For a first playthrough, Summer Intern is the safest starting job. Undated community guides list it with 12 trait points and no forced drawback, bonus, or starting item, giving you the most freedom to shape a build. Choose Lab Assistant if you already want a stealth-oriented solo character: the commonly published values are +3 Sprinting, +3 Sneaking, +2 Strength, and 10 trait points. Defense Analyst is generally a poor beginner choice because guides describe it as having few trait points and a forced Slow Learner trait.
Abiotic Factor’s job and trait numbers have varied between guides and may have changed with balance patches. Treat the figures below as reported reference values, then verify the character-creation screen in your current build before spending points.

How jobs and traits work
Your job determines the initial shape of a character, while traits let you spend a limited point budget on advantages and disadvantages. The job is selected during character creation, and traits are chosen at the same time. A job with more unassigned points is not automatically stronger than one with useful skills: it is a choice between flexibility and an immediately defined playstyle.

Most recommendations fall along three decisions: how much control you want over the build, whether you expect to avoid enemies or fight them, and whether you are covering a role for a co-op group. The game supports one to six players, so a job that feels comfortable alone may be less valuable when a teammate already fills the same role.

Choosing your first job
Summer Intern: the flexible default
Summer Intern is the usual first-timer recommendation because the reported 12-point budget is higher than that of normal jobs and comes without a compulsory negative trait. The listing also reports no skill, experience, crafting, or starting-item bonus. That sounds unexciting, but it means you are not paying for a bonus you will never use and can build around the threats you actually encounter.
Use this job when you are learning the facility, unsure whether you will sneak or fight, or playing with friends whose roles may change from session to session. Spend the points on general comfort first, then specialize after you understand stamina, carrying space, injuries, and the value of avoiding combat. A flexible start also makes it easier to test the game without committing your character to a narrow plan.

Lab Assistant is the clearest solo-oriented alternative in the guides. Its reported bonuses to Sprinting and Sneaking support moving through dangerous rooms, while Strength helps with physical tasks and close-range survival. The lower 10-point budget is the price of receiving those starting bonuses.
Pick it if your intended loop is scouting, collecting resources, opening routes, and slipping past enemies rather than clearing every room. Stealth is especially useful when you are alone, because an avoided fight costs no durability, healing supplies, or time. In a group, coordinate first: a teammate who wants to fight everything may make the stealth bonuses less central to the party’s plan.

Epimedical Bionomicist: a co-op support option
One guide identifies Epimedical Bionomicist as the strongest early medic for co-op. The available material does not establish a consistent list of starting numbers, so choose it for the role rather than for a claimed exact bonus. It makes the most sense when another player is taking a combat or exploration job and someone needs to concentrate on keeping the group operational.
Discuss responsibilities before starting. A support character is useful only if the team actually shares injuries, supplies, and medical tasks. If you are playing alone, the job’s co-op emphasis may not provide the same value as the broad Summer Intern budget or Lab Assistant’s movement and stealth bonuses.

Defense Analyst: why beginners usually skip it
Beginner guides consistently warn against Defense Analyst because it reportedly supplies few trait points and imposes Slow Learner. Slow Learner is also listed among the traits to avoid generally. With fewer points available, you have less room to offset a compulsory disadvantage, and the character can feel weaker while you are still learning basic systems.
There is no reason to select it merely because its name sounds combat-focused. Choose it only if the current in-game description has changed or you deliberately want the constraint for a challenge run.

Trans-Kinematic Researcher: verify before committing
TheGamer selects Trans-Kinematic Researcher as an overall pick in some circumstances, tying the choice to difficulty and whether the session is single-player or multiplayer. Other guides give slightly different figures. Because the numbers are not settled, inspect the live tooltip and compare its actual point budget and bonuses with Summer Intern and Lab Assistant before confirming.
Traits: advantages, drawbacks and point discipline
Traits are selected during character creation. They are not a cosmetic label: they change the pressures you feel while carrying equipment, gaining experience, taking injuries, or entering combat. Spend points on a plan you can describe in one sentence, such as “avoid fights and carry more supplies” or “stay close and win melee encounters.” Do not buy a drawback simply to fund a benefit you will rarely trigger.
Comfort and general-purpose positives
- Fanny Pack: commonly recommended for solo players as a comfort choice. Its appeal is practical inventory convenience during repeated scavenging trips.
- Wrinkly Brainmeat: guides describe it as providing 20% more experience and pair it with Summer Intern as an all-rounder combination. Because the value is from undated third-party material, confirm the current tooltip.
- Thick Skinned: described as reducing the chance of bleeding injuries, making it a defensive option for players who expect mistakes or frequent close encounters.
- Self Defense: recommended for a melee-heavy approach. It suits a player who intends to solve problems at close range rather than rely on stealth.
Drawbacks to approach carefully
- Fear of Violence: guides describe it as severely limiting combat. That can make unavoidable encounters much harder, especially before you know enemy routes and resource locations.
- Slow Learner: listed as a trait to avoid and also reported as Defense Analyst’s forced drawback. A slower progression rate is particularly punishing while you are still unlocking the game’s systems.
Respec is available, but guides agree that it carries a penalty and do not establish the penalty’s current details. Treat your first selection as meaningful: use a respec only after reading the current confirmation screen and understanding exactly what will be lost.
Three sensible starting builds
Learn-the-game build
- Choose Summer Intern.
- Take Fanny Pack if inventory friction is your main concern.
- Use the remaining points for a broad defensive or progression-oriented combination shown in your current trait list.
- Avoid Fear of Violence and Slow Learner while you are learning combat and exploration.
This build keeps the job flexible and avoids forcing you into a specialist role before you know which systems matter most to you.
Solo stealth build
- Choose Lab Assistant for the reported Sprinting, Sneaking, and Strength bonuses.
- Add Fanny Pack if long solo scavenging runs are more important to you than direct damage.
- Favor movement, concealment, and injury prevention over traits that require frequent melee exchanges.
- Plan routes around bypassing enemies; stealth is a resource-saving strategy, not merely a way to start fights later.
Co-op support build
- Consider Epimedical Bionomicist if your group needs an early medic.
- Agree on who will gather, who will fight, and who will manage treatment before selecting traits.
- Do not duplicate a specialist role automatically; the best party is usually the one that covers different problems.
Difficulty and preparation before leaving the starting area
A beginner guide suggests Easy or Medium difficulty for newcomers. Select the lower setting if you want to learn crafting, power, and quest navigation without making every mistake expensive; select Medium if you already understand survival-crafting conventions and want more pressure.

Regardless of difficulty, establish a repeatable routine before pushing deep into the facility:
- Gather basic resources: collect materials whenever you move through a safe area rather than waiting until a recipe blocks progress.
- Build a shelter: create a dependable place to store supplies and regroup. A shelter turns every expedition into a recoverable trip instead of a one-way gamble.
- Purify water: unsafe water can cause illness. Purify it and boil it before drinking.
- Place respawn beds: put beds where a death will save you a meaningful journey, not merely wherever the first room happens to be.
These steps are more valuable than rushing the first objective with an empty inventory. The facility rewards short, repeatable trips while you learn its layout.

The following sequence is the route described by beginner walkthroughs. Room layouts and object locations can differ between versions, so use the objective text and nearby landmarks if a door or NPC is not exactly where a guide places it.
- Speak with Dr. Thule. He is the first NPC encountered in a new game. Finish the conversation so the opening objective is registered.
- Open crafting. Press
Cto open the crafting menu. - Place a Crafting Bench. Build it near a power socket. Positioning it close to power is important for the next craft rather than a cosmetic preference.
- Craft an Energy Brick. Use the bench and make the Energy Brick required by the opening objective.
- Power the cafeteria door. Take the Energy Brick to the cafeteria door and use it there. If the interaction does not appear, check that the bench is powered and that you are targeting the door’s power point.
- Take the map. After the door objective, collect the map so you can navigate the next section.
- Talk to the security guard. The guard advances the opening sequence and points you toward the next route.
- Return through the portal. Jump through the portal back to Office Sector Level 3.
- Cross the Executive Offices. Move through this area toward Silo 3 rather than wandering into deeper rooms without supplies.
- Speak with Dr. Mayfield. At Silo 3, talk to Dr. Mayfield to receive the next objective.
Getting power cells for Silo 3
Walkthroughs describe the next technical step as crafting a Controller from a Computation Brick. The brick is obtained by defeating a Security Bot CPU that roams the lab at night. This is the first point where preparation and job choice intersect: a stealth character can spend more time avoiding patrols, while a melee-focused character may choose to confront the bot when supplies and healing are ready.

- Find the Security Bot CPU. Guides place it in the lab and specify that it roams at night. Search methodically instead of assuming it will stand in one fixed spot.
- Defeat the bot and collect the Computation Brick. Confirm the item is in your inventory before leaving the lab.
- Craft the Controller. Use the Computation Brick in the appropriate recipe.
- Use the Controller for the Silo 3 power-cell objective. Follow the current objective marker or interaction prompt if the placement differs from the walkthrough.
A separate progression note says Energy Bricks power doors in Level 2 and that a Keypad Hacker can come from NPC Alice or from looting Security Bot CPUs. That information is reported with low confidence, so treat it as a lead to test in your own build, not as a guaranteed drop or quest reward.
How to avoid common early mistakes
Spending every point on a narrow fantasy
A character built entirely for combat can still need to carry supplies, cross hazardous rooms, and recover from injuries. If you do not yet know how often a bonus will matter, keep more points available for general comfort. Summer Intern is designed for this learning period; a specialist job is better once you know what you want to repeat.
Drinking untreated water
Water collection is not the same as safe hydration. Purify and boil water before drinking it. Illness at the start of an expedition can consume the supplies and time you needed for the objective.
Putting beds in useless locations
A respawn bed is a route-planning tool. Place one near a useful, defensible staging area so a death does not send you back across already-cleared rooms.
Fighting every enemy
Solo guides specifically recommend sneaking past enemies when possible. Combat costs health, durability, and consumables; an encounter that gives no required item is often better treated as an obstacle to bypass.
Assuming a guide’s room layout is permanent
Quest walkthroughs are based on observed game layouts and may differ after updates. If an NPC or door is missing, verify the objective, inspect nearby rooms, and check whether a prerequisite conversation or item interaction was skipped.
What to verify in your current build
No publisher-maintained job or trait table was identified for the figures quoted here, and guides disagree on some values. Before confirming a character, read the in-game panel for:
- the exact number of unspent trait points;
- every automatic skill, experience, crafting, or inventory bonus;
- any forced positive or negative trait;
- the current respec warning and its penalty;
- the objective text and interaction requirements for the opening quests.
If the live description conflicts with an older guide, follow the game client. In particular, verify Wrinkly Brainmeat’s experience percentage, Lab Assistant’s three bonuses, Defense Analyst’s Slow Learner requirement, and Trans-Kinematic Researcher’s values before building around them.
