Netflix said on October 14, 2026, that it plans to eliminate about 1,000 positions—roughly 6% of its workforce—while reshaping the company around products and markets it believes can drive its next phase of growth. Product, technology, legal and human-resources teams are expected to bear the largest impact.
The cuts are not being presented as a crisis response. Netflix remains profitable and says it will keep investing in high-impact improvements, but subscriber growth has slowed and rivals now include social-video services competing for the same finite hours of attention.

What Netflix announced
Co-CEOs Greg Peters and Ted Sarandos disclosed the planned reduction in an internal memo on October 14, 2026. The figure is approximate—about or nearly 1,000 jobs—and represents around 6% of Netflix’s workforce. The memo identified product, technology, legal and human-resources functions as the areas most likely to be affected.
Netflix has not disclosed a geographic breakdown, severance terms or an exact count for each department. A regulatory filing reported by TechCrunch put the company’s full-time workforce at about 16,000 people at the end of 2025, providing context for the scale of the announcement without establishing a precise final headcount after the cuts.

Why cut jobs while Netflix is profitable?
Management says the objective is tighter allocation of people and money, not emergency cost-cutting. Peters and Sarandos wrote: “Decisions like these are never easy, and we don’t take them lightly.” They added that Netflix’s mission requires it to be “disciplined about where we prioritize our people and resources” while investing in future growth and “high impact areas to improve our service.”
The financial figures show why the announcement can coexist with layoffs:

TechCrunch reported that Netflix said it would “continue to invest aggressively in high impact areas” and remained on track for its full-year forecast. In other words, the company is choosing which capabilities to expand rather than trying to fund growth from a position of losses.

Netflix held 19% of the streaming market in figures cited by AP from JustWatch. Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ were close behind, keeping pressure on subscription retention and the value of each new release.

The larger challenge is time spent outside traditional streaming. TechCrunch and AP described competition from YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and similar social-video platforms. Research cited in those reports found TikTok catching up with Netflix in engagement and YouTube surpassing Netflix in average daily viewing during 2025. Those comparisons concern attention and viewing behavior, not a claim that either platform has replaced Netflix’s paid membership model.
| Competitor or category | What the reports establish | Why it matters to Netflix |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ | Close behind Netflix in streaming-market share, according to AP’s account of JustWatch data | They compete for subscription spending and viewing time |
| YouTube | Surpassed Netflix in average daily viewing in 2025, according to research cited by AP and TechCrunch | It competes for daily attention across a much broader video ecosystem |
| TikTok | Caught up with Netflix in engagement in the cited 2025 research | Short-form, highly frequent use can reduce the time available for long-form shows and films |
Growth remains positive, but it is slowing
Netflix ended 2025 with more than 325 million paid memberships and added about 23 million members during the year. AP reported that the company added roughly 41 million in 2024, so the pace of additions dropped even as the total audience reached a record level.

Management expected 2026 revenue growth to moderate to 12%–14%, down from 16% in 2025. Slower growth does not mean the business is shrinking; it means each additional percentage point requires more effective content, product design, pricing, advertising and engagement decisions.
Viewing also remained substantial. Netflix reported 96 billion viewing hours in the second half of 2025, up 2% year over year. The combination of rising viewing, strong margins and slower membership gains helps explain why management framed the layoffs as prioritization for future growth rather than a rescue operation.

Where Netflix says it will invest
Netflix’s strategy documents identify several ways to deepen engagement and diversify how people use the service:
- Advertising: The company reported more than $1.5 billion in advertising revenue for 2025, giving its ad-supported business a meaningful but still developing role.
- Live programming: Live events can create appointment viewing and add reasons to open the service between major scripted releases.
- Games: Netflix has described a cloud-first games strategy, extending the service beyond passive video.
- Video podcasts: Video podcasts are another format aimed at increasing frequency and competing for daily attention.
- Children’s programming: Kids’ content remains part of the company’s plan to make the service useful across a household.
- Product improvements: Netflix says it will continue changing the service in areas it considers high impact, including the user experience and discovery of content.
What the layoffs do—and do not—prove
The announcement supports a strategic interpretation: Netflix is reallocating resources while growth becomes harder and attention is fragmented across more services. It does not establish that one competitor caused the cuts, or that one financial metric triggered them. The company’s statements connect the reduction to prioritization and future investment, while the financial disclosures show a profitable business with slower expansion.
Ted Sarandos summarized the competitive posture this way: “We are no strangers to competition and we are now strangers to change.” The planned reduction is therefore best read as an organizational reset around changing consumption habits, not evidence that Netflix has lost the streaming market.
What to watch after the announcement
Netflix’s next results will show whether the new priorities translate into measurable gains. The most relevant signals are membership additions, revenue growth against the 12%–14% 2026 expectation, advertising revenue, viewing hours and the adoption of live, gaming and podcast offerings. How those indicators develop will reveal whether fewer employees are being concentrated effectively on the high-impact areas management identified.
