To inspect registry data from a Windows installation on an external drive, load one of that installation’s hive files in Registry Editor. Find the drive letter Windows assigned in your current session, open the relevant file in WindowsSystem32config, and mount it temporarily under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. Unload the hive when you finish. This lets you inspect the external installation’s data; it does not make that installation’s registry the active registry of the computer you are using.
Find the external Windows installation and its hive files
Connect the drive and wait for Windows to recognize it. Identify its current drive letter in File Explorer or Disk Management, then locate the installation’s WindowsSystem32config directory. The letter can change between normal Windows and Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), so verify it in the environment where you are working. Microsoft’s offline troubleshooting example treats the operating-system drive letter as a path variable rather than assuming it is C: (Microsoft’s offline SYSTEM hive workflow).

Common hive files in that directory include SYSTEM, SOFTWARE, SAM, SECURITY, and DEFAULT. Choose the file that matches the data you need; loading a different hive will show a different section of the offline registry (Microsoft’s overview of registry hives).
Load and inspect the hive in Registry Editor
- Open Registry Editor. Select
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINEin the left pane. - Choose File > Load Hive.
- Browse to the external installation’s
WindowsSystem32configdirectory, select the hive file you need (for example,SYSTEM), and open it. - When prompted, enter a unique temporary name, such as
OfflineSYSTEM. - Expand
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINEand browse under the temporary key, for exampleHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINEOfflineSYSTEM.
Microsoft documents this Load Hive workflow for working with an offline registry file (Remotely edit the registry). The temporary key is a mount point in the Registry Editor you opened, not a switch to the external installation’s active registry.

Unload the hive when finished
In Registry Editor, select the temporary key you created and choose File > Unload Hive. Unloading removes the temporarily loaded registry section. Do this before closing Registry Editor (Microsoft’s reg unload reference).
Use commands instead of the graphical interface
For a repeatable or command-line workflow, Microsoft documents reg load and reg unload. Replace the example drive letter and temporary key with the values you verified on your computer:

reg load HKLMOfflineSYSTEM E:WindowsSystem32configSYSTEM
reg unload HKLMOfflineSYSTEM
reg load <keyname> <filename> loads a hive file under the specified key; reg unload <keyname> removes it. Microsoft lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 as applicable to the reg load command and documents the matching reg unload command. Verify both the file path and temporary key before running either command.

Protect the registry and handle access problems separately
If you only need to inspect data, avoid changing values. Microsoft warns, “Don’t edit the registry directly unless you have no alternative,” and says to back it up first if direct editing is necessary. Incorrect changes can damage the system and may require reinstalling Windows (Microsoft’s reg unload guidance).

If the drive is unreadable, encrypted, damaged, or does not contain the expected Windows directory, loading a hive will not resolve that separate drive-access or recovery issue. First establish that the target files are accessible; the hive procedure applies to an accessible Windows installation.
