Yangtze Memory Technologies (YMTC) became the world’s third-largest NAND flash supplier by bits shipped in the second quarter of 2026, according to Counterpoint’s tracker as reported by Tom’s Hardware. YMTC held 14% of global shipments, behind Samsung at 25% and SK hynix at 22%, narrowly pushing Kioxia out of the shipment top three.
What the No. 3 ranking actually measures
The ranking is based on NAND bits shipped, not sales revenue, profit or the number of finished SSDs sold. That distinction is important because the fastest-growing part of the market is enterprise storage for AI servers and hyperscale data centers.

Enterprise SSDs accounted for 48% of global NAND bits shipped in Q2 2026, up from 26% a year earlier. Enterprise drives generally generate more revenue per bit than consumer storage, so a supplier can rank highly on shipped capacity without ranking as highly on revenue. Counterpoint placed YMTC fifth by NAND revenue even as it entered the shipment top three.
The figures were summarized in Counterpoint’s August 12, 2026 headline, “Server-Led eSSDs Hit 48% of NAND Shipments; YMTC Enters Global Top Three.”

How YMTC moved ahead of Kioxia
Fast shipment growth
YMTC’s NAND shipments increased 22% year over year and 5% from the previous quarter. That growth was enough to give it 14% of worldwide bits shipped in Q2 2026. Kioxia grew more slowly, allowing YMTC to take the third-place shipment position.
A larger 3D NAND roadmap
YMTC was mass-producing 267-layer 3D NAND with its Xtacking architecture and developing devices with more than 300 layers. More layers can increase the amount of storage produced from a wafer, but layer count alone does not prove that a manufacturer matches its rivals on yield, endurance, qualification or cost. The available figures establish process expansion, not technical parity.

How the leading suppliers compare
| Supplier | Q2 2026 global NAND shipment share | Revenue position or context | Enterprise and technology context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Samsung | 25% | Shipment leader; revenue percentage not stated | Shipment share fell from 32% in Q2 2024 as Samsung emphasized higher-margin DRAM; NAND layer generation not stated |
| SK hynix | 22% | Second by bits shipped; revenue percentage not stated | Benefited from a 40% quarter-over-quarter increase in Solidigm bit shipments tied to server demand; NAND layer generation not stated |
| YMTC | 14% | Fifth by NAND revenue in the same report | Consumer-heavy output, 267-layer NAND in mass production and devices above 300 layers under development |
| Kioxia | Below YMTC in Q2 2026 shipment ranking | Lost the third-place shipment position after slower growth; revenue details not stated | Enterprise and layer-generation details not stated in the cited report |
These percentages describe one quarter’s global bit shipments. They should not be read as market capitalization, total company revenue or a forecast of full-year share.

Why AI servers changed the NAND market
AI infrastructure uses large pools of fast storage for training data, checkpoints, model files and inference workloads. As those deployments expanded, enterprise SSDs became the largest single destination for NAND bits in the quarter. Counterpoint expects enterprise SSDs to exceed half of global NAND bits by the end of 2026.

- HIGH-OCTANE GAMING. Experience speeds up to 7,250MB/s read and 6,900MB/s write (1-2TB models), with up to 35% faster performance than previous generation.
- PURPOSE-BUILT. Designed for serious on-the-go gamers, with a PCIe Gen4 interface and SANDISK’s next generation TLC 3D NAND.
- MORE TIME TO CLEAR THAT CHECKPOINT. Built with laptops and handheld gaming devices in mind, with up to 100% more power efficiency over the previous generation.
- DO MORE WITH DASHBOARD. Ensure your drive is optimized for prime performance with the downloadable WD_BLACK Dashboard (Windows only).
That mix shift changes the competitive test. Suppliers need validated firmware, predictable endurance, consistent quality and approval from server makers and hyperscalers, not only high wafer output. SK hynix’s result reflects that demand: Solidigm bit shipments rose 40% quarter over quarter as server orders increased.
What limits YMTC’s access to that growth
The U.S. added YMTC to its Entity List in December 2022. The restriction limits the company’s access to parts of the U.S.-linked supply chain and makes qualification with Western server customers more difficult. It does not remove all demand for YMTC NAND, but it narrows the addressable market for enterprise products.

For now, China’s domestic market and consumer storage remain YMTC’s principal channels. The company plans to shift more of its product mix toward enterprise SSDs in the second half of 2026. Success will depend not just on making 267-layer parts, but on securing design wins, qualification and reliable volume in markets that are affected by export controls.
Does the ranking mean SSD prices will fall?
Not by itself. A 14% shipment share adds supply to the NAND market, but retail prices also reflect total industry production, inventory, controller and assembly costs, contract terms and the balance between consumer and enterprise orders. Because enterprise SSD demand is absorbing an increasing share of bits, strong shipments can coexist with firm pricing for some products.

YMTC’s expansion could add competitive pressure, particularly in China’s consumer-storage market, but the Q2 ranking does not provide enough information to quantify a price cut or predict prices in a specific country.
Can consumers buy a YMTC SSD?
YMTC’s consumer-heavy output means its NAND can reach consumer storage, including drives sold under brands that do not prominently identify the flash supplier. However, the Q2 shipment report does not verify a particular retail model, regional listing or current stock position.
- Check the drive maker’s current specification for the NAND supplier rather than assuming it from the brand name.
- Confirm the model number and firmware revision, since manufacturers can change components during a product’s life.
- Compare warranty, endurance rating, controller and independent testing alongside the NAND vendor.
Those checks matter because the same NAND generation can perform differently depending on controller firmware, overprovisioning and the rest of the drive design.

What to watch through the rest of 2026
- Whether enterprise SSDs pass 50% of global NAND bits shipped by year-end, as Counterpoint expects.
- Whether YMTC converts its planned eSSD mix shift into server qualifications and sustained orders.
- Whether production beyond 300 layers improves usable output, not merely the announced layer count.
- Whether Samsung’s continued focus on DRAM changes its NAND share further.
- Whether Kioxia’s slower growth persists or allows it to regain the shipment position.
