What is happening with the Acer Googlebook 14?
Android Authority reported that at least four Reddit users said their Acer Googlebook 14 repeatedly displayed an “Updating” screen, restarted, and returned to the same screen. One owner described the loop after initial setup. Another said the recovery screen indicated there was no internet partition and that USB recovery was the only option they could use, but they could not find the needed recovery files. These are user accounts, not verified diagnostics.

Start with official support
For a device-specific problem, hardware issue, or warranty claim, Google directs owners to the manufacturer; its support page lists Acer for Acer Googlebooks. Contact Acer with the model number GP714-91N, purchase details, and a description of the repeating update screen. Android Authority said Acer had been asked for comment, but its October 8, 2026 report did not include a company response.

Check whether recovery media exists for this exact model
Google’s general recovery instructions explain how to prepare recovery media, but they do not confirm that the Device Recovery Utility currently provides an image for GP714-91N. Check the utility for the exact model before preparing a USB drive. A drive by itself does not solve the loop, and buying one does not guarantee that the required image is available.
Understand the data-loss risk before recovery
Google’s instructions call for a USB flash drive with at least 32 GB of capacity. Preparing the recovery drive erases its contents; running recovery permanently erases everything on the Googlebook’s hard drive. If files matter, ask Acer about options before proceeding, since the reported recovery path may make local data inaccessible or erase it.

Why the bootloader workaround is not a confirmed fix
Google employee Mishaal Rahman suggested disconnecting USB devices, opening the recovery menu, unlocking and then re-locking the bootloader, and choosing “boot from internal disk.” A reply in the discussion said the unlocking and locking steps failed and that the internal-disk option did not appear. The suggestion is therefore an unverified troubleshooting idea, not an established remedy.
Google’s bootloader guidance says, “Most users don’t need to unlock their Googlebook’s bootloader.” It warns that unlocking erases device data and disables device security; unsupported modifications can also cause hardware, software, or security problems and may void warranty. Given those consequences and the lack of a confirmed fix, consult Acer before attempting bootloader changes.
