When one AI agent calls another, a circuit breaker is a caller-side policy that can stop repeated requests to an unhealthy remote agent. It can fail fast or direct the caller to a deliberately designed alternative while the dependency recovers. It does not come built into A2A: the protocol defines how agents communicate and manage tasks, while the application decides when to open the breaker, what to retry, and what result to return.
What changes at an agent-to-agent boundary?
The remote agent is an independent system. A2A is designed to let agents discover capabilities, negotiate what they can do, and exchange tasks or results without exposing their internal memory, tools, or proprietary logic. That makes the other agent an external dependency: the caller cannot assume it can inspect or control the callee’s internals, and must manage failures at the boundary. A2A’s specification describes this communication model.

The protocol is not the resilience policy. A2A specifies communication and task-management mechanisms; it does not prescribe breaker thresholds, timeout budgets, retry rules, breaker-state scope, or fallback behavior. Those choices belong to the application.

A circuit breaker monitors qualifying failures or timeouts and changes how the caller treats a dependency. The familiar states are closed, open, and half-open: calls flow while closed; while open, the caller rejects or short-circuits requests; and in half-open, a limited recovery check is allowed. Exact thresholds and transitions are implementation decisions, not A2A requirements. AWS Prescriptive Guidance explains the circuit-breaker pattern.

A breaker is not a retry loop. A bounded retry with backoff may help with a transient fault; a breaker suppresses repeated calls once the dependency appears unhealthy. They can be used together, but retries should stop when the caller’s overall deadline is exhausted and should only be used when repeating the operation is safe. AWS’s retry and backoff guidance discusses coordinating retries with failure handling.
Nor does a breaker judge whether a successful answer is true, safe, or useful. It addresses availability and repeated-call behavior. Semantic evaluation requires separate application checks.

How an A2A call can fail without the task failing
A2A communication, in the cited specification, uses HTTP(S) and JSON-RPC 2.0; supported methods can stream updates through server-sent events. These transport details are distinct from the task’s business outcome. A response at the transport layer does not by itself establish that the task completed successfully. The A2A specification covers its transport and message format.

A local wait timeout is therefore not proof that the remote operation did not finish: the client may have timed out while the task continued. Preserve the task identifier where available and reconcile the task’s status before deciding whether to submit the work again. A2A’s task lifecycle and asynchronous-update mechanisms provide the relevant protocol context.

- 【Protect the System from Electrical Damage】: These 12 volt circuit breakers are designed for protecting your boat trolling motor or vehicles from overload and short-circuit damage, prevents excessive current between battery and device for the great amp protection.
- 【Manual Reset Function】: Unique disconnect button & long handle resettable lever make the fuse circuit breaker become reusable and controllable. This 60A DC breaker will trip when the system is over-current by reset lever automatically pop out to terminate the power, and reset by pushing the reset bar back for reuse. Can be used as a Kill Switch.
- 【Made with Reliable Material】: Durable heat-resistant plastic housing and silicone insulating cap for safer use. Pure copper washers for expanding the contact area of the wire lugs, increase the conductivity and better performance.
- 【Easy Surface-Mount】: Bolipoeq 12v dc circuit breaker is surface-mount design, simply mount them on panel or firewall, hassle-free installation. What you get: 2 x auto 60 amp Breaker, 4 x Wire Lugs, 8 x Washers, 6 x Mounting Screws.
Decide which failures count
Not every unsuccessful task means the remote dependency is unavailable. Classify errors before allowing them to affect breaker state. Connection failures and timeouts are plausible availability signals; some remote errors may also qualify, depending on their meaning. An invalid request, authorization failure, rejected task, or valid business response saying the agent cannot do the work may call for a different response rather than an open circuit. AWS describes failures and timeouts as breaker triggers but does not supply a universal classifier for agent tasks.
For long-running work, distinguish a failed exchange from a task that is still running or whose outcome is unknown. A caller-side wait limit may end the local wait, but should not be treated as proof that the remote agent stopped.

Set deadlines and retries around the task
Use a deadline for the whole delegated operation, then fit connection, response, and task-wait limits within it. There is no universal timeout value established for A2A calls; choose limits that suit the task and caller’s own service expectations.
Retry only when the operation is safe to repeat and enough of the overall deadline remains. Keep retries bounded and use backoff to avoid adding load during an outage. For an operation that creates a task, determine how the client can identify or reconcile the original task before retrying; otherwise, a repeat request could create duplicate work. That reconciliation is an application design concern, not a guarantee made by A2A.

Choose the breaker policy deliberately
| Decision | Options | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Breaker scope | Per remote agent, endpoint, or dependency class | A broad scope can let one unhealthy dependency affect unrelated work; a narrow scope can isolate failures more precisely. A2A does not require a particular scope. |
| Failure classification | Transport failures and timeouts; selected remote errors; or a broader set of task failures | Count failures that indicate dependency availability, not simply every task that fails to produce the requested result. |
| Retry policy | No retry, bounded retry with backoff, or asynchronous resumption | Retries can help with transient faults but add latency and load. Task semantics determine whether repeating or resuming is appropriate. |
| Open-state behavior | Fail fast, use an alternate agent, or provide a task-specific fallback | The caller must make the outcome clear and avoid presenting unverified, stale, or partial output as completed work. |
| Recovery check | Timed half-open probe or another controlled health signal | A limited check can test recovery without sending unrestricted traffic to a service that may still be unhealthy. |
| State location | In-process or coordinated across caller replicas | Local state is isolated to a process; sharing state across replicas adds coordination and consistency concerns. A2A leaves this to the implementation. |
Define what the caller returns when the circuit is open
An open breaker is useful only if the application has an honest outcome for the user or upstream caller. It can return a clear temporary-unavailable result, route to an approved alternate agent, or invoke a constrained fallback suited to the task. A fallback is not automatically equivalent to the remote agent’s output or actions: validate it independently, and label incomplete or alternate results rather than silently treating them as the original task’s completed answer.
Keep observability and security separate
Useful operational records can include the remote dependency identity, task identifier when available, breaker state transition, failure or timeout category, retry count, and fallback decision. Avoid recording secrets or unnecessary user context. These are engineering recommendations, not fields mandated by A2A.
A circuit breaker limits repeated calls; it does not authenticate a peer, authorize a task, or protect network traffic. Those controls need their own design. For example, Google Cloud documents private-networking patterns that use VPC networking and describe firewall and service-access controls. This is a platform-specific deployment example, not an A2A requirement.
How A2A differs from MCP
A2A and MCP address different parts of an AI system. A2A is for communication and collaboration between independent agents; MCP is commonly used to connect an AI application or agent to tools and data sources. They are not competing breaker mechanisms, and neither choice removes the need to decide how a caller handles an unavailable dependency. See the official A2A documentation for its protocol overview and discussion of the A2A/MCP relationship.
