This is an editorial ranking of story and campaign design—not an official consensus or a ranking of flight models. The best choice depends on whether you value squadron relationships, branching choices, or the feeling of fighting a war across a whole theater.
Bandai Namco describes the numbered entries as self-contained stories in Strangereal, so you do not need to play them in release or chronological order to follow each plot. Shared history adds context, but it is optional. Bandai Namco’s series overview also qualifies that not every Ace Combat title is set in Strangereal.

How this story-and-campaign ranking works
The order weighs three things: how well a game builds characters and squadron relationships; how its narrative structure or player choices shape the campaign; and how effectively missions make the conflict feel large-scale. The official game descriptions establish campaign features and premises, but they do not score story quality. The ranking below is therefore an editorial assessment, not a sourced or official verdict.

1. Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War
Ace Combat 5 takes the top spot for the way it pairs a squadron-centered story with campaign systems that make the player feel responsible for that squadron. Wardog Squadron is drawn into the escalating conflict between Osea and Yuktobania; players can select aircraft and issue orders to wingmen. Those mechanics give the campaign a direct way to connect the player’s decisions in the air with the people flying alongside them.
It is the best starting recommendation here if you want a sustained war story with a strong team focus. Its position is a judgment about the combined story and campaign, not a claim that the official catalog ranks it above other entries.

2. Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War
Zero offers a more focused war story: in 1995, Ustio defends itself against Belka, and the player flies as a Galm Team pilot alongside Solo Wing Pixy. That close partnership gives the game a clear character-and-squadron lens, while the conflict also provides useful context for Ace Combat 5.

Its placement reflects this ranking’s preference for a concentrated personal perspective within a wider war.

3. Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies
Ace Combat 04 follows the player as part of Mobius Squadron during a Usean conflict shaped by the Ulysses asteroid impact. Its official description supports a strong contrast between the pilot’s role in the squadron and the scale of a continental war; the story was written by Sunao Katabuchi.
It ranks just below Zero because this list gives extra weight to the squadron relationships and campaign structure that drive the player’s experience. Choose 04 if the combination of a personal wartime perspective and a conflict spanning a continent is what appeals to you.

4. Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere
For branching narrative, Ace Combat 3 is the standout. Set amid a near-future corporate conflict, it changes the story route according to the faction the player chooses: UPEO, General Resource, or Neucom. That structure gives players a concrete reason to revisit the campaign and see events from another side.

If replayable routes and player choice matter most, you could reasonably put it first.

5. Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown
Ace Combat 7 tells a story set during the 2019 Second Usean Continental War between Osea and Erusea. Unmanned aircraft are central to the conflict, while the campaign’s multiple squadrons broaden the view beyond a single team. Weather is also a tactical factor: Bandai Namco Europe describes lightning and icing as hazards pilots must contend with.
That mix of war-story scale and tactical campaign pressure earns it a place in the upper half. Its position reflects the balance used here; it is not a claim that its premise or setting is objectively weaker than those of the games above it.

6. Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation
Ace Combat 6 puts Garuda Team into the war between Emmeria and Estovakia. Its Dynamic Mission System presents missions as simultaneous operations, emphasizing how different parts of a battlefield can move at once.

7. Ace Combat 2
Ace Combat 2 is framed as a squadron campaign against a coup. It belongs in an all-numbered-games list, but the official description offers less story detail than those for the later entries, making a close comparison of character writing or narrative structure difficult on the available evidence.
Its place reflects the narrower story information available for comparison, not a claim that its campaign has no appeal.

8. Air Combat
As the series’ foundation, Air Combat is described in the official catalog as arcade flight combat against a terrorist force. Its story summary is also comparatively narrow, so it is harder to assess alongside later games on squadron characterization or narrative design.

9. Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve (provisional)
Ace Combat 8 is newly released, so its place here is provisional rather than a settled judgment about its story quality. Bandai Namco’s official listing gives its release date as October 2, 2026, and says the story begins in July 2029: a displaced pilot aboard the Endurance, a ship carrying refugees, is given the name of a legendary ace and tasked with helping reclaim the Federation of Central Usea from Sotoa. The listing establishes a premise, not a comparative assessment of the finished campaign.
That premise makes it a relevant new entry for story-focused players, but this ranking cannot place it confidently against the other campaigns without comparative evaluation.
Which game should you play first?
For a first story-focused choice, start with Ace Combat 5. Pick Zero instead if you prefer a more focused wartime partnership and want optional context for 5. Choose Ace Combat 04 for a personal role within a continental conflict, or Ace Combat 3 if branching routes and replayable choices matter most.

You do not need to follow chronology to understand the numbered games: Bandai Namco characterizes them as self-contained stories. Release and chronological order are different ways to approach the series, but neither is required by this story-first ranking.
Keep sales milestones separate from story quality
Bandai Namco Entertainment America reported that Ace Combat 7 had sold more than seven million units worldwide in a news item dated January 16, 2026. Bandai Namco’s series overview reports more than 20 million units for the franchise, without stating a year for that figure in the accessible page. These are sales milestones, not evidence that any one game has the best story.
If you are considering the Nintendo Switch version of Ace Combat 7, check the edition and platform before buying: Bandai Namco’s Japan product page for the Switch Deluxe Edition says the Switch version does not support flight sticks or VR and notes that DLC is sold separately.
