A BIOS or UEFI supervisor password generally restricts who can enter firmware setup or change protected settings. It is separate from Secure Boot, which checks whether boot software is trusted. The password can help guard configuration access, but setting one does not turn on Secure Boot, encrypt the device, or guarantee protection against theft or tampering.
What a supervisor password does
“BIOS password” is a broad, informal label for several kinds of firmware credentials. UEFI is the newer firmware interface that replaced the older BIOS interface; firmware controls startup before handing control to Windows or another operating system. UEFI can support platform security features such as Secure Boot. Microsoft’s UEFI overview explains the role of firmware and its capabilities.

A supervisor or administrator password typically gates access to firmware settings, including changes to startup configuration. The exact behavior and available password types depend on the device maker and model. For example, ASUS describes several distinct firmware password types:
- Administrator password: Controls access to change firmware settings.
- User password: May function as a password required at startup; where an administrator password is also set, user access may be restricted to viewing settings.
- Hard-drive password: Protects access to a drive, rather than simply controlling entry to setup.
- OPAL password: Applies to supported storage devices that use the OPAL security standard.
These labels and functions are vendor- and model-dependent. Identify the prompt you see before choosing a recovery route: a setup password, a startup password, and a drive password are not necessarily interchangeable.

How it differs from Secure Boot
A firmware password controls who can access or change settings; Secure Boot checks the software involved in starting the device. Microsoft says Secure Boot verifies signatures for boot software such as firmware drivers, EFI applications, and the operating system, helping the device start with software trusted by the original equipment manufacturer. The controls can complement one another, but neither replaces the other. A supervisor password does not itself enable Secure Boot, and Secure Boot does not prevent an authorized or otherwise successful user from changing every firmware setting. Feature availability and configuration depend on the system, so check the device maker’s documentation as well as Microsoft’s UEFI guidance.

When a firmware password is useful—and what it cannot do
On a device where it is supported and configured, a supervisor password can make it harder for someone without the credential to alter protected firmware settings, such as boot configuration. It is an access-control measure, not encryption. The official sources describing its function do not quantify how effective it is against real-world attacks, so it should not be treated as a guarantee that a device is secure.

Use it as one part of a broader security configuration, alongside controls appropriate to the device and operating system. Do not assume a password alone protects data stored on a stolen computer or prevents physical tampering.

If you are locked out
Recovery depends on the manufacturer, exact model, and type of password. Use the supported route rather than relying on a generic reset recipe.
- Identify the device and prompt. Record the manufacturer and exact model, then determine whether the message asks for a setup or administrator password, a boot or system password, or a drive/storage password. Different credentials can have different recovery options. ASUS’s password descriptions and Dell’s recovery guidance illustrate why the distinction matters.
- If it is a work-managed computer, contact your IT administrator. The organization may hold the firmware credential or manage configuration centrally. Do not guess, share, or change a fleet password outside your organization’s approved process.
- If it is your personal device, contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider. Use the support page for your device and follow its model-specific instructions. ASUS directs users who have lost a BIOS/security password to product support or an authorized repair center; service charges may apply under its warranty terms. Check ASUS’s current support guidance.
- Be ready to verify ownership and model details. Dell says its support process may require the model, Service Tag, and proof of ownership. Its available recovery options differ by model: some supported desktops may have a jumper option, while laptops may require support. Hardware replacement may be necessary if recovery is not possible. See Dell’s model-dependent instructions.
Do not count on removing a CMOS battery, restoring firmware defaults, or using a generic “unlock” utility to clear a supervisor password. The cited manufacturer guidance does not establish these as universal methods, and a procedure suitable for one model may not work—or may create problems—on another. Ask the manufacturer about the supported recovery path for your exact device.

For organizations managing multiple devices
Central IT teams should use their approved firmware-password and configuration-management process rather than asking employees to guess credentials or circulate them informally. Microsoft’s Intune documentation describes BIOS configuration policy management for Dell devices, including per-device BIOS password configuration and administrative role requirements. Its scope should not be generalized to every manufacturer: confirm current support and policy behavior in Microsoft’s Intune BIOS configuration documentation and the relevant OEM guidance.
