Xavier Marquis, the original creative director of Rainbow Six Siege and creative director of March of Giants, says he chose the MOBA genre because he wanted another difficult creative challenge—not because he has promised to reproduce Siege’s success. His new game is a free-to-play, 4v4 MOBA built around commandable soldiers, battlefield structures and a fantastical setting inspired by the First World War.
Why Marquis moved from Siege to a MOBA
In an October 1, 2026 interview with Dot Esports, Marquis described the feeling of reaching his ambitions after Rainbow Six Siege became a successful competitive game. “I was looking for adrenaline, and adrenaline comes from something very difficult to do. So immediately I thought MOBA. But how?” he said.

That is a story about seeking a demanding new design problem, not a claim that March of Giants will match Siege commercially. Ubisoft’s stated ambition is to build a distinctive competitive live game that could attract new audiences; its acquisition announcement does not establish that the game has achieved that outcome.
What March of Giants is
Ubisoft describes March of Giants as a free-to-play 4v4 MOBA set in a fantastical world inspired by the First World War. Players take the role of Giants, direct smaller Soldier units and deploy Battleworks—structures and units intended to alter the battlefield.

The setting grew from a genre convention. Marquis told Dot Esports that MOBA lane creeps repeatedly advance and die around the middle of a lane, an image that reminded him of positional warfare in World War I. Ubisoft’s announced design builds on that idea with trenches, bunkers and other battlefield elements rather than presenting a conventional fantasy arena.

Soldiers give players another layer of control
Soldiers can scout, gather resources, capture targets, attack Giants and assault fortifications, according to Ubisoft Montréal. They are not only background waves: the design gives players ways to direct units toward pressure and objectives while they control their own Giant.

Battleworks can reshape lanes
Players can place structures such as trenches and bunkers to change the lane and influence combat. Ubisoft says a destroyed placement location cannot be reused, making the terrain’s history part of the match rather than a resettable building slot. The developers’ earlier account of the game’s design likewise presents Soldiers as a way to create pressure and take objectives, and Battleworks as deployable structures that change combat and terrain.
Four-player teams and Bastion objectives
The Dot Esports preview describes straight lanes, 4v4 teams and a goal of destroying two enemy Bastions. Marquis said the smaller team size is intended to reduce matchmaking waits and the number of players needed to form most of a team while retaining strategic depth. At the preview event, ranked mode was still in development; that does not establish its current status or eventual availability.

How it differs from established MOBAs
The announced design gives March of Giants several points of contrast with the genre’s established games. These are design and format distinctions, not evidence about balance, player retention or competitive success.

Why Ubisoft calls the MOBA market difficult to enter
Ubisoft Montréal frames League of Legends and Dota 2 as dominant and says no new title had established a place alongside them in the preceding 15 years. That is the studio’s characterization of the market, not an independently audited history. Its proposed answer is differentiation: a distinct setting, directly commandable units and terrain that can change during a match.

Laure Guilbert, product marketing manager at Ubisoft Montréal, acknowledged the challenge: “Our perspective is that, yes, MOBA is a difficult genre to break into,” she said, adding, “But there’s room for a different and innovative experience.” Ubisoft’s December 2025 acquisition announcement also reported that 98% of closed-alpha participants surveyed said the game brought something new to the genre. That is a company-reported survey result, not evidence that the broader market will adopt the game.

As of Ubisoft Montréal’s October 2026 announcement, a public test was planned for October 7–18, 2026, with interested players directed to the game’s Steam page to request access during the test period. Ubisoft also said additional sessions were planned for winter and spring, with early access planned for summer 2027. These are announced plans, not guarantees; the October test dates should be checked against the current Steam listing because the schedule may change.
What remains unproven
March of Giants is still in development, and the cited material describes its design, test plans and studio ambitions rather than independent player outcomes. Ubisoft Montréal says Rainbow Six Siege had captivated more than 80 million players, but its October 2026 article does not define that measure or give a measurement date. It should not be read as a directly comparable benchmark for a new game.
Ubisoft’s acquisition announcement relayed an industry-analyst forecast that global MOBA market revenues could roughly double by 2030, but it did not name the analysts or provide a methodology. That projection describes a market opportunity as presented by Ubisoft; it cannot show that March of Giants will succeed within it.
