Acrobat can show which fonts a PDF uses, but Adobe’s current help pages do not document a way to save an embedded font as a separate TTF or OTF file. Its font-unembedding control removes font data from a PDF to reduce the file’s size; it does not extract that data into a font file.
How to identify fonts used in a PDF
- Open the PDF in Acrobat.
- On Windows, choose Menu > Document Properties > Fonts. On macOS, choose File > Document Properties > Fonts.
- Read the font names shown in the list. Record their spelling, capitalization, and hyphenation if you need to search for the typeface.
Adobe documents this panel as a way to find font names, not to export font files. A listed font name also does not establish that the PDF contains a complete copy of that font. Adobe’s Acrobat font-identification instructions were last updated September 23, 2025.

What Acrobat’s font-related features actually do
| Your goal | Acrobat feature or next step | What it does | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Identify a typeface | Document Properties > Fonts | Shows font names used in the PDF. | It does not export the underlying font file. Adobe |
| Reduce PDF size | Acrobat Pro PDF Optimizer > Fonts | Can remove embedded fonts from the PDF and save an optimized PDF. | This is unembedding, not saving fonts as separate files. Adobe |
| Prepare print output | Export to PostScript or EPS and set font inclusion options | Controls font inclusion in a print or prepress output workflow. | Adobe does not describe this as standalone font-file extraction. Adobe |
| Use the typeface in another project | Find the original font through its publisher or another properly licensed source | Provides a font intended for installation and use under its license. | The PDF may contain only a subset, and the applicable license determines permitted use. Adobe |
Unembedding is removal, not recovery
Acrobat Pro’s PDF Optimizer includes font-unembedding settings for reducing a PDF’s size. The operation removes embedded font data from the PDF; Adobe documents saving an optimized PDF, not generating a TTF, OTF, or other standalone font file. Do not use this option if your goal is to obtain the font.
PostScript and EPS export serve print workflows
Acrobat’s PostScript/EPS export includes font-inclusion controls, but Adobe presents the feature for printing and prepress conversion. Those controls do not amount to a documented method for exporting a font as a reusable font file.

Why a PDF may not contain a complete font
When a font is embedded, a PDF can contain either the full font or a subset containing only the characters used in the document. A subset may not include additional letters, symbols, or other glyphs needed for a different project. The displayed font name alone cannot tell you that the full typeface is present.
Embedding is also subject to the font vendor’s permissions. Adobe says a font can be embedded only when the vendor’s setting permits it. If a recipient does not have a font that could not be embedded, Acrobat or Distiller may substitute another; the replacement may not match the original character shapes. Substitution may also fail to work cleanly for some languages or encodings. See Adobe’s guide to font embedding and substitution and its language-support notes.

How to get a font for a new project
Use the name from Acrobat’s Fonts panel to locate the original typeface through its publisher or a properly licensed source. Check the font’s license before installing it or using it in new work. A font’s presence in a PDF—or permission for that font to be embedded there—does not by itself establish permission to extract, install, distribute, or reuse the font software. Adobe’s product documentation describes embedding controls but does not decide the rights granted by an individual font license.

Does any Acrobat version have a font-extraction feature?
The current Adobe help pages cited here document font identification, embedding and substitution, unembedding for PDF optimization, and PostScript/EPS export. They do not document a workflow for saving embedded font data as a standalone file. That documentation does not establish whether an undocumented or legacy Acrobat version has such a feature, so it would be too broad to claim that no version has ever offered one.
