It can help manage speed and following distance, but it is not self-driving: the driver remains responsible for watching the road and controlling the vehicle.
What active cruise control means
Conventional cruise control is designed to maintain a speed selected by the driver. Active or adaptive cruise control adds a response to traffic ahead: when the system detects a vehicle traveling more slowly, it can reduce the car’s speed to maintain a preset following distance. If the path clears, it may accelerate toward the set speed again. The exact behavior depends on the vehicle. NHTSA describes adaptive cruise control as automatically adjusting vehicle speed to keep a preset distance from the vehicle ahead.

Manufacturers have used several names for similar systems, including Active Cruise Control, Intelligent Cruise Control, Dynamic Cruise Control and Distronic. The label can depend on the manufacturer and model year, so check the owner’s manual to confirm what a particular car’s feature does. NHTSA’s 2007 report documents this variation in terminology; its historical details should not be treated as current specifications.
How it differs from ordinary cruise control
| Feature | Conventional cruise control | Active/adaptive cruise control |
|---|---|---|
| Maintains a driver-selected speed | Yes | Yes, when conditions allow |
| Adjusts speed in response to a vehicle ahead | No | Yes; it can slow down to maintain a selected gap |
| Can follow traffic to a stop or resume after stopping | No | Depends on the vehicle’s system and instructions |
ACC does not guarantee a particular stopping distance or response to every vehicle and road situation. Its role is to assist with speed and spacing, not to replace the driver’s judgment.

Is active cruise control self-driving?
No. NHTSA classifies adaptive cruise control as Level 1 driver assistance. The driver must remain attentive and responsible while it is operating. Keep monitoring traffic, be ready to brake or steer, and follow the vehicle manual’s instructions for engaging and canceling the feature. NHTSA’s driver-assistance guidance explains that these systems do not make the vehicle autonomous.
Why capabilities vary by car
Low-speed operation, following traffic to a complete stop, and automatically resuming after a stop are not universal ACC features. For example, a Volkswagen service bulletin from March 2019 describes different ACC versions: one basic variant hands control back at about 18 mph, while other versions can follow traffic to a stop or resume after stopping. These are Volkswagen-specific examples, not general ACC specifications.

Sensor placement and operating restrictions also differ. The same Volkswagen bulletin notes that a dirty sensor or severe weather, including heavy rain, snowfall or an iced-over sensor, can temporarily make the cited vehicle’s system unavailable. Other vehicles may behave differently. Consult the owner’s manual for the system’s speed range, sensor location, warnings, limitations and instructions for responding when it disengages.

What to remember before using it
- Use the owner’s manual to confirm the feature’s name, controls and limits for your specific vehicle.
- Keep the sensors’ view clear as directed by the manufacturer; do not assume the system can operate through dirt, ice or severe weather.
- Stay alert and prepared to intervene, even when ACC is maintaining speed and distance.
- Do not assume the vehicle will stop, remain stopped, or start moving again unless its manual says that it can and explains what the driver must do.
