new experience. Its proposed correction is a more grounded Modern Warfare 4, earlier community engagement and a success test based on player approval as well as revenue.
