Acronis Backup Restore: Choose the Right Recovery Method

Choose the Acronis restore method by what you need back and whether Windows starts. These steps cover file recovery, system-disk recovery, bootable media, and cloud backups.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The right way to restore an Acronis backup depends on what you need back and whether the computer still starts: use the Acronis app for files, its recovery workflow for a working Windows system, or bootable media if Windows will not start. The steps below draw on Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office instructions from 2022 and 2023, plus documentation for other Acronis products. Product versions use different labels and may offer different features, so confirm which Acronis product and version you have before proceeding.

Choose the restore route

What you want to restore Does Windows start? Route
Individual files or folders Yes Open the backup in the Acronis application, select the items and restore destination.
System disk or partitions Yes Use the application’s recovery option and select the backup version and system partitions.
System disk or partitions No Start the computer from Acronis bootable media and run recovery from there.
System backup stored in Acronis Cloud No Use bootable media with internet access and Acronis account credentials.

These are distinct procedures, not interchangeable ways to recover the same thing. The steps below reflect the cited Home Office guides; another Acronis product may have different controls.

Before you start

  • Identify the Acronis product and version, the computer’s operating system, and whether the backup is on a local drive, network location, or in the cloud.
  • Decide whether you need selected files, a partition, or the whole system. Disk recovery can replace data on the destination partition.
  • Locate the backup and choose the intended recovery point. In the Home Office file-recovery workflow documented in 2023, the latest version is selected by default, but another date and time can be chosen.
  • If Windows will not start, make sure you have suitable Acronis bootable media. Acronis documentation lists USB sticks among the possible media choices and describes local, network, and cloud backup locations.

Restore files or folders in the Acronis app

  1. Open Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office and go to Backup.
  2. Select the backup that contains the files or folders you need. Choose a different backup version if the default latest version is not the one you want.
  3. Select the files or folders to recover.
  4. Choose whether to restore them to their original location or another folder, then start the restore.

The exact labels can vary by release. Acronis’s 2023 Home Office help describes both original-location and alternate-folder restoration.

  4. Review the recovery destination and operation summary. Acronis warns that data on the selected destination partition will be lost as the recovered data and file system replace it.
  5. Start recovery and allow the computer to restart when prompted.

In the cited 2022 instructions, the original partition must have at least 5% free space for the Recover now button to be available. Treat that threshold as specific to those instructions rather than a universal requirement for every Acronis product or release.

Restoring to different hardware

Do not assume a standard system-disk restore will work unchanged on a different computer. Acronis Cyber Protect 16 documentation specifies Universal Restore for recovery to dissimilar hardware. That statement applies to the documented Cyber Protect 16 context; check the feature’s availability and licensing for your product and edition.
