If your air conditioner or heat pump has stopped and its condensate float switch is tripped, the switch may be responding to water backing up in the drain system. It can interrupt or signal HVAC operation to help prevent an overflow. Check the accessible drain-pan area for standing water before attempting a reset; a trip does not, by itself, prove that the drain is clogged or the switch is faulty.
What a tripped condensate float switch means
As your system cools, it produces condensate that should drain away. A float switch changes state when water reaches its trip level, potentially stopping equipment or sending a signal that leads to a shutdown. This can limit further condensate production while the water condition is addressed. Trane notes that a potential overflow can shut down the outdoor compressor or condenser fan and the supply fan, depending on the system. Trane’s air-handler overflow switch guidance distinguishes a float switch, which responds to a rising water level, from a sensor switch that responds to a small amount of water.

Not every air handler has an overflow switch, and its location varies. It may be installed in or near a drain pan or elsewhere along the condensate path. A sudden shutdown can be associated with a blocked drain or a pan holding water, but other causes are possible; the switch may also need inspection.
What to check before resetting it
Limit your inspection to parts you can see and reach safely. Do not open electrical panels, touch wiring, or reach into wet equipment. If water is near electrical components, leaking through a ceiling, or beyond your safe access—or if you are unsure how the drain is routed—stop and contact an HVAC professional.

- Look for standing water in an accessible condensate pan and visible water or debris near the drain outlet.
- Check whether the switch’s visible float appears obstructed by debris or scale. Do not force it.
- Note whether water is actively leaking or the shutdown recurs after the system is restarted.
Some switch-specific instructions describe cleaning, but the method depends on the model. For example, the Asurity CS-1 instructions provide cleaning and troubleshooting guidance for that switch and caution against certain harsh chemicals and abrasive tools. Do not apply those directions to a different model.
How to test the switch
There is no universal homeowner test. Manufacturer procedures show why the equipment manual matters: one Enviro-Tec procedure says to lift the float with the unit on and verify that the unit stops if the switch is correctly wired; it also calls for confirming that the switch stops operation before the pan overflows. Johnson Controls’ Premier rooftop-unit guide describes a functional check that includes lifting the switch and checking for shutdown and an alarm, then restoring normal operation. These are equipment-specific maintenance procedures, not instructions to test any HVAC system by trial and error.

- Versatile Sizing: Available in a variety of sizes to perfectly fit your HVAC system, washing machine, or electric water heater, ensuring optimal performance and protection against water damage.
- Customizable Options: Choose between pans with or without pre-drilled holes, tailored to meet your specific installation needs for any application.
- Efficient Condensate Management: Designed to effectively collect and channel away condensation, preventing leaks and protecting your home or business from potential water damage.
- Easy Installation: Thoughtfully engineered for a hassle-free installation, these pans are suitable for residential and commercial HVAC systems, washing machines, and electric water heaters.
- Enhanced Safety: Protects your property by keeping excess moisture contained, reducing the risk of mold, mildew, and structural damage.
Keep tests involving wiring, controls, or access to electrical components to a qualified person following the exact unit and switch manuals. The Johnson Controls Premier guide describes a yearly functional check for the covered rooftop units. Its procedure and interval should not be generalized to residential equipment. The separate Johnson Controls/Enviro-Tec installation manual requires power disconnection for installation and wiring according to the unit diagram.

Address any visible water or drainage problem first. Reset behavior depends on the switch and HVAC controls: some designs have a manual reset, while others resume operation when the water condition clears. Do not assume that a reset button or sequence from another model applies to yours.

Manual-reset latching switches
The Asurity BG-301+/BG-302P+T instructions describe pressing the switch’s reset button to return its float to the lower position. That is specific to those latching-switch models. Their instructions also say installation must be performed by a licensed contractor or under that contractor’s direct supervision.
Automatic restart and lockout on some commercial equipment
For the covered commercial units with Symbio 700 controls, Trane’s troubleshooting guidance says the system can restart when the optional overflow switch opens after drainage clears. It also describes a manual lockout if the switch trips a third time within a rolling 72-hour period. This behavior is specific to the systems covered by that guidance, not a general HVAC reset rule.

When to call an HVAC professional
- Water is near electrical parts, leaking into a ceiling, or inaccessible.
- The float appears stuck, damaged, or obstructed and cannot be checked safely.
- The drain appears clear but the equipment remains off, or the switch trips again after a reset.
- You cannot identify the switch or equipment model, or the next step would involve wiring, opening equipment, or bypassing a safety control.
A technician can diagnose the drain, pan, switch, and controls together. If replacement is considered, the switch must match the equipment’s mounting and electrical or control requirements; manufacturer documents show that these details differ. Do not bypass the switch to keep the system running.
