A Website Broke in Brave? Change This Site-Specific Shields Setting

Use Brave’s site-specific Shields panel to troubleshoot a broken website without changing settings for every site.

If a website is not working in Brave, open it and click the Shields (Lion) icon in the address bar. Turn Shields down for that site, or adjust an individual protection in the panel. Brave remembers site-specific choices, so you can troubleshoot without switching browsers or changing protection for every site.

How to change Shields for a broken site

  1. Open the affected website in Brave.

  2. Click the Shields (Lion) icon in the address bar. Check that the panel identifies the site you intend to change.

  3. Choose either to turn Shields down for that site or to open the panel’s advanced controls and change an individual protection.

  4. Reload the page and check whether it works. If not, restore the previous setting or try a different individual control.

    #1 Best Overall

Brave’s Shields instructions say that site-specific changes are remembered and apply to the site in focus. They normally follow your global defaults until you change them; a site-specific choice remains even if you later change those defaults. The exact labels and layout can vary by platform or browser version, so follow the controls shown in your panel.

Approach

What changes

Trade-off

Turn Shields down for the site

Shields stops blocking content on that site that it would otherwise block.

Simple to try, but some privacy protections are disabled for that site.

Adjust an individual protection

Change a specific control in the site’s Shields panel.

More targeted, though it may take extra attempts to identify what is interfering.

Brave warns that Shields can sometimes cause sites to break. Lowering it may resolve a compatibility problem, but it is not a guaranteed fix: the setting does not establish what caused a particular site to fail.

What the individual controls do

Advanced Shields controls include protections related to trackers and ads, scripts, cookies, fingerprinting, and site data. The Brave controls guide explains these options. If you prefer to retain as much protection as possible, change one control at a time, reload, and see whether the page works before trying another.

Be especially cautious with script blocking. Many sites rely on JavaScript, and Brave notes that blocking scripts can break them. If you change that control to test a site, restore it if it does not help.

Know the privacy trade-off

Turning Shields down allows the affected page to load content that Shields might otherwise block and disables some privacy protections there. Brave recommends checking that the site is trusted before lowering Shields. The change is site-specific; it does not turn Shields off for other websites. See Brave’s Shields overview for its description of the protection.

If the site still will not work

Why Shields settings are per site

Brave’s compatibility notes describe a historical change beginning with version 1.30: by default, Brave stopped applying network-level filter-list blocking to same-site subresources. The post says users seeking the more aggressive, occasionally site-breaking behavior could choose the aggressive trackers-and-ads setting. This is version-specific context, not an explanation for every current site failure or a complete account of current defaults. Read Brave’s version 1.30 compatibility post for that historical detail.
