To correct or change the name on Aadhaar, visit an Aadhaar enrolment centre with an acceptable proof document showing the name you want recorded. Where to request an Aadhaar name correction
UIDAI directs residents to an enrolment centre for a minor name correction or a change to a new name. Its online update guidance covers address and document updates, not name changes. Check that the centre you choose provides the service you need, and use UIDAI’s current service information at UIDAI’s Aadhaar update page.

UIDAI’s 2026 amendment says the name shown on the supporting document is replicated in Aadhaar. Before submitting the request, check that the document bears the exact name you want, including spelling and the local-language rendering if applicable. The amendment also requires consistency across submitted Proof of Identity (PoI), Proof of Relationship (PoR) and Proof of Date of Birth (PDB) documents where those proofs are provided.

For a spelling or transliteration correction, bring acceptable proof that shows the correct version. For a new legal name, use proof that reflects the changed name and appears on UIDAI’s current accepted-document list. The relevant document requirements can vary with the request; UIDAI’s FAQ addresses how to change a first or full name and which documents are needed.
Marriage-related name changes and date-of-birth proof
UIDAI’s 2026 amendment includes a specific provision for a woman who changed her name after marriage: pre-marriage documents may be accepted as date-of-birth proof for a date-of-birth update if there is evidence linking the old and new names. The examples given include Aadhaar bearing the old name or a marriage certificate showing both names.

This provision concerns date-of-birth proof. It does not establish that a marriage certificate alone is always sufficient to change the Aadhaar name. For a name update, check the current accepted-document list and bring proof that satisfies UIDAI’s requirements for the name being requested.
Know the two-update limit—and what to do if you have reached it
UIDAI’s Aadhaar Handbook for Residents 2026 states: “Name can be updated twice.” A routine name correction or name change therefore uses one of the two ordinary updates.

UIDAI describes an exception route for someone who needs another correction after reaching the limit: submit a request at an enrolment centre, then seek exception processing through UIDAI’s help channel with the latest URN or EID and supporting documents. However, UIDAI listed a new “Standard operating Procedure (SOP) to be followed for updating name in Aadhaar” on 18 September 2026, and its detailed text was not available in the information cited here. Confirm the current steps with UIDAI before making an exception request; do not assume older instructions still apply. UIDAI’s FAQ also covers what to do after reaching the name-change limit.

UIDAI’s published centre fee schedule lists ₹75 for a demographic update made on its own. The demographic update is free when done along with a biometric update. Because fees can change, check the amount displayed at the centre and on your acknowledgement slip when you submit the request.

Keep the acknowledgement and its URN or EID. UIDAI’s exception guidance refers to these numbers for follow-up. The sources cited here do not establish a guaranteed processing time for a name update, so avoid relying on an assumed turnaround.
