PowerPyx reports 52 campaign special-unit pilots and 31 optional enemy aces in ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE. Most special-unit pilots appear automatically, while optional aces are reported to require Veteran difficulty or higher and a mission-specific trigger. The guide’s roster has missing names and conditions, so it is useful as a checklist but should not be treated as a fully confirmed list of every Assault Record.
How Assault Record encounters work
The guide separates campaign records into two kinds: special-unit pilots, most of whom it says appear automatically, and optional enemy aces with individual spawn conditions. It reports that the optional aces require Veteran difficulty or higher; the official game pages do not independently confirm that threshold. The named exception to automatic special-unit appearances is the Lux Lunae 22nd Unit in Mission 28, which depends on destroying Shadow 24 in Mission 18.

According to PowerPyx’s ACE COMBAT 8 Assault Records guide, shooting down an ace records the pilot and unlocks that aircraft type’s paint scheme for campaign use. Its mission conditions below are guide-reported instructions, not developer-confirmed mechanics.

Recognize the trigger type
- Timed: complete a number of kills or destroy a target before a countdown or mission event.
- Order-dependent: destroy one target before another, or keep a specified enemy alive until the ace appears.
- Survival or clearance: preserve required units, or eliminate all targets in a category.
- Route-based: fly through a tunnel, under a bridge, or through a gap in the environment.
- Automatic: the guide lists the unit without a special trigger.
For a timed or order-dependent attempt, prioritize the stated condition over optional combat. Saving a replay or checkpoint when the game allows it is a practical precaution, not a verified spawn mechanic.

Mission-by-mission locations and triggers
The table transcribes the guide’s visible mission list. “Automatic” means the guide states no special condition for that entry. Where a unit is listed without a clear trigger, or its identity is missing, the table says so rather than filling the gap. Consult the guide for its original mission-by-mission listing and dated comments; reader comments proposing corrections are not independently confirmed.

What remains uncertain in the checklist
The guide’s headline counts are 52 special-unit pilots and 31 optional aces, but its visible listing skips Mission 14, leaves the identities of the Mission 5, 17 and 24 entries unstated, and omits explicit appearance conditions for some Mission 25 units. The Mission 5 and Mission 17 names suggested in comments are reader-proposed corrections, not confirmed entries. Do not infer that a mission omitted from the listing has no record, or that an incomplete condition is automatic.
